Indocti discant, et ament meminisse periti 1. Die Idee der Riemannschen Flache wird in der Funktionentheorie mehrerer komplexer Veranderlichen erst seit Beginn der 50er Jahre konsequent verwendet. Wie in der Funktionentheorie einer Verander- lichen muB man die Gebilde untersuchen, die durch groBtmogliche analytische Fortsetzung von holomorphen Funktionen entstehen. Die gleichen Griinde wie in der klassischen Funktionentheorie machen es notwendig, die Verzweigungspunkte hinzuzunehmen. Das fiihrte jedoch auf begriffiiche Schwierigkeiten, die 1933 H. Behnke und P. Thullen in ihrem Ergebnisbericht sogar veranlaBten, diese Punkte vorerst von der Betrachtung auszuschlieBen. Eine zufriedenstellende Definition des Ver- zweigungsbegriffs wurde erst 1951 von H. Behnke und K. Stein (Math. Ann. 124) gegeben. Die von ihnen eingefiihrten komplex n Riiume um- fassen insbesondere die analytischen Gebilde holomorpher Funktiollen mehrerer Veranderlicher, d. h. die hOherdimensionalen Riemannschen Flachen. Dabei stellte sich heraus, daB diese Riemannschen Gebilde - anders als in der klassischen Funktionentheorie - Punkte ohne lokale Uniformisierende besitzen konnen. Solche Punkte wurden fort an singu- lare Punkte genannt.

Der klassische Satz von Mittag-LeIDer, nach dem in jedem Gebiete der GauB- schen Zahlenebene ce meromorphe Funktionen mit vorgegebenen Hauptteilen konstruiert werden konnen, wurde bereits 1895 von P. Cousin auf den Fall von mehreren komplexen Veranderlichen iibertragen. Allerdings konnten Cousin und nachfolgende Autoren den analogen Satz nur fUr spezielle Gebiete, namlich Zylindergebiete des m-dimensionalen komplexen Zahlenraumes cern, beweisen. m Es zeigte sich, daB keineswegs in allen Gebieten des ce, 2 S; m

Felix Hausdorff gehort zu den herausragenden Mathematikern der ersten Halfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Eine Gesamtausgabe seiner Werke galt lange als Desideratum. Die auf 8 Bande veranschlagte Edition wird Hausdorffs gesamtes publiziertes Opus enthalten, ferner eine Reihe bemerkenswerter Stucke aus dem umfangreichen wissenschaftlichen Nachlass. Alle Texte werden von Fachleuten auf den einzelnen Gebieten sorgfaltig kommentiert; an dieser Arbeit sind mehr als 20 Mathematiker, Mathematikhistoriker, Astronomen, Philosophen und Literaturwissenschaftler aus vier Staaten beteiligt. Der vorliegende Band IV enthalt Hausdorffs Arbeiten zur Analysis, Algebra und Zahlentheorie, darunter die klassischen auch heute noch vielzitierten Texte zu Hausdorff-Mass und Hausdorff-Dimension und zum Hausdorffschen Kugelparadoxon. Aus dem Nachlass werden 19 Faszikel publiziert, ferner einige interessante Briefe.

Die Autoren beginnen mit der Primfaktorzerlegung und dem grossten gemeinsamen Teiler - Begriffen, die aus dem Schulunterricht bekannt sind, aber bei genauerer Betrachtung viel von ihrer Selbstverstandlichkeit verlieren. Sie erortern das Dezimalsystem, die Kongruenzrechnung, primitive Wurzeln und das Reziprozitatsgesetz fur quadratische Reste. Ihr ausfuhrliches Buch richtet sich an Dozenten, Lehrer und Studenten und ist aber fur alle verstandlich, die den elementaren Schulstoff beherrschen. Es eignet sich zur Vorlesungsbegleitung und zum Selbststudium. Aufgaben am Ende eines jeden Paragraphen helfen dabei, den Lehrstoff zu uben und zu vertiefen."

Diese dritte Auflage wurde zusammen mit dem zweitgenannten Autor kritisch durchgesehen, erganzt und verbessert. Ein weiteres Kapitel uber geometrische Funktionentheorie und schlichte Funktionen enthalt einen Beweis der Bieberbachschen Vermutung.
