Handbook of Qualitative Cross-Cultural Research Methods - A Social Science Perspective (Hardcover): Pranee Liamputtong Handbook of Qualitative Cross-Cultural Research Methods - A Social Science Perspective (Hardcover)
Pranee Liamputtong
R5,077 Discovery Miles 50 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Handbook provides an in-depth discussion on doing cross-cultural research more ethically, sensibly and responsibly with diverse groups of people around the globe. It focuses on cross-cultural research in the social sciences where researchers who are often from Western, educated and rich backgrounds are conducting research with individuals from different socio-cultural settings that are often non-Western, illiterate and poor. Covering both theoretical perspectives as well as practical ways to conduct research in cross-cultural settings, the contributors explore research work across Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America. Chapters provide keen insights into Indigenous research methods and approaches to cross-cultural research with a range of different groups of Indigenous peoples, highlighting the ethical and methodological challenges for researchers conducting cross-cultural research. Top scholars in the field suggest practical tips and information on lessons they have learnt to make this a useful tool kit for early-career researchers and students. This will be a critical read for students of development studies, transnational studies and anthropology who are interested in pursuing cross-cultural research in diverse settings. It is also an invigorating read for researchers who conduct cross-cultural research as well as those who work with people from ethnic minorities and refugees.

Pranee Liamputtong
R3,030 Discovery Miles 30 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the issues encountered by children and young people who are living with HIV/AIDS. It examines their lived experiences associated with HIV/AIDS, and studies groups of children and youngsters from around the globe. Connecting empirical information with real-life situations, the book brings together results from empirical research that relates to these children and young people. Its chapters can be used as evidence for health care providers to implement socially and culturally appropriate services to assist individuals and groups of children and young people who are living with HIV/AIDS in many societies. Many of these young people are from the most marginalized and vulnerable groups; and many have been orphaned by the death of their HIV-positive parents. Marginalized young people such as refugees, migrants and street children are most at risk due to the use of illicit drugs, their exposure to unprotected sex (in exchange for food, money and protection), and stigma associated with their marginalized lives. The impact that HIV/AIDS has on the opportunities for these young people to be able to lead healthy adult lives is considerable. This book gives a voice to these children and young people and advances our understanding of their lived experiences and needs.

Women, Motherhood and Living with HIV/AIDS - A Cross-Cultural Perspective (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Pranee Liamputtong Women, Motherhood and Living with HIV/AIDS - A Cross-Cultural Perspective (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Pranee Liamputtong
R4,706 Discovery Miles 47 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There are about 34 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS. Half are women. There has been a dramatic global increase in the rates of women living with HIV/AIDS. Among young women, especially in developing countries, infection rates are rapidly increasing. Many of these women are also mothers with young infants. When a woman is labeled as having HIV, she is treated with suspicion and her morality is being questioned. Previous research has suggested that women living with HIV/AIDS can be affected by delay in diagnosis, inferior access to health care services, internalized stigma and a poor utilization of health services. This makes it extremely difficult for women to take care of their own health needs. Women are also reluctant to disclose their HIV-positive status as they fear this may result in physical feelings of shame, social ostracism, violence, or expulsion from home. Women living with HIV/AIDS who are also mothers carry a particularly heavy burden of being HIV-infected. This unique book attempts to put together results from empirical research and focuses on issues relevant to women, motherhood and living with HIV/AIDS which have occurred to individual women in different parts of the globe. The book comprises chapters written by researchers who carry out their projects in different parts of the world, and each chapter contains empirical information based on real life situations. This can be used as evidence for health care providers to implement socially and culturally appropriate services to assist individuals and groups who are living with HIV/AIDS in many societies. The book is of interest to scholars and students in the domains of anthropology, sociology, social work, nursing, public health & medicine and health professionals who have a specific interest in issues concerning women who are mothers and living with HIV/AIDS from cross-cultural perspective.

Carolyn Westall, Pranee Liamputtong
R2,966 Discovery Miles 29 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Globally, postnatal depression (PND) is a growing public health problem. PND affects 10 to 15% of women in Western society. It caused by a combination of biological, psychological and social factors. Two models have attempted to define and explain PND; the biomedical and the sociological models. The traditional biomedical model views PND as a medical condition which implies there is individual pathology and abnormality. Whilst the biomedical model has been the dominant model in treating PND, it has been criticized by feminist sociologists and psychologists for its rigidity in defining and explaining PND. In contrast, the psychosocial model of health acknowledges the biological factors that impact on emotional well-being, but places more emphasis on the personal and social factors that impact on emotional well-being, but places more emphasis on the personal and social factors that contribute to depressive symptoms such as gender, poverty, social disadvantage and social class. The central argument throughout this book is the importance of support before and after the birth for women's emotional well-being. This book will also include women's journeys through pregnancy, childbirth, motherhood, postnatal depression, and resolution. To date, literature has focused on women's lived experiences of PND rather than their personal journeys through pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood. Additionally, the adjustment to fatherhood has received less attention. For example, little is known about the impact of postnatal depression on the partner, what support partners offer when women with the intention to fill the gap in knowledge of cultural and social issues relating to pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood for woman who were diagnosed with, and had resolved, PND.

Conducting cross-cultural research is rife with methodological, ethical and moral challenges. Researchers are challenged with many issues in carrying out their research with people in cross-cultural arenas. In this book, I attempt to bring together salient issues for the conduct of culturally appropriate research. The task of undertaking cross-cultural research can present researchers with unique opportunities, and yet dilemmas. The book will provide some thought-provoking points so that our research may proceed relatively well and yet ethical in our approach. The subject of the book is on the ethical, methodological, political understanding and practical procedures in undertaking cross-cultural research. The book will bring readers through a series of questions: who am I working with? What ethical and moral considerations do I need to observe? How should I conduct the research which is culturally appropriate to the needs of people I am researching? How do I deal with language issues? How will I negotiate access? And What research methods should I apply to ensure a successful research process? The book is intended for postgraduate students who are undertaking research as part of their degrees. It is also intended for researchers who are working in cross-cultural studies and in poor nations.

Infant Feeding Practices - A Cross-Cultural Perspective (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.): Pranee Liamputtong Infant Feeding Practices - A Cross-Cultural Perspective (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.)
Pranee Liamputtong
R4,739 Discovery Miles 47 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It's natural... It's unsightly... It's normal... It's dangerous. To breastfeed or not? For millions of women around the world, this personal decision is influenced by numerous social, cultural, and health factors. Infant Feeding Practices is the first book to delve into these factors from a global perspective, revealing striking similarities and differences from country to country. Dispatches from Asia, Australia, Africa, the U.K., and the U.S. explore as wide a gamut of salient issues affecting feeding practices as traditional beliefs about colostrums, "breast is best" campaigns, partner attitudes, workplace culture, direct government intervention, and the pressure to be a "good mother." Throughout these informative pages, women are seen balancing innovation and tradition to nurture healthy, thriving babies. A sampling of topics covered: * Policy versus practice in infant feeding. * Infant feeding in the age of AIDS. * Managing the lactating body: the view from the U.S. * Motherhood, work, and feeding. * The effects of migration on infant feeding. * From breastfeeding tradition to optimal breastfeeding practice. Infant Feeding Practices is a first-of-its-kind resource for researchers and practioners in maternal and child health, public health, global health, and cultural anthropology seeking empirical findings and culturally diverse information on this sensitive issue.

Pranee Liamputtong
R1,684 Discovery Miles 16 840 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Qualitative Research Methods, fifth edition, is one of the few texts on qualitative research methods written and published in Australia. This multidisciplinary text is written simply and provides an accessible and practical guide to conducting and analysing qualitative data effectively for undergraduate and postgraduate students entering people-facing professions. It agrees with the ideology that in order to understand people's behaviour, we must first attempt to understand the meanings and interpretations that people give to that behaviour. The content and pedagogical approach introduces students to an updated overview of the research process and helps them navigate through the practical ways of carrying out qualitative research methods: from writing a qualitative research proposal to the application of qualitative enquiry across different groups of individuals. Qualitative Research Methods continues to be an easy to read, solid foundation for students in a variety of disciplines and ensures they are well prepared to conduct qualitative research across real-world projects.

Chen and colleagues (2004: 157) contend, online technologies provide "researchers with an array of alternative arenas for data collection". As we shall see in this volume, there are numerous ways for social researchers to undertake their research. In many ways, online research provides researchers with numerous attractive environments that offline research may not be able to do. But we shall see too that online researchers have come to realise that many issues that we have adopted for offline research can be problematic when we attempt to do the same for online research and this includes the methods of data collection and ethics. Online research can also be problematic and there are important issues which researchers need to think through and deal with. I have attempted to cover these issues in the chapters in this volume. Essentially, contributors discuss more or less along the methodological, practical and personal issues in doing their online research. Some chapters may lean towards a more formal type of writing and are more theoretical while others may be more subjective and practical. But this is the intention of this book, as reflected in its title.

Focus Group Methodology - Principle and Practice (Paperback, New): Pranee Liamputtong Focus Group Methodology - Principle and Practice (Paperback, New)

Cross-cultural research is rife with ethical and methodological challenges but, despite the increased demand for such research, discussions on 'culturally sensitive methodologies' are still largely neglected. Consequently, researchers often find themselves faced with difficulties but lack information on how to deal with them. This text provides an in-depth discussion on how to perform qualitative research in cross-cultural contexts with an emphasis on a more ethical, sensible and responsible approach. Pranee Liamputtong suggests culturally sensitive and appropriate research methods that would work well with cultural groups. She offers thought-provoking perspectives and diverse cultural examples which will be of value to both novice and experienced cross-cultural researchers. Throughout the volume there are references to the excellent work of many cross-cultural researchers who have paved the way in different social and cultural settings.

Virginia Dickson-Swift, Erica Lyn James, Pranee Liamputtong
R2,454 Discovery Miles 24 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Undertaking qualitative research on sensitive topics often raises a variety of ethical problems. Based on empirical research, this book documents experiences throughout the entire research process: from conceptualization, ethics approval, fieldwork, to analysis and publication. It presents readers with stories from the researcher's perspective and synthesizes these experiences into a conceptual framework that will assist researchers to undertake qualitative research. Each section discusses potential pitfalls, provides quotes and stories and reviews the relevant literature and theory, providing readers with a description of the process of conducting sensitive research from the perspective of those actually doing the research. This is not a methodology textbook, rather, it discusses the issues faced by researchers during the conduct of qualitative research on sensitive topics, such as death and dying, sexuality, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, cancer. It provides practical recommendations for researchers and Research Ethics Committees. It will also be a useful resource for anyone interested in undertaking a research project on sensitive topics and for those teaching qualitative methods across a broad range of disciplines.

Although reproduction including infertility, abortion, childbearing and motherhood is a significant human experience, its social meaning is shaped by the culture in which birthing women live. Reproduction and its management, therefore, occur within the social and cultural context of the event. As such, reproductive beliefs and practices differ across social and cultural settings. This book focuses on reproduction, childbearing and motherhood. In this volume, the authors show that despite the modernisation of the society and advanced medical technology and knowledge in reproduction, traditions continue to exert influence on how the women and their families manage their reproduction, childbearing and motherhood in their societies.
