The Accomplisht Cook was first published in 1660 and this is a
facsimile of the 1685 edition. Robert May was cook to the
aristocracy of Royalist England; born in the year of the Armada;
trained by his own father, then by powerful patrons in Paris;
before apprenticeship in London with the cook to the Star Chamber.
In the course of a long life, working almost exclusively for fellow
Catholics and Royalists, he absorbed all the most fashionable
tendencies at large in the kitchens of England. 'By its sheer size
and comprehensive scope Robert May's book eclipsed its
predecessors,' writes Alan Davidson in his foreword. Here is the
most complete portrait of English cooking as it was when Charles II
was restored to the throne, as well as before 'the unhappy and
cruel disturbances' of the Civil War, in 'those golden days of
peace and hospitality,' as the author puts it, 'when you enjoyed
your own.' This edition has an excellent biographical introduction
by Marcus Bell, revealing new facts about Robert May's life, a
graceful foreword by Alan Davidson and a full glossary of
contemporary terms. This new reprint of Prospect's edition of 2000
is part of the series 'The English Kitchen' and sits alongside and
in similar format to other works, ancient and modern, on the
history of English cookery.
"In turbulent times, the ability to communicate with power and
purpose becomes a crucial leadership competency. Smart executives
realize that leadership communication isn't a matter of ""making
nice,"" but a strategic necessity.
Organized around an original model defining the important
communication roles a leader must fill, The Leader as Communicator
examines roles as diverse as trust-builder and critic, renewal
champion and navigator, learning advocate and provocateur. The book
presents case studies of organizations including Cadillac, Emerson,
and Saturn, plus dozens of other examples. Packed with strategies
and tactics showing how leaders can shape the communications
climate of their organizations, the book culminates with assessment
exercises that let readers measure their own communication skills.
This insightful book demonstrates how to become a stronger, more
confident leader -- one who can use communication to build
alignment, enthusiasm, and productivity."
The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the
main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This
branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is
concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of
linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into
the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high
quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues.
The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from
syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to
studies of the lexicon. To discuss your book idea or submit a

. . . a welcome addition . . . "Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in
a College Context" is a concise, erudite, and useful introduction
to this emerging specialty. "Contemporary Psychology"
An excellent addition to the sparse literature on psychotherapy
in college settings. This well-written collection demonstrates the
applicability and usefulness of brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy
in college settings. It also usefully presents important
information about some of the most difficult and demanding
disorders treated in academic settings (e.g., eating and
narcissistic character disorders). Choice
In one of the few professional books to consider psychotherapy
with college students as a particular specialty, Robert May invited
senior, experienced college psychotherapists to examine the unique
and typical characteristics of therapy with young adults in
college. From organizational and administrative aspects to specific
clinical techniques, "Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in a College
Context" offers college counselors, clinical psychologists,
psychiatrists, and psychoanalysts all the information needed for
effective, sound treatment.

Traditionally the province of chemists, the problem of
environmental pollution is increasingly being tackled using
methodologies which have a biological basis. This 1998 volume
provides a range of examples of how biotechnology can offer
sensitive and ecologically relevant new ways of monitoring the
presence of biohazards in our environment and, once detected, how
these biohazards can be removed in an ecologically safe way through
bioremediation. Additional chapters on economic, legislative and
policy aspects set the topic in its social context, resulting in a
broad-ranging volume of value to all those concerned with the
science of ecologically effective environmental protection and
management.

free from any of the overtones that often constrain professional
fisheries meetings. The present volume is the result. This volume
aims to be useful as an appraisal of the state of the art by a
mixed collection of insiders and outsiders. Most interestingly, I
think, it aims (especially in the four group reports) to identify
some of the major areas of unresolved controversy and some of the
major questions yet unanswered. I see the book as essentially a
tentative statement - often by several dissonant voices - about
directions in which we may be heading; the book is emphatically not
a canonical utterance on how to do things. It is intended to
stimulate, not to codify. Following the usual Dahlem Workshop
format, the discussions were organized under four themes. Although
crisp demarcation is not possible, the first two themes broadly
deal with biological aspects of the dynamics of single populations
and the dynamics of systems with many species. The later two themes
take up questions of management under uncertainty and multispecies
management. In all this, the word "fish" is interpreted broadly to
include such taxonomically varied beasts as whales, shrimp, crabs,
shellfish, and squid, along with fish in a strictly zoological
sense.
Science and Government is a gripping account of one of the great
scientific rivalries of the twentieth century. The antagonists are
Sir Henry Tizard, a chemist from Imperial College, and Frederick
Lindemann (Lord Cherwell), a physicist from the University of
Oxford. The scientist-turned-novelist Charles Percy Snow tells a
story of hatred and ambition at the top of British science,
exposing how vital decisions were made in secret and sometimes with
little regard to truth or the prevailing scientific consensus.
Tizard, an adviser to a Labor government, believed the air war
against Nazi Germany would be won by investing in the new science
of radar. Lindemann favored bombing the homes of German citizens.
Each man produced data to support his case, but in the end what
mattered was politics. When Labor was in power, Tizard's view
prevailed. When the Conservatives returned, Lindemann, who was
Winston Churchill's personal adviser, became untouchable. Snow's
1959 "Two Cultures" Rede Lecture propelled him to worldwide fame.
Science and Government, originally the 1960 Godkin Lectures at
Harvard, has been largely forgotten. Today the space occupied by
scientists and politicians is much more contested than it was in
Snow's time, but there remains no better guide to it than Snow's
dramatic narrative. C. P. Snow (1905-1980) held several positions
in the British Civil Service and was the author of many fiction and
nonfiction books, most notably The Two Cultures and the Scientific
Revolution.
Robert May's seminal book has played a central role in the
development of ecological science. Originally published in 1976,
this influential text has overseen the transition of ecology from
an observational and descriptive subject to one with a solid
conceptual core. Indeed, it is a testament to its influence that a
great deal of the novel material presented in the earlier editions
has now been incorporated into standard undergraduate textbooks. It
is now a quarter of a century since the publication of the second
edition, and a thorough revision is timely.
Theoretical Ecology provides a succinct, up-to-date overview of
the field set in the context of applications, thereby bridging the
traditional division of theory and practice. It describes the
recent advances in our understanding of how interacting populations
of plants and animals change over time and space, in response to
natural or human-created disturbance. In an integrated way, initial
chapters give an account of the basic principles governing the
structure, function, and temporal and spatial dynamics of
populations and communities of plants and animals. Later chapters
outline applications of these ideas to practical issues including
fisheries, infectious diseases, tomorrow's food supplies, climate
change, and conservation biology. Throughout the book, emphasis is
placed on questions which as yet remain unanswered.
The editors have invited the top scientists in the field to
collaborate with the next generation of theoretical ecologists. The
result is an accessible, advanced textbook suitable for senior
undergraduate and graduate level students as well as researchers in
the fields of ecology, mathematical biology, environmental and
resources management. It will also be of interest to the general
reader seeking a better understanding of a range of global
environmental problems.
