Beginning in the 18th century, a turning point in labour history as
work encountered an industrialising modernity, this book explores
how different forms of work have been valued up to the present day.
Focusing on the cultural, intellectual, social and political
implications of wages, the chapters in this collection historicise
the labour market, conceiving it as complex system of social
relations which evolve through time and differ according to space.
They show how the level of wages and other forms of remuneration
reflect not only marginal productivity and scarcity but also the
nature of work relations and wider political, social and economic
circumstances. With examples ranging across several centuries and
different parts of the globe, it shows how wages are influenced by
the specific organization and processes of work, conflict and
power, social status and hierarchies between workers, custom and
identity, family structure and professional ethics, ideology,
politics and policy. Combining quantitative and qualitative
approaches The Value of Work since the 18th Century also addresses
two interlinked questions; how did theoretical interpretations and
techniques of wage measurement emerge and evolve, and to what
extent does this matter in understanding the social and political
history of work?
Driven by the increasing importance of discussions around 'impact'
and its meaning and implications for history, The Impact of
History? brings together established and new voices to raise
relevant questions, issues and controversies for debate. The
chapters are articulated around the themes of public history, the
politics of history, the role of history in the shaping of learning
and the situation of history in the changing world of education.
While this subject is driven differently by the research bodies and
councils of different countries, similar debates about the value
and place of the academy in society are taking place in the UK, the
USA and Europe as well as in other parts of the world. Chapters
cover diverse areas of history from this perspective including:
public history national histories new technologies and the natural
sciences campaigning histories the impact agenda. This collection
is a political and intellectual intervention at a time when
scholars and readers of history are being asked to explain why
history matters and it seeks to intervene in the debates on
'impact', on education and on the role of the past in the shaping
of our future. Bringing together leading authors from a wide range
of fields, The Impact of History? is an accessible and engaging yet
polemical and thought-provoking overview of the role of history in
contemporary society.

This Festschrift volume is published in honor of Ferran Hurtado on
the occasion of his 60th birthday; it contains extended versions of
selected communications presented at the XIV Spanish Meeting on
Computational Geometry, held at the University of Alcala, Spain, in
June 2011. Ferran Hurtado has played a central role in the Spanish
community of Computational Geometry since its very beginning, and
the quantity and quality of the international participants in the
conference is an indisputable proof of his relevance in the
international level. The 26 revised full papers were carefully
reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers present
original research in computational geometry, in its broadest sense.
Topics included are discrete and combinatorial geometry, linear
programming applied to geometric problems, geometric algorithms and
data structures, theoretical foundations of computational geometry,
questions of interest in the implementation of geometric
algorithms, and applications of computational geometry.

This new edited collection brings together historians and social
scientists to engage with the global history of Universal Basic
Income (UBI) and offer historically-rich perspectives on
contemporary debates about the future of work. In particular, the
book goes beyond a genealogy of a seemingly utopian idea to explore
how the meaning and reception of basic income proposals has changed
over time. The study of UBI provides a prism through which we can
understand how different intellectual traditions, political agents,
and policy problems have opened up space for new thinking about
work and welfare at critical moments. Contributions range broadly
across time and space, from Milton Friedman and the debate over
guaranteed income in the post-war United States to the emergence of
the European basic income movement in the 1980s and the politics of
cash transfers in contemporary South Africa. Taken together, these
chapters address comparative questions: why do proposals for a
guaranteed minimum income emerge at some times and recede into the
background in others? What kinds of problems is basic income
designed to solve, and how have policy proposals been shaped by
changing attitudes to gender roles and the boundaries of social
citizenship? What role have transnational networks played in
carrying UBI proposals between the global north and the global
south, and how does the politics of basic income vary between these
contexts? In short, the book builds on a growing body of
scholarship on UBI and lays the groundwork for a much richer
understanding of the history of this radical proposal. Chapter 3 is
