Heat Shock Proteins in the Immune System (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Robert J. Binder, Pramod K. Srivastava Heat Shock Proteins in the Immune System (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Robert J. Binder, Pramod K. Srivastava
R4,881 Discovery Miles 48 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Experts from around the world review the current field of the immunobiology of heat shock proteins, and provide a comprehensive account of how these molecules are spearheading efforts in the understanding of various pathways of the immune system. This one-stop resource contains numerous images to both help illustrate the research on heat shock proteins, and better clarify the field for the non-expert. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) were discovered in 1962 and were quickly recognized for their role in protecting cells from stress. Twenty years later, the immunogenicity of a select few HSPs was described, and for the past 30 years, these findings have been applied to numerous branches of immunology, including tumor immunology and immunosurveillance, immunotherapy, etiology of autoimmunity, immunotherapy of infectious diseases, and expression of innate receptors. While HSPs can be used to manipulate immune responses by exogenous administration, they appear to be involved in initiation of de novo immune responses to cancer and likely in the maintenance of immune homeostasis.

R4,555 Discovery Miles 45 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Monitoring of public and private sites is increasingly becoming a very important and critical issue, especially after the recent flurry of terrorist attacks including the one on the Word Trade Center in September 2001. It is, therefore, imperative that effective multisensor surveillance systems be developed to protect the society from similar attacks in the future. The new generation of surveillance systems to be developed have a specific requirement: they must be able to automatically identify criminal and terrorist activity without sacrificing individual privacy to the extent possible. Privacy laws concerning monitoring and surveillance systems vary from country to country but, in general, they try to protect the privacy of their citizens. Monitoring and visual surveillance has numerous other applications. It can be employed to help invalids or handicapped and to monitor the activities of elderly people. It can be used to monitor large events such as sporting events, as well. Nowadays, monitoring is employ d in several different contexts including transport applications, such as monitoring of railway stations and airports, dangerous environments like nuclear facilities or traffic flows on roads and bridges. The latest generation of surveillance systems mainly rely on hybrid analog-digital, or completely digital video communications and processing methods and take advantage of the greater of flexibility offered by video processing algorithms that are capable focusing a human operator's attention on a set of interesting situations.

Multi-photon Quantum Secure Communication (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Pramode K. Verma, Mayssaa El Rifai, Kam Wai Clifford Chan Multi-photon Quantum Secure Communication (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Pramode K. Verma, Mayssaa El Rifai, Kam Wai Clifford Chan
R4,203 Discovery Miles 42 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores alternative ways of accomplishing secure information transfer with incoherent multi-photon pulses in contrast to conventional Quantum Key Distribution techniques. Most of the techniques presented in this book do not need conventional encryption. Furthermore, the book presents a technique whereby any symmetric key can be securely transferred using the polarization channel of an optical fiber for conventional data encryption. The work presented in this book has largely been practically realized, albeit in a laboratory environment, to offer proof of concept rather than building a rugged instrument that can withstand the rigors of a commercial environment.

Voice over IP Networks - Quality of Service, Pricing and Security (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): Pramode K. Verma, Ling Wang Voice over IP Networks - Quality of Service, Pricing and Security (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Pramode K. Verma, Ling Wang
R3,879 R3,203 Discovery Miles 32 030 Save R676 (17%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book addresses three important issues in VoIP networks: Quality of Service, pricing and security.

In addressing Quality of Service (QoS), it introduces the notion of delay not exceeding an upper limit, termed the bounded delay, to measure the Quality of Service in VoIP networks. Queuing models are introduced to measure performance in terms of bounded delays. Closed form solutions relating the impact of bounding delays on throughput of VoIP traffic are provided. Traffic that exceeds the delay threshold is treated as lost throughput. The results addressed can be used in scaling resources in a VoIP network for different thresholds of acceptable delays. Both single and multiple switching points are addressed. The same notion and analysis are also applied on jitter, another important indicator of the VoIP QoS

This book also develops a pricing model based on the Quality of Service provided in VoIP networks. It presents the impact of quality of VoIP service demanded by the customer on the transmission resources required by the network using an analytical approach. In addition, it extends and applies the delay throughput analysis developed for VoIP networks in assessing the impact of risks constituted by a number of transportation channels, where the risk associated with each channel can be quantified by a known distribution. Finally, the book explores areas for future research that can be built on the foundation of research presented.

Secure Networked Inference with Unreliable Data Sources (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Aditya Vempaty, Bhavya Kailkhura, Pramod K.... Secure Networked Inference with Unreliable Data Sources (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Aditya Vempaty, Bhavya Kailkhura, Pramod K. Varshney
R3,176 Discovery Miles 31 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book presents theory and algorithms for secure networked inference in the presence of Byzantines. It derives fundamental limits of networked inference in the presence of Byzantine data and designs robust strategies to ensure reliable performance for several practical network architectures. In particular, it addresses inference (or learning) processes such as detection, estimation or classification, and parallel, hierarchical, and fully decentralized (peer-to-peer) system architectures. Furthermore, it discusses a number of new directions and heuristics to tackle the problem of design complexity in these practical network architectures for inference.

Distributed Detection and Data Fusion (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Pramod K. Varshney Distributed Detection and Data Fusion (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Pramod K. Varshney
R4,606 Discovery Miles 46 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides an introduction to decision making in a distributed computational framework. Classical detection theory assumes a centralized configuration. All observations are processed by a central processor to produce the decision. In the decentralized detection system, distributed detectors generate decisions based on locally available observations; these decisions are then conveyed to the fusion center that makes the global decision. Using numerous examples throughout the book, the author discusses such distributed detection processes under several different formulations and in a wide variety of network topologies.

Topics covered include: elements of detection theory; distributed Bayesian detection in parallel fusion networks and in other network topologies; distributed detection with false-alarm rate constraints; distributed sequential detection; and information theory and distributed hypotheses testing.

By providing a unified treatment of the recent advances, this book should prove valuable not only to researchers active in the field, but also to graduate students and others embarking on research in detection, signal processing, and statistical decision theory.

Transforming Agriculture in South Asia - The Role of Value Chains and Contract Farming (Paperback): Ashok K. Mishra, Anjani... Transforming Agriculture in South Asia - The Role of Value Chains and Contract Farming (Paperback)
Ashok K. Mishra, Anjani Kumar, Pramod K. Joshi
R1,327 Discovery Miles 13 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Debates about public expenditure in the agricultural sector have reopened in many developing and emerging economies because of high budget deficits and changes in public opinion. As a result, agricultural policy in many of these countries is beginning to take a more market-oriented approach to agrarian problems, most notably through the introduction of contract farming. This book explores the policy issues around contract farming and its transformative potential and addresses the lack of empirical research on this topic by focusing on South Asia: principally India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The book first addresses the effects of contract farming (vertical coordination) on productivity, food security indicators (yield, consumption expenditures, prices), employment and input usage. Then it draws lessons from the South Asian case studies on the impact of institutional changes, like contract farming, on income and food security of smallholder households. The core of the book includes case study chapters on several commodities that are produced under contract farming, including vegetables and fisheries in Bangladesh, low-value crops in Nepal and coffee in India. Other chapters also explore contracts, storage, input usage and technical efficiency in these cases. This book serves as an essential guide to academics, researchers, students, legislative liaisons and think tank groups interested in agrarian issues, agricultural economics and agricultural policy in emerging economies and particularly in South Asia.

R1,285 Discovery Miles 12 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ecoprecarity: Vulnerable Lives in Literature and Culture presents an examination of ecoprecarity - the precarious lives that humans lead in the process and event of ecological disaster, and the increasing precarious state of the environment itself as a result of human interventions - in contemporary literary-cultural texts. It studies the representation of 'invasion narratives' of the human body and the earth by alien life forms, the ecodystopian vision that informs much environmental thought in popular cultures, the states of ontological integrity and genetic belonging in the age of cloning, xenotransplantation and biotechnology's 'capitalisation' of life itself, and the construction of the 'wild' in these texts. It pays attention to the ecological uncanny and the monstrous that haunts ecodystopias and forms of natureculture that emerge in the bioeconomies since the late twentieth century.

The Human Rights Graphic Novel - Drawing it Just Right (Hardcover): Pramod K Nayar The Human Rights Graphic Novel - Drawing it Just Right (Hardcover)
Pramod K Nayar
R4,583 Discovery Miles 45 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book studies human rights discourse across a variety of graphic novels, both fiction and non-fiction, originating in different parts of the world, from India to South Africa, Sarajevo to Vietnam, with texts on the Holocaust, the Partition of the Indian subcontinent, the Rwandan and Sarajevan genocides, the Vietnam War, comfort women in World War II and the Civil Rights movement in the USA, to mention a few. The book demonstrates the emergence of the 'universal' subject of human rights, despite the variations in contexts. It shows how war, rape, genocide, abuse, social iniquity, caste and race erode personhood in multiple ways in the graphic novel, which portrays the construction of vulnerable subjects, the cultural trauma of collectives, the crisis and necessity of witnessing, and resilience-resistance through specific representational and aesthetic strategies. It covers a large number of authors and artists: Joe Sacco, Joe Kubert, Matt Johnson-Walter Pleece, Guy Delisle, Appupen, Thi Bui, Olivier Kugler and others. Through a study of these vastly different authors and styles, the book proposes that the graphic novel as a form is perfectly suited to the 'culture' and the lingua franca of human rights due to its amenability to experimentation and the sheer range within the form. The book will appeal to scholars in comics studies, human rights studies, visual culture studies and to the general reader with an interest in these fields.

Protocol for Somatic Embryogenesis in Woody Plants (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Shri Mohan Jain, Pramod K. Gupta Protocol for Somatic Embryogenesis in Woody Plants (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Shri Mohan Jain, Pramod K. Gupta
R7,757 Discovery Miles 77 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

World population is increasing at an alarming rate and this has resulted in increasing tremendously the demand for tree products such as wood for construction materials, fuel and paper, fruits, oils and medicines etc. This has put immense pressure on the world's supplies of trees and raw material to industry and will continue to do so as long as human population continues to grow. Also, the quality of human diet, especially nutritional components, is adversely affected due to limited genetic improvement of most of fruit trees. Thus there is an immediate need to increase productivity of trees. Improvement has been made through conventional breeding methods, however, conventional breeding is very slow due to long life cycle of trees. A basic strategy in tree improvement is to capture genetic gain through clonal propagation. Clonal propagation via organogenesis is being used for the production of selected elite individual trees. However, the methods are labour intensive, costly, and produce low volumes. Genetic gain can now be captured through somatic embryogenesis. Formation of embryos from somatic cells by a process resembling zygotic embryogenesis is one of the most important features of plants. In 1958, Reinert in Germany and Steward in USA independently reported somatic embryogenesis in carrot cultures. Since then, tremendous progress in somatic embryogenesis of woody and non-woody plants has taken place. It offers a potentially large-scale propagation system for superior clones.

Alzheimer's Disease Memoirs - Poetics of the Forgetting Self (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Pramod K Nayar Alzheimer's Disease Memoirs - Poetics of the Forgetting Self (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Pramod K Nayar
R3,170 Discovery Miles 31 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines writings by people living with Alzheimer's Disease and their caregivers. Its focus areas include the construction of the self in the face of diminishing linguistic and cognitive abilities, the stigmatization of ageing, the various narrative strategies that these texts (often collaborative) employ, the health activism and advocacy generated via a 'biosociality,' and the ethics of care. It examines the 'disease writing' genre about a condition that ravages the ability to use language. It serves as a "literary" examination of the work done in this area through a critical reading of the memoirs of those with AD and caregivers and a healthy dose of literary theory. The book is a valuable resource for those interested in literary and critical theory and researchers in the field of ageing/dementia studies.

Human Rights and Literature - Writing Rights (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Pramod K Nayar Human Rights and Literature - Writing Rights (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Pramod K Nayar
R3,401 Discovery Miles 34 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Set at the intersection of Human Rights, social justice and Literature, this cutting edge book examines a range of literary texts, fiction, plays and poetry, and through them considers representations of Human Rights and their violations. Examining violated bodies and subjects, the settings and environments in which these are embedded and the witnessing of atrocities, it considers how the 'subject' (or 'person' of Human Rights) emerges within fiction or poetry. Structured so as to move outward from the individual body to the world, the study progresses from the preconditions or settings for Human Rights violations through to atrocity, from witnessing to the making of a specific kind of public around traumatic recall. It addresses representations of destroyed corporeality and subjectivity, the violations and dissolution of the subject and the construction of trauma-memory citizenship to the making of communities of mourning. Through a broad study of texts from different genres, this text reveals how Literature both documents the basic human aspirations of happiness, security and hope, but also the limitations and the violations of these aspirations.
