Over the past two thousand years London has developed from a small town, fitting snugly within its walls, into one of the world's largest and most dynamic cities. This beautifully illustrated book charts that growth and the city's transformation through hundreds of maps culled from the collection of the British Library's Map Library. These visual records range from sweeping images of the entire city to nuanced studies of its elements and neighborhoods. Including official documents, individual endeavors, hand-drawn renditions, and technologically advanced replicas, these maps represent a variety of perspectives. Utilitarian maps show the city as it is and serve to elucidate its inner workings, while carefully wrought plans show the city as it was envisioned--whether those plans were executed or not. The maps and panoramas collected here are more than topographical records. They all convey unique insight into the concerns, assumptions, ambitions, and prejudices of Londoners at the time the maps were created. In addition to offering readers a tour of London past and present, this book reveals the inside story of the creation, growth, and change of one of the world's greatest cities.

Sievers' Law and the History of Semivowel Syllabicity in Indo-European and Ancient Greek (Hardcover): Peter Barber Sievers' Law and the History of Semivowel Syllabicity in Indo-European and Ancient Greek (Hardcover)

This book investigates how semivowels were realized in Indo-European and in early Greek. More specifically, it examines the extent to which Indo-European *i and *y were independent phonemes, in what respects their alternation was predictable, and how this situation changed as Indo-European developed into Greek. The comprehensive and chronologically sensitive nature of this study, together with its careful assessment of what is inherited and what is innovative, enables substantive conclusions to be drawn regarding the behaviour of semivowels at various stages in the history of Greek and in Indo-European itself.

A published edition of the lecture delivered by Peter Barber on the occasion of being awarded the Soane Medal in November 2022. As one of Britain's most acclaimed architects and founder of Peter Barber Architects, Peter's practice focuses on social housing and urban planning. He has been widely celebrated for his inventive approach to design, delivering innovative housing which is both high-quality and affordable. Barber has also developed a number of speculative projects which respond to issues including the housing crisis, the climate emergency, and the revitalisation of de-industrialised areas. In recent years Peter and his firm have received several awards, including a lifetime achievement award from the Architects' Journal and IBA Neave Brown Award for Housing 2021. He was awarded an OBE for services to architecture last year and elected as a Royal Academician in January. Alongside his practice, Peter lectures on architecture at the University of Westminster and was recently invited by the government to lead a discussion on "Designing for Better Public Spaces" with a team of top built environment professionals. The Soane Medal was established by Sir John Soane's Museum in 2017 and continues the mission of the Museum's founder, the celebrated Regency architect Sir John Soane, to encourage a better understanding of the central importance of architecture in culture and society. The Medal recognises architects, educators and critics who have made a major contribution to their field through practice, history or theory.
