From Praha to Prague - Czechs in an Oklahoma Farm Town (Paperback): Philip D. Smith From Praha to Prague - Czechs in an Oklahoma Farm Town (Paperback)
Philip D. Smith
R750 Discovery Miles 7 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Around the turn of the twentieth century, thousands of Czechs left their homelands in Bohemia and Moravia and came to the United States. While many settled in major American cities, others headed to rural areas out west where they could claim their own land for farming. In From Praha to Prague, Philip D. Smith examines how the Czechs who founded and settled in Prague, Oklahoma, embraced the economic and cultural activities of their American hometown while maintaining their ethnic identity. According to Smith, the Czechs of Prague began as a clannish group of farmers who participated in the 1891 land run and settled in east-central Oklahoma. After the town's incorporation in 1902, settlers from other ethnic backgrounds swiftly joined the fledgling community, and soon the original Czech immigrants found themselves in the minority. By 1930, the Prague Czechs had reached a unique cultural, social, and economic duality in their community. They strove to become reliable, patriotic citizens of their adopted country - joining churches, playing sports, and supporting the Allied effort in World War II - but they also maintained their identity as Czechs through local traditions such as participating in the Bohemian Hall society, burying their dead in the town's Czech National Cemetery, and holding the annual Kolache Festival, a lively celebration that still draws visitors from around the world. As a result, Smith notes, succeeding generations of Prague Czechs have proudly considered themselves Czech Americans: firmly assimilated to mainstream American culture but holding to an equally strong sense of belonging to a singular ethnic group. As he analyzes the Czech experience in farm-town Oklahoma, Smith explores several intriguing questions: Was it easier or more difficult for Czechs living in a rural town to sustain their ethnic identity and culture than for Czechs living in large urban areas such as Chicago? How did the tactics used by Prague Czechs to preserve their group identity differ from those used in rural areas where immigrant populations were the majority? In addressing these and other questions, From Praha to Prague reveals the unique path that Prague Czechs took toward Americanization.

Description: What is faith? In what ways might faith be a virtue, a component of a life well lived? How might faith be corrupted and become a vice? In Why Faith Is a Virtue, Philip D. Smith builds on the work of Alasdair MacIntyre and Robert Adams to argue that faith contributes to human excellence. To make the argument, Smith sorts through conflicting possible "faiths" and shows how some of them are not virtues at all. Nevertheless, he argues that faith, properly understood, contributes to crucial human practices: scientific research, social reform, and parenting. He explains how and why faith is a virtue.

Suggested Tartans for Scottish, Scotch-Irish, Irish, and North American Surnames with Lists of Clan, Family, and District Tartans. Expa (Paperback, 9th Expanded ed.)

R892 Discovery Miles 8 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This ninth edition of Tartan For Me presents the latest in a series of tools for the person seeking or giving information on the selection of a tartan appropriate to a given surname. The lists of clan, family and district tartans are as current as can be. The master "Tartan-Name" list has been revised and expanded by adding thousands of Scottish, Cornish, Welsh, Manx, Irish and non-Celtic surnames. Tartan is a living textile art form with a tradition that began in the Highlands of Scotland about the same time that Europeans discovered both their own minority cultures and the New World. Over the centuries the "Pride o' Tartan" has grown while the exodus of Scots and Ulster Scots to new homes continues even today. Millions throughout the world look to Scotland, Ireland or other Celtic areas as their point of cultural heritage. Tartan is the living, visible symbol of this identification. Every Scot is "color coded." Recently, tartan has become a more universal symbol than purely Scottish. It has become synonymous with "identification" throughout the world. Tartan is used as corporate logos, by schools and universities, as well as football teams. Personal family tartans abound from Canada to Japan. Although not long associated with the tradition, tartans are now being designed for Irish, Cornish, Manx, Welsh and a variety of non-Celtic surnames and regions. English counties and other Celtic and non-Celtic areas of Europe, America and even China, Russia, and Japan now have "national" or "regional" tartans. Four maps supplement the text: a map of district tartan areas, a map of Irish districts, a map of Irish counties, and a map showing the approximate locations of major clans. Information is included on how to locate uncommon tartans, the meaning of color, the recording of tartans, and when to wear a tartan. Surnames are arranged alphabetically, providing quick reference to the right tartan for you.

Understanding Criminal Justice - Sociological Perspectives (Paperback, New): Philip D. Smith, Kristin Natalier Understanding Criminal Justice - Sociological Perspectives (Paperback, New)
Philip D. Smith, Kristin Natalier
R1,386 Discovery Miles 13 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'This book traverses an impressive array of topics and problems central to law and criminal justice. Its accessibility, contemporary themes and sensitivity to issues of inequality make it a perfect text for students and teachers of sociology, law, criminology, legal studies and other related areas. It is rare to find a book that takes the sociological imagination so successfully into fields that are often viewed as the domain for legal professionals only. The well-chosen examples also make it a valuable resource for scholars with experiences of different justice systems' -" Sharyn L Roach Anleu, Flinders University

"

Smith and Natalier have produced an accessible, wide-ranging and lucid text which sets the major questions of criminal justice within the broad framework of classical and contemporary sociological theory. It represents a significant step forward among teaching texts in the field, synthesising some difficult material without over-simplifying it, and providing a broad-overview without losing sight of the texture of discreet issues' "- Professor Nicola Lacey, London School of Economics

"

Is there really an intrinsic link between the law and our criminal justice system? What exactly is it and can an understanding of wider sociological issues tell us anything about this relationship?

Understanding Criminal Justice addresses the fundamental relationship between law and the criminal justice system, and the ways in which both are intimately connected with wider social forces.

The book provides an essential introduction coverering classic themes, debates and literatures to ground the student before moving on to contemporary themes such as globalisation, internet regulation and the media. The subject matter is contextualised within the wider social framework by calling into play the historical, political, community and cultural inputs that impact upon concrete policies and practice. The authors integrate theory with data and examples from the UK, USA and Australia.

Through the inclusion of the following pedagogical devices, the student is encouraged to more fully and independently develop their understanding of key questions and issues:

" review questions and exercises

" further reading lists

" suggested internet sites

" highlighted key terms

" bullets to summarise key points

" boxed sections on themes, definitions and case studies

This comprehensive overview is ideal for 1st and 2nd year undergraduates in Criminology, Criminal Justice Studies, Law, Legal Studies, Sociology, Social Work and Policing. Having used this text the reader will come to appreciate the myriad paths through which law and the criminal justice system play a vital, if contested, role in our society.
