For courses in Java Programming Layered, Back-to-Basics Approach to
Java Programming This edition of Building Java Programs: A Back to
Basics Approach uses a layered strategy to introduce Java
programming and overcome the high failure rates that are common in
introductory computer science courses. The authors' proven and
class-tested "back to basics" approach introduces programming
fundamentals first, with new syntax and concepts added over
multiple chapters. Object-oriented programming is discussed only
once students have developed a basic understanding of Java
programming. Previous editions have established the text's
reputation as an excellent choice for two-course sequences in
introductory computer science, and new material in the 4th Edition
incorporates concepts related to Java 8, functional programming,
and image manipulation.
This book discusses the pervasiveness of violence against women
(VAW) in India and traces its evolution as a public health concern.
It highlights the fundamental relationship between health and
violence and identifies institutional gaps, which hinder
comprehensive healthcare and support to VAW survivors. The volume
brings together in-depth case studies from various states and civil
society organisations on their initiatives to help bring adequate
support and health services to women affected by VAW. These include
engagement with hospitals to increase awareness and sensitivity
among health service providers and community-run health clinics for
marginalised women. The book documents the mobilising efforts of
feminists, community-based organisations, state institutions, and
CSOs in developing comprehensive healthcare responses and bringing
violence against women into the public health discourse. It
provides insights into the lack of guidelines for responding to
sexual violence in medical and nursing education, and the way that
the police and the justice system function in India. This book will
be of interest to public health professionals, and students and
researchers in public health, gender studies, social work, and
sociology. It will also be useful for policymakers and for
professionals working for thinktanks or CSOs working on developing
health system responses to VAW.
This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the application level
for various agricultural biotechnologies across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The authors examine the capacity available as well as the enabling
environment, including policy and investments, for facilitating
agricultural biotechnology development and use in the region. For
each Sub-Saharan country, the status of biotechnology application
is assessed in four major sectors; Crops, Livestock, Forestry and
Aquaculture. Examples such as the number and requisite skill levels
of trained personnel, biosafety frameworks and public awareness are
surfaced in these chapters. This work also discusses the impact of
push-pull factors on research, training and food security and
identifies opportunities for investment in biotechnology and local
agribusiness. Development partners, policy makers, agricultural
consultants as well as scientists and private sector investors with
an interest in biotechnology initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa will
find this collection an important account to identify key gaps in
capacity and policy, as well as priority areas going forward. The
volume highlights ways to develop technology and increase
agricultural production capacity through international cooperation
and inclusive economic growth, making it a valuable practice guide
in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular
SDG 2 Zero Hunger and SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth. Clear
case studies round off the reading experience.
This book documents the journey of the survivors of sexual violence
as they navigate the gruelling criminal justice and health care
systems and the stigma and hostility in their communities in the
aftermath of the incident. Through personal narratives of survivors
and their family members, the book examines critical gaps in the
existing networks of criminal procedure, health, and rehabilitation
for survivors of sexual violence and rape. Using qualitative
research, it distills the narratives gathered through interviews
with survivors and their family members to understand their
experiences and offers. The book contributes to the corpus of
literature on different forms of violence against women in India
with an emphasis on understanding the effectiveness of
institutions, both formal and informal, in responding to sexual
violence, and offering suggestions for changes in the health and
support systems available to them. It documents post-incident
interactions of survivors with family, community, the police,
courts, lawyers, and hospitals and highlights the impact of rape on
physical and mental health, work, relationships, education and
housing for survivors and their families. This book will be of
interest to those engaged in providing support to survivors of
sexual violence as well as students and researchers of social work
and social policy, health and social care, law, gender studies,
human rights and civil liberties, gender and sexuality, social
welfare, and mental health.

This specially curated collection features four reviews of current
and key research on heat stress in dairy cattle. The first chapter
outlines technologies to breed for more heat tolerant dairy cattle,
exploiting either between or within breed genetic variation in the
trait. It discusses future perspectives on the use of different
tools to achieve accelerated improvements of this important trait.
The second chapter discusses breeding goals and multi-trait
selection to balance production and non-production traits. It
considers newer breeding objectives such as ensuring that cattle
can adapt to a changing climate, including breeding for heat
tolerance. The third chapter reviews challenges facing smallholder
dairy farmers in Asia. These include the impact of high
temperatures and humidity on milk yield, reproductive efficiency
and animal health. The chapter places these challenges in the
context of the broader economic constraints faced by smallholders
and how they can be overcome. The final chapter highlights
constraints in improving smallholder dairy production in
Sub-Saharan Africa. Issues include developing breeds balancing
yield with resilience to local climatic conditions. The chapter
reviews ways of Improving breeding and productivity, as well as
broader organisational support

Colonial Karma tracks the Indian English novel from its colonial
origins to the present, each chapter focusing on a particular
historical moment. Linking the novel's development with that of
Indian cultural nationalism, it argues that nationalism seeks to
solve the problem of action for its middle class subject by
redefining the Bhagavad Gita's concept of karma for political
purposes. Two figures serve to exemplify this problem: Arjuna in
the Bhagavad Gita and Saleem in Midnight's Children. After
considering influential early novels in Indian languages, Colonial
Karma discusses novels in English by Narayan, Anand, Rao, Anita
Desai, Salman Rushdie, Shashi Deshpande and Githa Hariharan. MARKET

Mainstream counselling in domestic violence often fails to address
critical issues, such as gender socialisation processes and the
abuse of power that allows violence against women, and focuses
primarily on the intra-psychic nature of individual women. In
contrast, feminist counselling is an effective alternative model,
owing to its ability to address the fundamental correlation of
abuse with power. In going beyond the individual, it helps women
locate the source of their distress in the larger social context of
power and control, manifesting in intimate, interpersonal
relationships, and enables them to resist systemic oppression. This
volume offers one of the first systematic documentations of
feminist psychosocial interventions in India. It situates the issue
of domestic violence in the historical context of the women's
movement, and examines institutional factors such as family and
marriage that perpetuate abuse. Using extensive case studies, it
discusses the methods, principles, techniques, skills and
procedures followed by feminist organisations across the country,
and their role in women's empowerment. The book will serve as a
practical reference guide to practitioners such as social workers,
counsellors and para-counsellors, health activists, grassroots
workers, protection officers and service providers. It will also be
useful to scholars and students of psychology, sociology, women's
studies, law and public policy.

The accurate interpretation of infrared spectra of organic structures is an extremely important tool for the analytical chemist. Using up-to-date source material, this volume presents a compilation of the infrared absorption regions of ninety of the most important organic molecular fragments. This highly practical guide introduces the reader to a straightforward technique for determining all the fundamental vibrations of a molecular fragment. The set of normal vibrations and the infrared absorption regions of ninety molecular fragments are then discussed and tabulated. The discussion of each fragment is accompanied by a large number of references. A Guide to the Complete Interpretation of Infrared Spectra of Organic Structures offers the analytical chemist the possibility of a more profound interpretation of infrared spectra. In addition, it assumes only a basic knowledge of infrared spectra, and so will prove very useful for non-specialists who use infrared spectroscopy in analysis.
This title was first published in 2003. India's tax revenues depend
on manufacturing while agriculture and services generate
employment. WTO's Uruguay and Doha rounds imply large tariff cuts.
This affects the competitiveness of the Indian manufacturing sector
and has implications for government deficits. Excessive dependence
on indirect taxes and subsidies to regulate markets introduces
distortions and is incompatible with free market principles. The
book analyses welfare implications of fiscal and trade policies for
India. To put the results in perspective, developments in trade
theory, public finance and Computable General Equilibrium (CGE)
modelling are covered. Theoretical results are juxtaposed with
empirical findings from these models. Methodology to construct CGE
models is also covered. The trade model covers tariff cuts under
various assumptions besides incorporating "new trade theory". As
tax reforms and tariff cuts are independent, past tax reforms like
MODVAT (MODified VAT) and proposed reforms like VAT,
elimination/reduction of subsidies are covered using a separate tax
model.
