Fighting sports and church may seem an unusual combination yet modern ministries have embraced them as means for evangelism and social outreach. While news media often sensationalize fighting sports ministries, churches see them as a way to appeal to male congregants, presenting a peace-loving yet tough model of discipleship--an image reflected in popular culture. From martial arts programs at suburban churches to urban boxing ministries geared towards at-risk youth, this aook examines the substantial history of church sponsored combat sports, and presents arguments by Christian ethicists about whether and how they are compatible with church teachings and settings. Interviews with boxing and martial arts ministry leaders describe their programs and the relationship between fight sports and faith.
Over the last twenty-five years, Stephen Resnick and Richard Wolff have developed a groundbreaking interpretation of Marxian theory generally and of Marxian economics in particular. This book brings together their key contributions and underscores their different interpretations. In facing and trying to resolve contradictions and lapses within Marxism, the authors have confronted the basic incompatibilities among the dominant modern versions of Marxian theory, and the fact that Marxism seemed cut off from the criticisms of determinist modes of thought offered by post-structuralism and post-modernism and even by some of Marxisma (TM)s greatest theorists.

While most mainstream commentators view the crisis that provoked the Great Recession as having passed, these essays from Richard Wolff paint a far less rosy picture. Drawing attention to the extreme downturn in most of capitalism's old centres, the unequal growth in its new centres and the resurgence of a global speculative bubble, Wolff - in his uniquely accessible style - makes the case that the crisis should be grasped not as a passing moment, but as an evolving stage in capitalism's history.
The world is undergoing vast social, economic and political transformations. From the Arab Spring to the Occupy movement, it is clear that people are seeking out new forms of democracy. A new historical vista is opening before us. Democracy at Work is a manifesto for this time, calling for a democratic alternative based on workers directing their own workplaces. Written by America's leading socialist economist, Richard Wolff, the book offers an alternative viewpoint to the views of mainstream economists and pundits.
Americans have fallen in love with Spanish food in recent years,
and no one has done more to play matchmaker than the award-winning
chef Jose Andres.
Each show depicts the church and its leaders and compares it to actual church history. Sister Bertrille, Father Dowling, and Reverend Camden - these three characters span the history of television's depiction of church leaders, from "The Flying Nun (1967-1970)" to "The Father Dowling Mysteries (1989-1990)" and "7th Heaven (1996-2007)". Each exemplifies one of three trends in television's chronicle of the church, from shows of the 1960s-70s that focus on internal conflicts in the church, to those of the 1980s and early 1990s that illustrate the church's struggle for relevance in the modern world, and finally those of the 1990s through today that portray the church in the family context. Along the way, the book discusses the programs' depiction of various issues facing the church of their times, including: the role of women in the church; clerics reconsidering their call; the sexuality of clerics; the ecumenical movement; and the church's response to abortion, homosexuality, racial injustice and illegal immigration. "The Church on TV" looks at American broadcast network programs that focused regularly and principally on church leaders. It takes a historical-critical approach, discussing seventeen programs in-depth and looking not only at how each depicted the church and its leaders but also comparing this depiction to actual church history. What trends emerged? Why? How accurate was the portrayal? What does the depiction say about American popular culture and its view of religion in American society? It's these probing questions and answers that bring the current research up to date.
Everyone's Poetry Book A book that shows every poetry lover that modern poetry can be understandable Why should the lover of the beauty of language put up with unintelligibility in his own native tongue? Why should the reader of poetry face exile in searching for the best words in their best order? In reading Richard Wolff, you will see that "only the lover of language, someone on intimate terms with her impervious ways, can begin to know what 'the best words' and the 'best order' may be." -John McCabe. You'll thus note that Richard Wolff prides himself on his clarity, concreteness, and adherence to the discipline of poetic structure-virtues much ignored in current literary circles. At their best moments, the results of the poems of this collection "create impressions of a voice of startling spontaneity." In Richard Wolff's pages, "Though we cannot always decipher why or how it happens, we rely on poetry to increase our knowledge of ourselves and to confirm us in the truth of our experience." .,."there courses through these poems one primary passion that serves to bind together and direct all the others: the poet's passion for Beauty." If therefore you can reach for only one book of modern poetry from your bookshelf, reach for Everyone's Poetry Book. In it you will find reward and fulfillment. Mr. Wolff spent most of his adult working life serving our nation in federal publishing, managing four Department of Defense printing plants in a 14 state Midwestern area. He and his wife, Nancy, live in northeast Illinois in Lindenhurst, close to the Illinois/Wisconsin border and have 17 natural born children: 12 girls and 5 boys.
"Re/presenting Class" is a collection of essays that develops a
poststructuralist Marxian conception of class in order to theorize
the complex contemporary economic terrain. Both building upon and

their groundbreaking work "Knowledge and Class, " contributors aim

as a central theme in economic analysis. Suggesting the possibility
of a new politics of the economy, the collection as a whole focuses

Fifty years after World War II, a small group of Americans launched a campaign to confront the world with the fact that many assets looted by the Nazis had never been returned to their owners. Backed by class-action lawsuits and threats of economic sanctions, they mounted a vigorous challenge against some of the world's largest corporations and governments to demand billions of dollars. But what began as a moral crusade soon became a bare-knuckle battle that opened up painful debates about whether money can ever compensate for the horrors of the Holocaust. John Authers and Richard Wolffe offer a spellbinding investigative account of this momentous international struggle. The Victim's Fortune captures the personalities, ruthless tactics, and moral dilemmas surrounding the fight over compensation -- all unfolding against the backdrop of one of the darkest moments in human history.
