Amongst other things American fashion has come to represent a
number of things in the minds of many, Comfort/Casual, Sportswear
& Jeans, Practicality/Utility, Sophisticated-Preppy, Value for
Money, Clean Lines/Ethnically Neutral. Like the American Bar,
American fashion is now a style saught around the world. The
American clothing industry was born in the early 1800s for
menswear. Up until this point, menswear was produced by tailors,
for those whom could afford it, and womenswear was made at home for
by amateur sowers. In the late 19th century, the concentration of
transportation systems, manufacturing facilities, immigrant workers
and skilled tailors in New York allowed for the rapid development
of a concentrated production region. In fact, New York had already
become the capital of ready-to-wear production by 1900, but by
1925, 78% of the fashion produced in Manhattan was in womenswear.
World War 2 went further to isolate the Parisian fashion capital
from the rest of the world, accelerating the idea of American
sportswear and encouraging the isolationist attitude of the
fashionable American woman, who increasingly viewed European
fashion with suspicion rather than envy. By the mid-20th century,
New York had become the fashion focus of the American woman, and
the starkly functional and smart product style would remain the
legacy of US fashion, as it is around the world today. La Cage au

This book discusses the intense practical and theoretical
challenges of forensic science evidence and the pivotal role it
plays in modern criminal proceedings. A global team of prominent
scholars and practitioners explores the contemporary challenges of
forensic science evidence and expert witness testimony from a
variety of theoretical, practical and jurisdictional perspectives.
Both the methodological integrity and the reliability of forensic
science have been questioned in recent official reports and
inquiries. The wide-ranging contributions to this book offer
thorough and far-reaching explorations of the institutional
organisation of forensic science, its epistemological and
methodological foundations, and its procedural regulation,
applications and evaluation in jurisdictions across Europe and
beyond. The development and reform of expert evidence law and
procedural regulation are reconsidered from a range of legal and
scientific perspectives. Brimming with comparative and
interdisciplinary insight, this book also explores the
transnational dimensions of contemporary forensic science,
assessing its value and appropriate uses as expert evidence in
criminal investigations, prosecutions and trials. This contemporary
book will be essential reading for scholars, advanced students,
practitioners and policymakers concerned with the role of forensic
science in the administration of criminal justice. Contributors
include: S. Carr, E. Cunliffe, G. Edmond, S. Farrar, A. Gallop, R.
Graham, L. Heffernan, E.J. Imwinkelried, A. Jackson, A.C.

Criminal proceedings, it is often now said, ought to be conducted
with integrity. But what, exactly, does it mean for criminal
process to have, or to lack, 'integrity'? Is integrity in this
sense merely an aspirational normative ideal, with possibly diffuse
influence on conceptions of professional responsibility? Or is it
also a juridical concept with robust institutional purchase and
enforceable practical consequences in criminal litigation? The 16
new essays contained in this collection, written by prominent legal
scholars and criminologists from Australia, Hong Kong, the UK and
the USA, engage systematically with - and seek to generate further
debate about - the theoretical and practical significance of
'integrity' at all stages of the criminal process. Reflecting the
flexibility and scope of a putative 'integrity principle', the
essays range widely over many of the most hotly contested issues in
contemporary criminal justice theory, policy and practice,
including: the ethics of police investigations, charging practice
and discretionary enforcement; prosecutorial independence, policy
and operational decision-making; plea bargaining; the perils of
witness coaching and accomplice testimony; expert evidence;
doctrines of admissibility and abuse of process; lay participation
in criminal adjudication; the role of remorse in criminal trials;
the ethics of appellate judgment writing; innocence projects; and
state compensation for miscarriages of justice.
Paris at the turn of the 20th century was obsessed with the
interrelations of the arts. It was a time when artists and writers
spoke of poetry as music, sounds as colors, and paintings as
symphonies. The music of Claude Debussy, with its unique textures
and dazzling colors, was the perfect counterpart to the bold new
styles of painting in France. Paul Roberts probes the sources of
Debussy's artistic inspiration, relating the "impressionist" titles
to the artistic and literary ferment of the time. He also draws on
his own performing experience to touch on all the principal
technical problems for a performer of Debussy's piano music. His
many suggestions about interpreting the music will be particularly
valuable to performers as well as listeners.
Before today's teachers are ready to instruct the intellectual
leaders of tomorrow, they must first be trained themselves. Every
teacher experiences an induction process that can make their early
years as an educator nerve-racking. Focusing on this period of time
in a teacher's career can lead to greater teacher retention and
success. Examining the Teacher Induction Process in Contemporary
Education Systems addresses the construct of teacher induction
through theoretical and empirical research. It also provides an
in-depth conceptualization of being a novice teacher through
micro-political realities of teaching in different geographical and
cultural regions. While highlighting topics including adaptation
challenges, mentor-mentee interaction, and teacher retention, this
book is ideally designed for school administrators, early career
teachers, educational researchers, educational professionals, and
academicians seeking current research on early career educator
adaptation and practices.

Innovations in Evidence and Proof brings together fifteen leading
scholars and experienced law teachers based in Australia, Canada,
Northern Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, the USA and England and
Wales to explore and debate the latest developments in Evidence and
Proof scholarship. The essays comprising this volume range
expansively over questions of disciplinary taxonomy, pedagogical
method and computer-assisted learning, doctrinal analysis,
fact-finding, techniques of adjudication, the ethics of
cross-examination, the implications of behavioural science research
for legal procedure, human rights, comparative law and
international criminal trials. Communicating the breadth, dynamism
and intensity of contemporary theoretical innovation in their
diversity of subject-matter and approach, the authors nonetheless
remain united by a common purpose: to indicate how the best
interdisciplinary theorising and research might be integrated
directly into degree-level Evidence teaching. Innovations in
Evidence and Proof is published at an exciting time of theoretical
renewal and increasing empirical sophistication in legal evidence,
proof and procedure scholarship. This groundbreaking collection
will be essential reading for Evidence teachers, and will also
engage the interest and imagination of scholars, researchers and
students investigating issues of evidence and proof in any legal
system, municipal, transnational or global.

This volume brings together 15 articles divided into four
sections on the role of nationalism in transitions to democracy,
the application of theory to country case studies, and the role
played by history and myths in the forging of national identities
and nationalisms. The book develops new theories and frameworks
through engaging with leading scholars of nationalism: Hans Kohn's
propositions are discussed in relation to the applicability of the
term 'civic' (with no ethno-cultural connotations) to liberal
democracies, Rogers Brubaker over the usefulness of dividing
European states into 'civic' and 'nationalizing' states when the
former have historically been 'nationalizers', Will Kymlicka on the
applicability of multiculturalism to post-communist states, and
Paul Robert Magocsi on the lack of data to support claims of
revivals by national minorities in Ukraine. The book also engages
with 'transitology' over the usefulness of comparative studies of
transitions in regions that underwent only political reforms, and
those that had 'quadruple transitions', implying simultaneous
democratic and market reforms, as well as state and nation
building. A comparative study of Serbian and Russian diasporas
focuses on why ethnic Serbs and Russians living outside Serbia and
Russia reacted differently to the disintegration of Yugoslavia and
the USSR. The book dissects the writing of Russian and Soviet
history that continues to utilize imperial frameworks of history,
analyzes the re-writing of Ukrainian history within post-colonial
theories, and discusses the forging of Ukraine's identity within
theories of 'Others' as central to the shaping of identities. The
collection of articles proposes a new framework for the study of
Ukrainian nationalism as a broader research phenomenon by placing
nationalism in Ukraine within a theoretical and comparative
perspective.

The optical studies of fossil organic matter in reflected light
have made great progress in recent decades with the development of
coal petrology, completed around the end of the 1970s by
fluorescence examination. As they are complementary to the studies
in transmitted light (palynology) and organic geochemistry
developed for petroleum exploration purposes, they have become a
much used tool in the recognition of sedimentary thermal
transformations. For more than fifteen years within the
Elf-Aquitaine Group, these studies have been applied in their
various aspects to furnish a better geological understanding of
basins during exploration. They have enabled us to define liquid
and gas hydrocarbon domains which they differentiate and have also
enabled a better characterization of sedimentary environments.
Perhaps the most unexpected result of these studies has been to
reconstruct the thermal history of the basins. Unforeseen but
promising, when deduced from the thermicity of the sedimentary
cover, the crust thermicity forms a determining link-element
between the deep tectonics and the basin formation. Over the last
ten years, the significance of this theme of research has been
reinforced thanks to the impressive development of geodynamic
studies following the general change in ideas brought about by
plate tectonics. The present-day geothermal studies, conducted
simultaneously in the oceanic and continental domains, have
provided it with an argumentation and richer references.
Forensic science evidence and expert witness testimony play an
increasingly prominent role in modern criminal proceedings. Science
produces powerful evidence of criminal offending, but has also
courted controversy and sometimes contributed towards miscarriages
of justice. The twenty-six articles and essays reproduced in this
volume explore the theoretical foundations of modern scientific
proof and critically consider the practical issues to which expert
evidence gives rise in contemporary criminal trials. The essays are
prefaced by a substantial new introduction which provides an
overview and incisive commentary contextualising the key debates.
The volume begins by placing 'forensic science' in
interdisciplinary focus, with contributions from historical,
sociological, Science and Technology Studies (STS), philosophical
and jurisprudential perspectives. This is followed by closer
examination of the role of forensic science and other expert
evidence in criminal proceedings, exposing enduring tensions and
addressing recent controversies in the relationship between science
and criminal law. A third set of contributions considers the
practical challenges of interpreting and communicating forensic
science evidence. This perennial battle continues to be fought at
the intersection between the logic of scientific inference and the
psychology of the fact-finder's 'common sense' reasoning. Finally,
the volume's fourth group of essays evaluates the (limited) success
of existing procedural reforms aimed at improving the reception of
expert testimony in criminal adjudication, and considers future
prospects for institutional renewal - with a keen eye to
comparative law models and experiences, success stories and
cautionary tales.
The fifth volume of Carpatho-Rusyn Studies follows the same
format as previous volumes. It includes nearly 800 entries listing
books, articles in journals, and chapters in books published during
the years 2004 through 2009, and which deal with various aspects of
Carpathian Rus' in Europe and of Carpatho-Rusyns wherever they may
live. Each entry includes full bibliographical data followed by an
extended annotation. Journals that focus on Carpatho-Rusyn studies
each have their own entry and include content analysis in the
annotation. The material listed covers a wide variety of subject
areas in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts, among the
most important of which -- in terms of number of entries -- are:
history, language, religious studies, literature, ethnography and
folklore, the nationality (identity) question, Carpatho-Rusyn
diasporas, historiography and scholarship, education, and book
publishing and the press. The volume begins with a survey of the
highlights of Carpatho-Rusyn scholarship during the five-year
period, 2004-2009. Appended are several charts with publication
data. The volume concludes with an extensive index of authors,
editors, compilers, placenames, and persons who are the subject of
studies.
