Security Engineering - A Guide to Building Dependable Distributed Systems, Third Edition (Hardcover, 3rd Edition): R. Anderson Security Engineering - A Guide to Building Dependable Distributed Systems, Third Edition (Hardcover, 3rd Edition)
R. Anderson
R1,358 Discovery Miles 13 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Now that there's software in everything, how can you make anything secure? Understand how to engineer dependable systems with this newly updated classic In Security Engineering: A Guide to Building Dependable Distributed Systems, Third Edition Cambridge University professor Ross Anderson updates his classic textbook and teaches readers how to design, implement, and test systems to withstand both error and attack. This book became a best-seller in 2001 and helped establish the discipline of security engineering. By the second edition in 2008, underground dark markets had let the bad guys specialize and scale up; attacks were increasingly on users rather than on technology. The book repeated its success by showing how security engineers can focus on usability. Now the third edition brings it up to date for 2020. As people now go online from phones more than laptops, most servers are in the cloud, online advertising drives the Internet and social networks have taken over much human interaction, many patterns of crime and abuse are the same, but the methods have evolved. Ross Anderson explores what security engineering means in 2020, including: How the basic elements of cryptography, protocols, and access control translate to the new world of phones, cloud services, social media and the Internet of Things Who the attackers are - from nation states and business competitors through criminal gangs to stalkers and playground bullies What they do - from phishing and carding through SIM swapping and software exploits to DDoS and fake news Security psychology, from privacy through ease-of-use to deception The economics of security and dependability - why companies build vulnerable systems and governments look the other way How dozens of industries went online - well or badly How to manage security and safety engineering in a world of agile development - from reliability engineering to DevSecOps The third edition of Security Engineering ends with a grand challenge: sustainable security. As we build ever more software and connectivity into safety-critical durable goods like cars and medical devices, how do we design systems we can maintain and defend for decades? Or will everything in the world need monthly software upgrades, and become unsafe once they stop?

The Adaptive Character of Thought (Paperback): John R. Anderson The Adaptive Character of Thought (Paperback)
John R. Anderson
R1,532 Discovery Miles 15 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This important volume examines the phenomena of cognition from an adaptive perspective. Rather than adhering to the typical practice in cognitive psychology of trying to predict behavior from a model of cognitive mechanisms, this book develops a number of models that successfully predict behavior from the structure of the environment to which cognition is adapted. The methodology -- called rational analysis -- involves specifying the information-processing goals of the system, the structure of the environment, and the computational constraints on the system, allowing predictions about behavior to be made by determining what behavior would be optimal under these assumptions. The Adaptive Character of Thought applies this methodology in great detail to four cognitive phenomena: memory, categorization, causal inference, and problem solving.

R3,143 R2,919 Discovery Miles 29 190 Save R224 (7%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides an accessible space for interdisciplinary scholarship and narrative through an analysis of the power of media and sports, focusing on the intersectionality of identity, politics, social justice, and social movements within this context. Contributors examine how identities coalesce in sports and discuss the ways in which sports provide spaces for marginalized communities and create unique platforms that shift how society defines identity. Athletes' identities and actions-and mass media's representation thereof-can influence both the perceptions of society as a whole and how individuals view themselves, contributors argue. Each chapter delves into how different aspects of identity, including race, gender, disability, and sexuality, have developed and influenced social change, with a strong focus on lived experiences of both scholars and athletes from marginalized communities. Scholars of media studies, communication, sociology, and kinesiology may find this book particularly useful.

Optimization Modelling Using R (Hardcover): Timothy R. Anderson Optimization Modelling Using R (Hardcover)
Timothy R. Anderson
R2,598 Discovery Miles 25 980 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book covers using R for doing optimization, a key area of operations research, which has been applied to virtually every industry. The focus is on linear and mixed integer optimization. It uses an algebraic modeling approach for creating formulations that pairs naturally with an algebraic implementation in R. With the rapid rise of interest in data analytics, a data analytics platform is key. Working technology and business professionals need an awareness of the tools and language of data analysis. R reduces the barrier to entry for people to start using data analytics tools. Philosophically, the book emphasizes creating formulations before going into implementation. Algebraic representation allows for clear understanding and generalization of large applications, and writing formulations is necessary to explain and convey the modeling decisions made. Appendix A introduces R. Mathematics is used at the level of subscripts and summations Refreshers are provided in Appendix B. This book: * Provides and explains code so examples are relatively clear and self-contained. * Emphasizes creating algebraic formulations before implementing. * Focuses on application rather than algorithmic details. * Embodies the philosophy of reproducible research. * Uses open-source tools to ensure access to powerful optimization tools. * Promotes open-source: all materials are available on the author's github repository. * Demonstrates common debugging practices with a troubleshooting emphasis specific to optimization modeling using R. * Provides code readers can adapt to their own applications . This book can be used for graduate and undergraduate courses for students without a background in optimization and with varying mathematical backgrounds.

Conformable Dynamic Equations on Time Scales is devoted to the qualitative theory of conformable dynamic equations on time scales. This book summarizes the most recent contributions in this area, and vastly expands on them to conceive of a comprehensive theory developed exclusively for this book. Except for a few sections in Chapter 1, the results here are presented for the first time. As a result, the book is intended for researchers who work on dynamic calculus on time scales and its applications. Reference Librarianship - Notes from the Trenches (Paperback): Peter Sprenkle, Charles R. Anderson Reference Librarianship - Notes from the Trenches (Paperback)
Peter Sprenkle, Charles R. Anderson
R978 R878 Discovery Miles 8 780 Save R100 (10%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A daily diary of actual interactions between a reference desk librarian and his patrons Reference Librarianship documents a year in the life of a young librarian working in the "trenches" at a library in the Midwestern United States. This one-of-a-kind book provides a daily diary of every librarian/patron transaction-no matter how mundane or absurd-to demonstrate not only how advances in technology have affected the reference librarian's job, but how the public's expectations have changed, as well. The book also includes observations by a now-retired reference librarian on the current state of the field based on these unedited interactions. Over the past two decades, the job of reference librarian has seen many changes. But in many ways, reference desk work hasn't changed a bit, with its mix of odd, humorous, routine, and ridiculous requests that capture what it's like to deal with patrons day after day. Reference Librarianship paints a clear picture of the field for library school students, provides emotional and philosophical support to practitioners, and reminds library administrators of what life was like on the "front lines." A sampling of the daily transactions documented in Reference Librarianship: Monday, May 19, 2003: pencil pencil network down I tell people that I can't sign them up for an Internet terminal because the network is down and they just stand there, staring into space One of them asks for three days worth of newspapers microfiche machine explanation Sorry, Sir, the network is still down (multiply by twenty and insert randomly into the remainder of the day) magic tricks, but he pretty much knew where they were One of our large interior plate glass windows shattered. No one was hurt and it made a fascinating noise, like a crystal waterfall landing on soil. "Books on prostitution, you know-whores?" Someone from the County called to ask if any criminal activity had occurred on a particular street. Someone else referred her to us. She was dubious-with good reason. "Math puzzles." Okay. I show him the books. "Just math." Certainly. I show him the books. "I need them in Spanish." Grrr ... Reference Librarianship is an enlightening, educational, and entertaining look at the real world of reference desk work. It's an essential read for reference librarians (both public and academic), library administrators, and library school students, as well as anyone who works with the public.

The Atomic Components of Thought (Hardcover): John R. Anderson, Christian J. Lebiere The Atomic Components of Thought (Hardcover)
John R. Anderson, Christian J. Lebiere
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book achieves a goal that was set 25 years ago when the HAM theory of human memory was published. This theory reflected one of a number of then-current efforts to create a theory of human cognition that met the twin goals of precision and complexity. Up until then the standard for precision had been the mathematical theories of the 1950s and 1960s. These theories took the form of precise models of specific experiments along with some informal, verbally-stated understanding of how they could be extended to new experiments. They seemed to fall far short of capturing the breadth and power of human cognition that was being demonstrated by the new experimental work in human cognition. The next 10 years saw two major efforts to address the problems of scope. In 1976, the ACT theory was first described and included a production rule system of procedural memory to complement HAM's declarative memory. This provided a computationally adequate system which was indeed capable of accounting for all sorts of cognition. In 1993, a new version of ACT--ACT-R--was published. This was an effort to summarize the theoretical progress made on skill acquisition in the intervening 10 years and to tune the subsymbolic level of ACT-R with the insights of the rational analysis of cognition.
Although the appearance of generally-available, full-function code set off a series of events which was hardly planned, it resulted in this book. The catalyst for this was the emergence of a user community. Lebiere insisted that assembling a critical mass of users was essential to the ultimate success of the theory and that a physical gathering was the only way to achieve that goal. This resulted in the First Annual ACT-R Summer School and Workshop, held in 1994. In writing the book, the authors became seized by an aspiration that went beyond just describing the theory correctly. They decided to try to display what the theory could do by collecting together and describing some of its in-house applications. This book reflects decades of work in ACT-R accumulated by many researchers. The chapters are authored by the people that did that particular work. No doubt the reader will be impressed by the scope of the research and the quality of the individual work. Less apparent, but no less important, was the effort that everyone put into achieving the overall consistency and technical integrity of the book. This is the first work in cognitive science to precisely model such a wide range of phenomena with a single theory.

Binaural and Spatial Hearing in Real and Virtual Environments (Hardcover): Robert Gilkey, Timothy R. Anderson Binaural and Spatial Hearing in Real and Virtual Environments (Hardcover)
Robert Gilkey, Timothy R. Anderson
R5,430 Discovery Miles 54 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The current popular and scientific interest in virtual environments has provided a new impetus for investigating binaural and spatial hearing. However, the many intriguing phenomena of spatial hearing have long made it an exciting area of scientific inquiry. Psychophysical and physiological investigations of spatial hearing seem to be converging on common explanations of underlying mechanisms. These understandings have in turn been incorporated into sophisticated yet mathematically tractable models of binaural interaction. Thus, binaural and spatial hearing is one of the few areas in which professionals are soon likely to find adequate physiological explanations of complex psychological phenomena that can be reasonably and usefully approximated by mathematical and physical models. This volume grew out of the Conference on Binaural and Spatial Hearing, a four-day event held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in response to rapid developments in binaural and spatial hearing research and technology. Meant to be more than just a proceedings, it presents chapters that are longer than typical proceedings papers and contain considerably more review material, including extensive bibliographies in many cases. Arranged into topical sections, the chapters represent major thrusts in the recent literature. The authors of the first chapter in each section have been encouraged to take a broad perspective and review the current state of literature. Subsequent chapters in each section tend to be somewhat more narrowly focused, and often emphasize the authors' own work. Thus, each section provides overview, background, and current research on a particular topic. This book is significant in that it reviews the important work during the past 10 to 15 years, and provides greater breadth and depth than most of the previous works.

R. Anderson, J. D Dewar, Heather McKee, Ian Treasaden
R5,643 Discovery Miles 56 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edition has been revised throughout to take account of recent changes and to incorporate amendments required due to the publication of the revised BS 5328. The manual provides information on all aspects of the ready-mixed concrete industry, from basic materials and their properties to the production, quality control and use of ready-mixed concrete. Discussion of the qualities of concrete and the achievement of quality requirements leads to the consideration of specifying concrete quantities. Attention is then turned from production to delivery. The authors discuss arguments for choosing ready-mixed concrete, and deal with the fundamental issues of obtaining quotations, ordering and handling. While providing a detailed ready reference, this book also gives the reader a perspective on the industry as a whole.

Families in Business - The Next Generation of Family Evolution (Hardcover): Kathleen R Anderson, Hermann Frank, Clay Dibrell,... Families in Business - The Next Generation of Family Evolution (Hardcover)
Kathleen R Anderson, Hermann Frank, Clay Dibrell, Esra Memili
R3,829 Discovery Miles 38 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers a 'contemporary' understanding of families in business and serves as a springboard for ongoing evolution of families, their composition, transformations, and activities. The first chapter in this volume highlights the different approaches to family and concludes that identifying and understanding the entity 'family in business' is the cornerstone to understanding behaviours of family businesses. The concept of 'family in business' as a socially constructed entity allows for not only a broader scope of the concept to include individuals who share a faith (chapter 2), but also multi- generational families and chosen families. Narratives, or stories, are means for families in business to mark the boundary of the family in business (chapter 3), because not all members of the family are necessarily members of the family in business. Families and their businesses influence each other (chapter 4) and engender the family influence on the firm ('familiness') and firm influence of the family ('enterpriseness'). The last two chapters are dedicated to transgenerational family businesses, with a focus on learning between generations-chapter 5 highlights the importance of unlearning (to learn new knowledge and different ways of conducting business) and the final chapter focuses on what knowledge is actually transferred relative to initial plans. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Entrepreneurship & Regional Development.

Edgar Allan Poe notoriously identified "the death . . . of a beautiful woman" as "the most poetical topic in the world." Despite that cringeworthy claim, Poe drew creative inspiration from female authors, and women figure prominently among the artists and critics fascinated by the writer's creative legacy. A book-length work about the various ways in which women-Poe's female contemporaries, scholars, writers and artists, as well as women characters in Poe adaptations-have influenced perceptions of Poe is long overdue. Covering a time frame that extends from the mid-nineteenth century to the twenty-first, this collection features essays about all of these subjects. One goal of this book is recognizing how women have helped establish Poe's reputation in the U.S. and abroad. The other is drawing attention to ways that constructions of womanhood accepted by Poe are revised in popular culture, a sphere where artists-in film, fiction, and comics-build on the subversive potential of Poe's work while exposing its ideological limitations. Poe and Women will appeal not only to Poe specialists but also to anyone interested in his ongoing relevance to gender discussions inside and outside the academy.

Issue framing is the way that people, especially politicians, get other people to view a particular problem or issue. By framing the issue in a particular way, the goal is to get people to think about the issue, to believe that an action is required and, most importantly, to believe that a particular action (the one being proposed by the framer) is the right one. The use of language and imagery is an essential part of issue framing and has been an integral part of the presidency since our nation's founding, but it has become particularly important since Theodore Roosevelt began to take his message directly to the people. This work examines a selected speech delivered by every president from Roosevelt through Barack Obama to show how language has been instrumental in directing policy. Each chapter will examine the situation or background for the problem, include a transcript of the speech the president delivered, and conclude with an analysis of the speech in terms of the particular frame that the speech utilized and the eventual outcome, or policy direction, inspired by the speech.

Earl R. Anderson

"Medievalism" in this study includes contemporary fiction set in the Middle Ages, and medieval-modern hybrids in which a modern story incorporates medieval elements. Anderson examines the role of storytelling options and rhetorical tropes in over sixty fictions, by more than forty authors, in five languages on four continents. Medievalist fiction got its "postmodern" start with Calvino, Fuentes, Carpentier, and Eco. Its momentum increased in every decade from the 1990s. Some "canonical" authors are singled out for extended review: Calvino, Fuentes, Eco, Saramago, Kristeva, Coelho, Aridjis, and Maalouf. His analysis includes authors whose medievalism gets less attention, or none, in academic criticism: Laura Esquivel, Tariq Ali, Matthew Pearl, Matilde Asensi, Ildefonso Falcones, Andrew Davison, Bernard Cornwell, Donnal Woolfolk Cross, Ariana Franklin, Nicole Griffith, Levi Grossman, Conn Iggulden, Edward Rutherfurd, Javier Sierra, Alan Moore, and Brenda Vantrease (among others). In part I of this study, Anderson discusses story-telling options that establish a rhetorical foundation for postmodern artistry: narrative conceits, genre-plurality, artistic uses of time, intertextuality, and a wide range of "medievalizing' tropes that profile the "medieval temper" in high resolution. He defines "postmodernism" as negation followed by positive assertions, and the "medieval temper" as a dissonance of conformist and rebellious responses to authority and hierarchy in medieval world orders. He includes orientalist and Mesoamerican medievalisms in the scope of his survey. In part II, Anderson discusses the negative responses of postmodernism in five categories, viz.: four "deconstructive" tropes (deconstruction, decentering, defamiliarization, demystification); paradox; equillopence (the basis of skepticism); the "rhetoric of disappointment" (which he calls "hypallage"); and postmodern negation, which gives way to remainder-history in History of the Siege of Lisbon, which he interprets as an allegory of neohistorical composition fleshed out by Lacanian psychoanalysis. In part III, Anderson posits four "hard problems" in medievalist fiction, on analogy to le difficolta cultivated by Renaissance artists. These are problematized subjectivity; intentional semiotics; steganography and steganalysis (the art of concealing signs and finding them); and representations of "the end of the Middle Ages." Here, chronology fails. The decline of chivalry, crudely conventional, lends itself to parody. A more nuanced approach is possible in comparisons of medieval and Renaissance art, exemplified in Tariq Ali, Amin Maalouf, Dan Brown, and with probative force in the fiction of Fuentes, Kristeva, and Sierra. Anderson concludes with a postscript, in which he applies the "Pareto effect" to challenge the reader to wonder why authors who are demonstrably talented for artistry receive little or no attention in academic criticsm.

Family business is the most prominent form of business organization, and its importance to the global economy cannot be under-estimated. Until recently, the impact of the family on entrepreneurial firms has been under-researched, leading to a conceptual gap between the two areas of study, and an underestimation of the contribution of family systems to entrepreneurial success. Starting from the consideration that family is an intimate and essential aspect of entrepreneurship, this book considers connections between family, family members, entrepreneurial behavior, family business, society and the economy. Bringing together a unique range of international contributions, it offers new theoretical perspectives and empirical insights as well as an in-depth consideration of the diversity of contexts and processes associated with entrepreneurship in family settings. Above all, this book opens up a comprehensive research agenda on the linkages between family, family firms and entrepreneurship and will be of interest to researchers, educators and advanced students of entrepreneurship, small firms and family business.
