This book is the first in eight years to address the purposes,
patterns, and prospects of Chinese arms transfers, and the only
book to address China's recent and provocative rise to prominence
as an arms trader since the mid-1980s. Focusing on the 1980s and
the prospects for the 1990s, the work analyzes the principal arms
trade relationships of the People's Republic of China to provide a
greater understanding and more nuanced insight into the arms trade
policies and goals of the world's fourth largest arms supplier.
This study finds that the economic motive for arms exports--the
generating of foreign currency--while important, does not fully or
even adequately explain why the Chinese export arms. Rather,
Chinese arms exports should be seen in the light of political and
strategic motivations, which are often more important. This book
should appeal to both scholars and policymakers in the field of
international relations.
Transition metals open up new opportunities for synthesis, because
their means of bonding and their reaction mechanisms differ from
those of the elements of the s and p blocks. In the last two
decades the subject has mushroomed - established reactions are
seeing both technical improvements and increasing numbers of
applications, and new reactions are being developed. The
practicality of the subject is demonstrated by the large number of
publications coming from the process development laboratories of
pharmaceutical companies, and its importance is underlined by the
fact that three Nobel prizes have been awarded for discoveries in
this field in the 21st Century already.
"Organic Synthesis Using Transition Metals, 2nd Edition"
considers the ways in which transition metals, as catalysts and
reagents, can be used in organic synthesis, both for pharmaceutical
compounds and for natural products. It concentrates on the
bond-forming reactions that set transition metal chemistry apart
from "classical" organic chemistry. Each chapter is extensively
referenced and provides a convenient point of entry to the research
literature. Topics covered include: introduction to transition
metals in organic synthesiscoupling reactionsC-H
activationcarbonylative coupling reactionsalkene and alkyne
insertion reactionselectrophilic alkene and alkyne
complexesreactions of alkyne complexescarbene complexesh3- or
p-allyl -allyl complexesdiene, dienyl and arene
complexescycloaddition and cycloisomerisation reactions
For this second edition the text has been extensively revised
and expanded to reflect the significant improvements and advances
in the field since the first edition, as well as the large number
of new transition metal-catalysed processes that have come to
prominence in the last 10 years - for example the extraordinary
progress in coupling reactions using "designer" ligands, catalysis
using gold complexes, new opportunities arising from metathesis
chemistry, and C-H activation - without neglecting the well
established chemistry of metals such as palladium.
"Organic Synthesis Using Transition Metals, 2nd Edition" will
find a place on the bookshelves of advanced undergraduates and
postgraduates working in organic synthesis, catalysis, medicinal
chemistry and drug discovery. It is also useful for practising
researchers who want to refresh and enhance their knowledge of the
field.
Many industries have begun to recognize the potential support that
unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer, and this is no less true for
the commercial sector. Current research on this field is narrowly
focused on technological development to improve the functionality
of delivery and endurance of the drone delivery in logistics, as
well as on regulatory challenges posed by such operations. There is
a need for further attention to be applied to operational and
integration challenges associated with UAVs. Unmanned Aerial
Vehicles in Civilian Logistics and Supply Chain Management is a
collection of innovative research that investigates the
opportunities and challenges for the use of UAVs in logistics and
supply chain management with a specific aim to focus on the
multifaceted impact of drone delivery. While highlighting topics
including non-military operations, public management, and safety
culture, this book is ideally designed for government
administrators, managers, industry professionals, researchers, and
students.
Wordsworth's process of revision, his organization of poetic
volumes and his supplementary writings are often seen as distinct
from his poetic composition. Bates asserts that an analysis of
these supplementary writings and paratexts are necessary to a full
understanding of Wordsworth's poetry.
Whiteness, Pedagogy, Performance is unique in bringing together
these three important topics in the context of communication
teaching and scholarship with an eye toward interdisciplinary
perspectives. In fourteen chapters, the leading whiteness scholars
in the field of communication analyze the process of teaching and
learning and the complicated intersections of whiteness, racial
identity, and cross-racial dialogue. Toward these ends, these
essays offer a variety of theoretical and practical approaches to
the analysis of identity construction, racial privilege, and
pedagogies toward equality and social justice. Above all, for
teachers, students, and anyone interested in these issues, this
book is a challenge to re-think the ways our curricula, texts,
disciplinary boundaries, and moreover, how our interactions and
performances re-inscribe racial privileges. Chapters provide
innovative and accessible analyses of teaching and learning that
will appeal to students, teachers, administrators, and anyone
interested in how race works.
Wordsworth's process of revision, his organization of poetic
volumes and his supplementary writings are often seen as distinct
from his poetic composition. Bates asserts that an analysis of
these supplementary writings and paratexts are necessary to a full
understanding of Wordsworth's poetry. He examines Wordsworth's
career between 1800 and 1820 to reveal how supplementary prose,
promotion and parody were intertwined with debates on the creation
of reading publics, the role of the press and the enduring literary
character of England.
Reperfusion Therapy for Acute Myocardial Infarction provides a
comprehensive review of reperfusion therapy for ST-segment
elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Professor Eric R. Bates
and his international team of contributors examine current and
future reperfusion therapies for STEMI, in conjunction with the
latest clinical trials and guidelines, to bring the most in-depth
and thorough review of management strategies for these patients.
This source addresses key developments that can reduce logistical
barriers, improve times-to-treatment, and ensure that appropriate
medications are administered in patient care. Demonstrating the
benefits of reperfusion therapy, this volume: Examines fibrinolytic
agents that can be used alone or in combination with other care
regimens to improve the benefits of reperfusion therapy and reduce
the risks of treatment Summarizes the use of percutaneous coronary
intervention (PCI) across the spectrum of reperfusion therapy Helps
specialists identify barriers to the early treatment of patients in
various practice environments Reviews the clinical relevance and
implications of recent clinical trials and the integration of these
findings into the current practice of acute reperfusion therapy
Age is a nonreversible risk factor for atherosclerosis. The
atherosclerotic process begins early in life, progresses during the
middle years, and usually culminates in clinical disease towards
the later years of the life span. Since atherosclerosis is a
multifactorial disease, and many of the "risk factors" are time-
and age related, it has been difficult to sort out intrinsic aging
from environmental factors that operate over many years.
Furthermore, the role of genetic factors remains unknown. This
workshop has produced much worthwhile information that is helping
elucidate the impact of age on atherogenesis. Important strides
have been made in understanding the role of changes in the arterial
wall and of lipoproteins, platelets, and monocyte-derived
macrophages in the disease process. In parallel, our understanding
of the biology of aging has increased sufficiently so that these
two areas of interest can now profitably intersect. The proceedings
of this successful workshop emphasize that there is much to be
gained by continued interaction between those scientists interested
in the biology of aging at all levels and those interested in the
atherosclerotic process. Hopefully, we may eventually progress in
our understanding and reach the stage when atherosclerosis will no
longer be an inexorable concomitant of human aging. Edwin L.

This book was prepared with the idea of collecting some of the
multitudinous new literature on carbanions and pre senting it along
with the fundamentals of carbanion chemi stry. Some 400 papers from
the period 1976 to 1982 have been assimilated into the book along
with about an equal number of references (many to reviews) from the
earlier literature. The material is organized under the headings
Structures (with emphasis on the results of X-ray studies since
they unambiguously show the molecular geometry), Preparations, and
Reactions. Reactions, the largest topic, is divided into reactions
with electrophiles, eliminations, oxidations, and rearrangements.
Under these headings, carbanions without resonance stabilization
(0' carbanions) are generally discus sed first, and are further
subdivided into Sp3 (alkyl) followed by Sp2 (vinyl and aryl)
followed by sp (acetylenic); resonance stabilized (n) hydrocarbon
anions such as allyl and benzyl follow; lastly,
heteroatom-containing n carbanions such as enolates are considered.
Some references to carbanion equivalents are included at the end.

Medical Communication in Clinical Contexts is an edited collection
designed to show and tell how patient-centered medical
communication can be performed in clinical contexts. Medical
Communication in Clinical Contexts contains three primary themes:
An integrated view of health communication in applied clinical
contexts. An appreciation of medical communication as a
multidisciplinary, yet specialized, field of study. Medical
communication as simultaneously social scientific, humanistic, and
professional in orientation. Medical Communication in Clinical
Contexts is divided into four sections aimed at demonstrating the
three primary themes. The first and second sections primarily are
concerned with using theories and methods to examine acts of
communication to understand when medical communication has been
patient-centered and when it has needed improvement. The third and
fourth sections focus on theoretically and methodologically
informed communication interventions that seek to promote
patient-centered medical communication. Medical Communication in
Clinical Contexts demonstrates the power of communication to create
or interfere with the creation of a patient-centered medical
communication environment. The research interventions and applied
projects can serve as models for health communication
practitioners, medical communication scholars, and clinical
practitioners to improve their understanding of theories, methods,
and models for promoting patient-centered medical communication.
