This book engages a key question facing governments and similar
institutions in countries of immigration or emigration: how should
these governments and institutions communicate with immigrants so
that they will listen to and act on their messages? Drawing on
original research with Mexican emigrants in New York and the
Mexican government's Seguro Popular health care program, the
authors examine the ways in which governments integrate migrants
into diasporic political, medical, educational, and other systems,
and how migrant-sending countries communicate with their emigrants
abroad. In analyzing how these efforts fail or succeed, this book
presents strategies and policy recommendations that many
governments and institutions can use to engage their citizens or
clients ethically and effectively. Offering a valuable approach to
the study of race, migration, and public policy, this book will be
of key importance to researchers and graduate students in public
health, sociology, marketing and business, political science,
Latinx studies, and international communication.
This dynamic and comprehensive text from nationally renowned
scholars continues to demonstrate the profound influence African
Americans have had-and continue to have-on American politics. Using
two interrelated themes-the idea of universal freedom and the
concept of minority-majority coalitions-the text demonstrates how
the presence of Africans in the United States affected the founding
of the Republic and its political institutions and processes. The
authors show that through the quest for their own freedom in the
United States, African Americans have universalized and expanded
the freedoms of all Americans. New to the Ninth Edition * Updated
sections on intersectionality, dealing with issues of race and
gender. * Updated section on African American music, to include the
role of Hip Hop. * Updated sections on mass media coverage of
African Americans and the African American celebrity impact on
politics, adding new mention of the CROWN Act and the politics of
Black hair. * Updated section on the "Black Lives Matter" movement,
adding a new section on the "Me Too" movement. * Updated sections
on African Americans in Congress, with a new mention of the Squad.
* Updated voting behavior through the 2020 elections, connecting
the Obama years with the new administration. * A comparison of the
2016 and 2020 presidential elections. * A discussion of the way in
which race contributes to the polarization of American politics in
the 2020 presidential campaign. * An analysis of the racial
attitudes of President Trump, and the institutionally racist
policies of his administrations. * Updated chapter on state and
local politics, including a new section on state executive offices
and Black mayors. * Updated sections on material well-being
indicators, adding a new section on the coronavirus pandemic and
the Black community. * The first overall assessment of the Obama
administration in relation to domestic and foreign policy and
racial politics.
This book examines the illegal behaviour of entrepreneurs and
discusses how criminal entrepreneurs acquire information, learn
from their entrepreneurial experiences, and utilize acquired
knowledge to develop their organizations. The chapters demonstrate
several dimensions of the entrepreneurial processes, such as
imagination, innovation, calculated risk taking, alertness to
opportunities, opportunity identification, as well as resource
assemblage and leverage to exploit an opportunity - all in a
criminal context. Illegal methods used by entrepreneurs to identify
solutions to problems that lead to the generation of business
opportunities are illustrated. Moreover, methods used by criminal
entrepreneurs to circumvent barriers to the entrepreneurial process
and business developments are highlighted. Issues relating to the
formation of crimino-entrepreneurial ventures are critically
discussed. Emerging issues relating to illegal corporate
entrepreneurship are illustrated.
In A Dockyard Apprentice's Story, Robert Smith ('Nige' to his
mates) told of his formative years as a young trainee in Chatham
Dockyard, where he trained as an engine fitter and turner. The
Technical Progressman is set in the 1960s, taking up the story from
the point where Bob transfers to the Weapons Section as a Technical
Progressman. It is the second part of a trilogy covering the whole
of Robert's working life with the Ministry of Defence. Far from
being a dry catalogue of working experiences, the story is packed
with amusing and offbeat anecdotes - as befits a young man growing
up in the decade of pop groups, mini skirts and flower power.

Modern Labor Economics: Theory and Public Policy, now in its
fourteenth edition, continues to be the leading text for
one-semester courses in labor economics at the undergraduate and
graduate levels. It offers a thorough overview of the modern theory
of labor market behavior and reveals how this theory is used to
analyze public policy. Designed for students who may not have
extensive backgrounds in economics, the text balances theoretical
coverage with examples of practical applications that allow
students to see concepts in action. The authors believe that
showing students the social implications of the concepts discussed
in the course will enhance their motivation to learn. Consequently,
this text presents numerous examples of policy decisions that have
been affected by the ever-shifting labor market. This new edition
continues to offer the following: a balance of relevant,
contemporary examples coverage of the current economic climate an
introduction to basic methodological techniques and problems tools
for review and further study This fourteenth edition presents
updated data throughout and a wealth of new examples, such as the
impact of COVID-19 lockdowns, gig work, nudges, monopsony power in
the technology industry, and the effect of machine learning on
inequality. Supplementary materials for students and instructors
are available on the book's companion website.
The authors of this book ask how digital research tools are
changing the ways in which practicing editors historicize
Shakespeare's language. Scholars now encounter, interpret, and
disseminate Shakespeare's language through an increasing variety of
digital resources, including online editions such as the Internet
Shakespeare Editions (ISE), searchable lexical corpora such as the
Early English Books Online-Text Creation Partnership (EEBO-TCP) or
the Lexicons of Early Modern English (LEME) collections,
high-quality digital facsimiles such as the Folger Shakespeare
Library's Digital Image Collection, text visualization tools such
as Voyant, apps for reading and editing on mobile devices, and
more. What new insights do these tools offer about the ways
Shakespeare's words made meaning in their own time? What kinds of
historical or historicizing arguments can digital editions make
about Shakespeare's language? A growing body of work in the digital
humanities allows textual critics to explore new approaches to
editing in digital environments, and enables language historians to
ask and answer new questions about Shakespeare's words. The authors
in this unique book explicitly bring together the two fields of
textual criticism and language history in an exploration of the
ways in which new tools are expanding our understanding of Early
Modern English.

What happened when Sesame Street and Big Brother were adapted for
African audiences? Or when video games Final Fantasy and Assassins'
Creed were localized for the Spanish market? Or when Sherlock
Holmes was transformed into a talking dog for the Japanese
animation Sherlock Hound? Bringing together leading international
scholars working on localization in television, film and video
games, Media Across Borders is a pioneering study of the myriad
ways in which media content is adapted for different markets and
across cultural borders. Contributors examine significant
localization trends and practices such as: audiovisual translation
and transcreation, dubbing and subtitling, international
franchising, film remakes, TV format adaptation and video game
localization. Drawing together insights from across the audiovisual
sector, this volume provides a number of innovative models for
interrogating the international flow of media. By paying specific
attention to the diverse ways in which cultural products are
adapted across markets, this collection offers important new
perspectives and theoretical frameworks for studying localization
processes in the audiovisual sector. For further resources, please
see the Media Across Borders group website
(www.mediaacrossborders.com), which hosts a 'localization'
bibliography; links to relevant companies, institutions and
publications, as well as conference papers and workshop summaries.
Entrepreneurship in Policing and Criminal Contexts explores the
contemporary and under researched themes of 'entrepreneurial
policing' and 'entrepreneurialism in criminal justice contexts'
which are emerging topics of both theoretical and practical
interest in the current rapidly changing criminal justice
environment. This volume of Contemporary Issues in Entrepreneurship
Research critically opens up a new area of policing research,
innovatively using theories of entrepreneurship, management and
leadership, to illuminate a novel aspect of policing. Moreover, it
presents a scholarly discussion about concepts and theories
underpinning the topic. It is evident from readings that there are
numerous crossovers in the literatures of entrepreneurship and
policing because innovation, transformation and change are integral
facets of both phenomena. This timely contribution spans theories
of criminology, entrepreneurship and policing and as such is a
seminal work which will engage practitioners, scholars and students
of entrepreneurship and policing in thinking differently about how
entrepreneurship can help change traditional thinking in relation
to policing and criminal contexts.

Montreal in 15 Chapters is a compilation of stories taking place in
Montreal, from the story of a translator in the Quebec government
to the wanderings of a homeless person on the streets. Some of the
spots mentioned now only exist in our memories, such as the
Hawaiian Lounge, which was a bar for cross-dressers, or Parthenais
Prison. Robert Markland Smith loves describing offbeat characters
in off-the-wall unusual settings and situations. Sometimes the main
character is a woman, as in Peace that Passeth all Understanding.
Mr Smith has been writing since 1965 because he loves reading so
much that he wants to give this pleasure to other people.
In his first book, A Dockyard Apprentice's Story, Robert Smith
('Nige' to his mates) told of his formative years as a young
trainee in Chatham Dockyard, where he trained as an engine fitter
and turner. The Technical Progressman was set in the 1960s, taking
up the story from the point where Bob transferred to the Weapons
Section as a Technical Progressman. Now Bob has added a third and
final part, about his post-Dockyard adventures working with the
Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), and in posts with the MoD and
Government agencies, and published the whole story in one volume.
The full story of his career is packed with interesting stories,
and Bob's sense of humour shines through.
The apprenticeship at Chatham Dockyard is the finest in the world -
if you stick to it, the world's your oyster' Robert Smith's dad
told his teenage son. When young Robert started there in 1958, the
docks employed 6000 people on a two-mile- long site encompassing
hundreds of workshops, offices and storehouses as well as its own
police station, fire service, medical centre, technical college and
telephone exchange. There were three ship-refitting basins and
eight main docks. Yet less than 30 years later Chatham Dockyard had
effectively closed, with catastrophic consequences to the local
economy. Robert did stick to his apprenticeship, and he has never
regretted it. Along with the studying and the hard work there were
plenty of good times, with laughter and practical jokes, scrapes
with motorbikes and cars, encounters with extraordinary characters
and moments of excitement - and frustration - with the opposite
sex.
Considering a career in today's sophisticated trade and technical
work environments? This practical, easy-to-understand, and engaging
text will help you build a solid understanding of essential math
concepts and their real-world applications using step-by-step
examples and problems drawn from a variety of occupations. Now
updated with more than 1500 new exercises to introduce and
reinforce key skills, INTRODUCTORY TECHNICAL MATHEMATICS, Seventh
Edition, also features accurate, up-to-date information from the
field, including expanded coverage of topics such as estimation
usage, working with spreadsheets on tablets, and energy-efficient
electrical applications.
