This book presents twenty essays written in honour of the noted theologian and ecumenist Geoffrey Wainwright, Cushman Professor of Christian Theology at Duke University. The editors have assembled a remarkable international roster of contributors and have organized the volume around three major themes in Wainwright's work: worship, liturgy, and mission. Contributors include Nicholas Lossky, Eberhard Jungel, Dietrich Ritschl, and Gunther Gassman.
This is a study of Spirit-Christology--a contemporary theological model of the relationship between Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Del Colle measures this christological model against trinitarian theology and tests its viability. He investigates in particular the development of a Roman Catholic Spirit-Christology, which has arisen from within the modern neo-scholastic theological tradition. Contrary to other interpreters, Del Colle argues that an incarnational christology and a Spirit-Christology are not conflicting but complementary and that this is recognized by the older and deeper tradition. In conclusion, he seeks to demonstrate the productivity of the Spirit-Christological model in reference to three major areas of concern for contemporary systematic theology: cultural pluralism and diversity, emancipation and social praxis, and inter-religious dialogue.
It is imperative that Catholics and Evangelicals move beyond mutual stereotypes they may have of one another. In this book, part one provides a history of Evangelicalism and an answer the question of who is an Evangelical? Part two takes up specific issues that distinguish Catholics and Evangelicals. The method is intended to affirm a common faith while providing mutual understanding of the doctrines and practices that divide the two communities. It is directed more to the Catholic reader who when confronted by an Evangelical Christian often does not know how to respond. Special attention is given to the experiential aspects of Christian life that often place the Catholic Christian at a disadvantage such as a "personal relationship with Christ." By exposing the underlying doctrinal differences and then appealing to the experiential register in both traditions, it is hoped that the book will equip Catholics to anticipate the fruitful possibilities of this dialogue. By taking up the challenge of Evangelicalism to Catholics as well as exposing some of its weaknesses, it is hoped that a more robust and ecumenical Catholic identity will emerge for the reader.
