This is a new type of calculus book: Students who master this text will be well versed in calculus and, in addition, possess a useful working knowledge of one of the most important mathematical software systems, namely, MACSYMA. This will equip them with the mathematical competence they need for science and engi neering and the competitive workplace. The choice of MACSYMA is not essential for the didactic goal of the book. In fact, any of the other major mathematical software systems, e. g., AXIOM, MATHEMATICA, MAPLE, DERIVE, or REDUCE, could have been taken for the examples and for acquiring the skill in using these systems for doing mathematics on computers. The symbolic and numerical calcu lations described in this book will be easily performed in any of these systems by slight modification of the syntax as soon as the student understands and masters the MACSYMA examples in this book. What is important, however, is that the student gets all the information necessary to design and execute the calculations in at least one concrete implementation language as this is done in this book and also that the use of the mathematical software system is completely integrated with the text. In these times of globalization, firms which are unable to hire adequately trained technology experts will not prosper. Tumors of the Brain and Spine focuses primarily on approaches to the treatment of benign, primary low-grade to high-grade, and metastatic tumors in the brain and spine, as practiced by surgeons and clinicians at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. The book is written mainly for the primary care oncologist, general neurologist, and general neurosurgeon. Gilbert examines the often contradictory ways in which hermaphrodites were represented as both spiritual ideals and sexual grotesques; as freaks, erotic objects, and medical curiosities; and as literary metaphors and signs of social decay.

This volume presents papers from the 2nd Scandinavian Workshop on Algorithm Theory. The contributions describe original research on algorithms and data structures, in all areas, including combinatorics, computational geometry, parallel computing, and graph theory. The majority of the papers focus on the design and complexity analysis of: data structures, text algorithms, and sequential and parallel algorithms for graph problems and for geometric problems. Examples of tech- niques presented include: - efficient ways to find approximation algorithms for the maximum independent set problem and for graph coloring; - exact estimation of the expected search cost for skip lists; - construction of canonical representations of partial 2-trees and partial 3-trees in linear time; - efficient triangulation of planar point sets and convex polygons.

A rhetorical analysis of female stand-up comics that explores the relationships among humor, gender, and power in contemporary culture. How do contemporary American female comics perform onstage, and what does this performance revel about power relations in our culture as well as the existence of a "female" and, more specifically, "feminist" genre of stand-up comedy? In this long overdue study of women and stand-up comedy, Joanne R. Gilbert explores these questions to better illuminate the social, constructive, and cultural implications of power and gender in popular entertainment. Gilbert's research recognizes the problems that arise from assumptions made about the genres of "female" and "feminist" humor and ultimately suggests that these are part of a larger genre she calls "marginal humor." Performing Marginality provides a historical overview of female stand-ups and offers a taxonomy of comedic postures assumed by contemporary female comics, providing a useful way to categorize this often overlooked genre of performance. Performing Marginality also examines problems in existing studies on the subject, the politics involved with marginal humor, and the role of audience in comic performance. This book develops the notion of "performing marginality" not only as the way female comics perform their gender onstage, but as the means by which all of us construct, contest, and negotiate our gendered, racialized, and otherwise marked identities in everyday life.
