Virtual English as a Lingua Franca (Hardcover): Inmaculada Pineda, Rino Bosso Virtual English as a Lingua Franca (Hardcover)
Inmaculada Pineda, Rino Bosso
R4,130 Discovery Miles 41 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection offers a comprehensive account of the development of intercultural communication strategies through Virtual English as a Lingua Franca, reflecting on the ways in which we make pragmatic meaning in today’s technology-informed globalized world. The volume places an emphasis on analyzing transmodal, transsemiotic, and transcultural discourse practices in online spaces, providing a counterpoint to existing ELF research which has leaned toward unpacking formal features of ELF communication in face-to-face interactions. Chapters explore how these practices are characterized and then further sustained via non-verbal semiotic resources, drawing on data from a global range of empirical studies. The book prompts further reflection on readers’ own experiences in online settings and the challenges of VELF while also supplying educators in these contexts with the analytical resources to better bridge the gap between formal and informal learning. Highlighting the dynamic complexity of online intercultural communication in the 21st century, this book is a valuable resource for students and scholars in applied linguistics, language education, digital communication, and intercultural communication.

R492 R407 Discovery Miles 4 070 Save R85 (17%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A story of separation and displacement in two fictionalized voices: a person who has migrated, without papers, to the United States for work, and their partner who waits at home. Nostalgia Doesn’t Flow Away Like Riverwater / Xilase qui riĂ© di’ sicasi riĂ© nisa guiigu’ / La Nostalgia no se marcha como el agua de los rĂos is a trilingual collection by one of the most prominent Indigenous poets in Latin America: Irma Pineda. The book consists of 36 persona poems that tell a story of separation and displacement in two fictionalized voices: a person who has migrated, without papers, to the United States for work, and that person’s partner who waits at home, in the poet’s hometown of JuchitĂĄn, Oaxaca. According to PeriĂłdico de PoesĂa, a journal based at UNAM (Mexico’s national university), when it was published in 2007, this book established Pineda “one of the strongest poets working in Zapotec, the [Mexican] Native language with the largest literary production.”

Inclusion and Belonging in Cities of Tomorrow - Governance and Access by Design (1st ed. 2024): Victor Santiago Pineda Inclusion and Belonging in Cities of Tomorrow - Governance and Access by Design (1st ed. 2024)
Victor Santiago Pineda
R754 Discovery Miles 7 540 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book illuminates the pressing need for cities to adapt to changing demographics, particularly the growing population of older persons and individuals with disabilities. The lens of the Capability Model is used to highlight that disability is not inherent to the individual but is instead created by social barriers that can be eliminated through radical inclusion. Uncover the historical context and entrenched beliefs that have perpetuated exclusionary urban landscapes and disadvantage for marginalized groups. Deep-dive into the intricate interplay of geographical space, recognizing its pivotal role in shaping our cities and exacerbating spatial injustice. The construction industry, a vital agent in forging accessible environments, often falls short in accommodating persons with disabilities and older individuals. This pivotal work underscores the urgent need for integrated approaches woven into the fabric of cities, companies, and the construction industry itself, to ensure universal accessibility. Drawing upon practical strategies and compelling case studies, the book presents actionable frameworks such as the DisCo Policy Framework and the Iceberg of Inequality Model, facilitating the assessment of progress towards achieving radical inclusion. The book concludes with a simple premise; the future is accessible. Embark on a journey into the cities of tomorrow, where inclusion and belonging are the norm.

Sustainability Standards and Global Governance - Experiences of Emerging Economies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Archna Negi,... Sustainability Standards and Global Governance - Experiences of Emerging Economies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Archna Negi, Jorge Antonio Perez Pineda, Johannes Blankenbach
R1,543 Discovery Miles 15 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access book focuses on the issue of sustainability standards from the perspective of both global governance frameworks and emerging economies. It stems from the recognition that the accelerated pace of economic globalization has generated production and consumption patterns that are generating sustainability concerns. Sustainability standards (and regulations) are increasingly being used in a bid to make global consumption and production more sustainable. Given the dense inter-connectedness of economic affairs globally, the use of sustainability standards has become a concern of global governance, who face the challenge of achieving a balance between the use of standards for genuine sustainability objectives, and not allowing them to turn into instruments of protectionism or coercion. The emerging economies, given their increasing engagement with the global economy, are most impacted by the use of sustainability standards. The emphasis of 'emerging economies' in this book is retained both by using case studies from these economies and by collating perceptions and assessments of those located in these economies. The case studies included span sectors such as palm oil, forestry, food quality, vehicular emissions and water standards, and address the problems unique to the emerging economies, including capacity building for compliance with standards, adapting international standards in domestic contexts and addressing the exclusion of small and medium enterprises etc. Complex interfaces and dynamics of a global nature are not limited to the thematic of this book but also extend to the process through which it was written. This book brings together insights from developed as well as emerging economies (Germany, India, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Pakistan, Mexico and China). It also brings together scholars and practitioners to jointly ponder upon the conceptual aspects of the global frameworks for sustainability standards. This book is a very useful resource for researchers and practitioners alike, and provides valuable insights for policy makers as well.

Victor Santiago Pineda
R1,685 Discovery Miles 16 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This Open Access book is an anthropological urban study of the Emirate of Dubai, its institutions, and their evolution. It provides a contemporary history of disability in city planning from a non-Western perspective and explores the cultural context for its positioning. Three insights inform the author's approach. First, disability research, much like other urban or social issues, must be situated in a particular place. Second, access and inclusion forms a key part of both local and global planning issues. Third, a 21st century planning education should take access and inclusion into consideration by applying a disability lens to the empirical, methodological, and theoretical advances of the field. By bridging theory and practice, this book provides new insights on inclusive city planning and comparative urban theory. This book should be read as part of a larger struggle to define and assert access; it's a story of how equity and justice are central themes in building the cities of the future and of today.

Low-Power High-Resolution Analog to Digital Converters - Design, Test and Calibration (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the... Low-Power High-Resolution Analog to Digital Converters - Design, Test and Calibration (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2011)
Amir Zjajo, Jose Pineda De Gyvez
R1,564 Discovery Miles 15 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the fast advancement of CMOS fabrication technology, more and more signal-processing functions are implemented in the digital domain for a lower cost, lower power consumption, higher yield, and higher re-configurability. This has recently generated a great demand for low-power, low-voltage A/D converters that can be realized in a mainstream deep-submicron CMOS technology. However, the discrepancies between lithography wavelengths and circuit feature sizes are increasing. Lower power supply voltages significantly reduce noise margins and increase variations in process, device and design parameters. Consequently, it is steadily more difficult to control the fabrication process precisely enough to maintain uniformity. The inherent randomness of materials used in fabrication at nanoscopic scales means that performance will be increasingly variable, not only from die-to-die but also within each individual die. Parametric variability will be compounded by degradation in nanoscale integrated circuits resulting in instability of parameters over time, eventually leading to the development of faults. Process variation cannot be solved by improving manufacturing tolerances; variability must be reduced by new device technology or managed by design in order for scaling to continue. Similarly, within-die performance variation also imposes new challenges for test methods. In an attempt to address these issues, Low-Power High-Resolution Analog-to-Digital Converters specifically focus on: i) improving the power efficiency for the high-speed, and low spurious spectral A/D conversion performance by exploring the potential of low-voltage analog design and calibration techniques, respectively, and ii) development of circuit techniques and algorithms to enhance testing and debugging potential to detect errors dynamically, to isolate and confine faults, and to recover errors continuously. The feasibility of the described methods has been verified by measurements from the silicon prototypes fabricated in standard 180nm, 90nm and 65nm CMOS technology.

Integrated Circuit Defect-Sensitivity: Theory and Computational Models (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Integrated Circuit Defect-Sensitivity: Theory and Computational Models (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993)
Jose Pineda De Gyvez
R2,926 Discovery Miles 29 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The history of this book begins way back in 1982. At that time a research proposal was filed with the Dutch Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter concerning research to model defects in the layer structure of integrated circuits. It was projected that the results may be useful for yield estimates, fault statistics and for the design of fault tolerant structures. The reviewers were not in favor of this proposal and it disappeared in the drawers. Shortly afterwards some microelectronics industries realized that their survival may depend on a better integration between technology-and design-laboratories. For years the "silicon foundry" concept had suggested a fairly rigorous separation between the two areas. The expectation was that many small design companies would share the investment into the extremely costful Silicon fabrication plants while designing large lots of application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC's). Those fabrication plants would be concentrated with only a few market leaders.

Jaime A. Pineda
R4,516 Discovery Miles 45 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of this book is to bring together social scientists, cognitive scientists, psychologists, neuroscientists, neuropsychologists and others to promote a dialogue about the variety of processes involved in social cognition, as well as the relevance of mirroring neural systems to those processes. Social cognition is a broad discipline that encompasses many issues not yet adequately addressed by neurobiologists. Yet, it is a strong belief that framing these issues in terms of the neural basis of social cognition, especially within an evolutionary perspective, can be a very fruitful strategy. This book includes some of the leading thinkers in the nascent field of mirroring processes and reflects the authors' attempts to till common ground from a variety of perspectives. The book raises contrary views and addresses some of the most vexing yet core questions in the field - providing the basis for extended discussion among interested readers and laying down guidelines for future research. It has been argued that interaction with members of one's own social group enhances cognitive development in primates and especially humans (Barrett & Henzi, 2005). Byrne and Whiten (1988), Donald (1991), and others have speculated that abilities such as cooperation, deception, and imitation led to increasingly complex social interactions among primates resulting in a tremendous expansion of the cerebral cortex. The evolutionary significance of an imitation capability in primates is matched by its ontological consequences.

R5,776 Discovery Miles 57 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 2nd edition of defect oriented testing has been extensively updated. New chapters on Functional, Parametric Defect Models and Inductive fault Analysis and Yield Engineering have been added to provide a link between defect sources and yield. The chapter on RAM testing has been updated with focus on parametric and SRAM stability testing. Similarly, newer material has been incorporated in digital fault modeling and analog testing chapters. The strength of Defect Oriented Testing for nano-Metric CMOS VLSIs lies in its industrial relevance.

The progression developed in this book is essential to understand new test methodologies, algorithms and industrial practices. Without the insight into the physics of nano-metric technologies, it would be hard to develop system-level test strategies that yield a high IC fault coverage. Obviously, the work on defect-oriented testing presented in the book is not final, and it is an evolving field with interesting challenges imposed by the ever-changing nature of nano-metric technologies. Test and design practitioners from academia and industry will find that Defect-Oriented Testing for Nano-Metric CMOS VLSI Circuits lays the foundations for further pioneering work.

R3,987 Discovery Miles 39 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is an exploration of the integration-differentiation dynamics that result in a drive, or impulse, toward human sociality, arguing that our need to connect with other people is as fundamental as our need for food and shelter. In The Social Impulse: The Evolution and Neuroscience of What Brings Us Together, Jaime Pineda presents the evidence that social cohesion is a complementary force to natural selection, the Darwinian drive for differentiation and diversity. The book addresses the distinctive aspects of social behavior that arise from integration principles and seeks to answer the following questions: (1) Why does social cohesion arise? (2) What is the history of social dynamics? (3) How does social cohesion work? (4) When do the developmental aspects of social dynamics arise? A final section of the book addresses the value of sociality and social cohesion. By exploring the differences, similarities, and, most important, the interactivity between natural selection and social cohesion, this unique book provides a wealth of interesting, challenging, and unexpected insights.

Seeing Like an Activist - Civil Disobedience and the Civil Rights Movement (Paperback): Erin R. Pineda Seeing Like an Activist - Civil Disobedience and the Civil Rights Movement (Paperback)
Erin R. Pineda
R767 Discovery Miles 7 670 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

There are few movements more firmly associated with civil disobedience than the Civil Rights Movement. In the mainstream imagination, civil rights activists eschewed coercion, appealed to the majority's principles, and submitted willingly to legal punishment in order to demand necessary legislative reforms and facilitate the realization of core constitutional and democratic principles. Their fidelity to the spirit of the law, commitment to civility, and allegiance to American democracy set the normative standard for liberal philosophies of civil disobedience. This narrative offers the civil disobedience of the Civil Rights Movement as a moral exemplar: a blueprint for activists who seek transformative change and racial justice within the bounds of democracy. Yet in this book, Erin R. Pineda shows how it more often functions as a disciplining example-a means of scolding activists and quieting dissent. As Pineda argues, the familiar account of Civil Rights disobedience not only misremembers history; it also distorts our political judgments about how civil disobedience might fit into democratic politics. Seeing Like an Activist charts the emergence of this influential account of civil disobedience in the Civil Rights Movement, and demonstrates its reliance on a narrative about black protest that is itself entangled with white supremacy. Liberal political theorists whose work informed decades of scholarship saw civil disobedience "like a white state": taking for granted the legitimacy of the constitutional order, assuming as primary the ends of constitutional integrity and stability, centering the white citizen as the normative ideal, and figuring the problem of racial injustice as limited, exceptional, and all-but-already solved. Instead, this book "sees" civil disobedience from the perspective of an activist, showing the consequences for ideas about how civil disobedience ought to unfold in the present. Building on historical and archival evidence, Pineda shows how civil rights activists, in concert with anticolonial movements across the globe, turned to civil disobedience as a practice of decolonization in order to emancipate themselves and others, and in the process transform the racial order. Pineda recovers this powerful alternative account by adopting a different theoretical approach-one which sees activists as themselves engaged in the creative work of political theorizing.
