Cause and Chance - Causation in an Indeterministic World (Paperback): Phil Dowe, Paul Noordhof Cause and Chance - Causation in an Indeterministic World (Paperback)
Phil Dowe, Paul Noordhof; Introduction by "The Editors"
R1,685 Discovery Miles 16 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Philosophers have long been fascinated by the connection between cause and effect: are 'causes' things we can experience, or are they concepts provided by our minds? The study of causation goes back to Aristotle, but resurged with David Hume and Immanuel Kant, and is now one of the most important topics in metaphysics. Most of the recent work done in this area has attempted to place causation in a deterministic, scientific, worldview. But what about the unpredictable and chancey world we actually live in: can one theory of causation cover all instances of cause and effect? Cause and Chance: Causation in an Indeterministic World is a collection of specially written papers by world-class metaphysicians. Its focus is the problem facing the 'reductionist' approach to causation: the attempt to cover all types of causation, deterministic and indeterministic, with one basic theory. Contributors: Stephen Barker, Helen Beebee, Phil Dowe, Dorothy Edgington, Doug Ehring, Chris Hitchcock, Igal Kwart, Paul Noordhof, Murali Ramachandran and Michael Tooley.

Reality and Rationality (Hardcover): Wesley C. Salmon Reality and Rationality (Hardcover)
Wesley C. Salmon; Edited by Merrilee H. Salmon, Phil Dowe
R3,646 Discovery Miles 36 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume of articles (most published, some new) is a follow-up to the late Wesley C. Salmon's widely read collection Causality And Explanation (OUP 1998). It contains both published and unpublished articles, and focuses on two related areas of inquiry: First, is science a rational enterprise? Secondly, does science yield objective information about our world, even the aspects that we cannot observe directly? Salmon's own take is that objective knowledge of the world is possible, and his work in these articles centers around proving that this can be so. Salmon's influential standing in the field ensures that this volume will be of interest to both undergraduates and professional philosophers, primarily in the philosophy of science.

Physical Causation (Hardcover): Phil Dowe Physical Causation (Hardcover)
Phil Dowe
R2,685 Discovery Miles 26 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Physical Causation discusses in a systematic way an original, positive account of causation: the conserved quantities account of causal processes that Phil Dowe has been developing over the past ten years. Dowe offers a clear and original account of causation based firmly in contemporary science. This is an important, original book that will be widely discussed among philosophers and students working in contemporary metaphysics and philosophy of science, and also scientists with an interest in foundational issues.

Physical Causation (Paperback): Phil Dowe Physical Causation (Paperback)
Phil Dowe
R1,349 Discovery Miles 13 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, published in 2000, is a clear account of causation based firmly in contemporary science. Dowe discusses in a systematic way, a positive account of causation: the conserved quantities account of causal processes which he has been developing over the last ten years. The book describes causal processes and interactions in terms of conserved quantities: a causal process is the worldline of an object which possesses a conserved quantity, and a causal interaction involves the exchange of conserved quantities. Further, things that are properly called cause and effect are appropriately connected by a set of causal processes and interactions. The distinction between cause and effect is explained in terms of a version of the fork theory: the direction of a certain kind of ordered pattern of events in the world. This particular version has the virtue that it allows for the possibility of backwards causation, and therefore time travel.

Galileo, Darwin, and Hawking - The Interplay of Science, Reason, and Religion (Paperback): Phil Dowe Galileo, Darwin, and Hawking - The Interplay of Science, Reason, and Religion (Paperback)
Phil Dowe
R618 R558 Discovery Miles 5 580 Save R60 (10%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The history of the interaction between science and religion is fraught with tension, although, as philosopher Phil Dowe demonstrates, many thoughtful and religious people have also found harmony between these two crucial fields. This fascinating book insightfully surveys the relationship of science, reason, and religion, giving special attention to the most contentious topics -- cosmology, evolution, and miracles.

Providing a superb introduction to the philosophy of science, Dowebs "Galileo, Darwin, and Hawking" contends that there are four basic ways to relate science and religion. Two of them, "naturalism" and "religious science," present these endeavors as antagonistic. By contrast, an "independence" view understands them as wholly unrelated. Finally, an "interaction" account sees religion and science as complementary -- perhaps even dependent on one another. Dowe finds this last perspective the most historically and philosophically compelling. He argues his case by exploring the history of science, highlighting the life and work of three scientific giants: Galileo Galilei, Charles Darwin, and Stephen Hawking.
