Queer Lives across the Wall examines the everyday lives of queer
Berliners between 1945 and 1970, tracing private and public queer
life from the end of the Nazi regime through the gay and lesbian
liberation movements of the 1970s. Andrea Rottmann explores how
certain spaces – including homes, bars, streets, parks, and
prisons – facilitated and restricted queer lives in the
overwhelmingly conservative climate that characterized both German
postwar states. By examining both public and private urban spaces,
the book draws a complex picture of how queer lives were lived,
going beyond previous histories that focus on state surveillance
and the persecution of male homosexuality. With a theoretical
toolkit informed by feminist, queer, and spatial theories, the book
combines previously unknown sources from the archives of the
feminist and LGBTIQ* movements in police, Stasi, and prisoner
files. As an intersectional history of lesbian, trans, and gay male
lives in East and West Berlin, Queer Lives across the Wall
illuminates the entanglements of gender, sexuality, and class.
Belonging is a not a state that we achieve, but a struggle that we
wage. The struggle for belonging is more difficult if one is
returning to a homeland after many years abroad. In Pursuit of
Belonging is an ethnography of Turkish migrants' struggle for
understanding, intimacy and appreciation when they return from
Germany to their Turkish homeland. Drawing on an established
tradition of life story writing in anthropology, Rottmann conveys
the struggle to forge an ethical life by relating the experiences
of a second-generation German-Turkish woman named Leyla.
"
Reconsidering Canadian Curriculum Studies" invites us to ponder,
to pay attention, and to ask more of the curriculum studies we
conduct. It provokes readers to study their historical topographies
and their future lines of movement, while stretching their
understandings of contemporary circumstances either in Canada or
abroad. The chapters cover the different geocultural and
interdisciplinary territories of curriculum studies (life-writing
methodologies, phenomenology, anti-racist education, gender,
semiotic analysis, curriculum theorizing, cultural studies,
indigenous studies, place, and others). Both established and junior
scholars set forth a diverse and thought-provoking array of their
lived experiences inside and outside the institutional contexts of
public schooling, imagining how future Canadian curriculum scholars
might advance knowledge within the broader international field of
curriculum studies.
Comprised of chapters written by established Canadian curriculum
scholars as well as junior scholars and graduate students, this
collection of essays provoke readers to imagine the different ways
in which educational researchers can engage the narrative inquiry
within the broader field of curriculum studies.
Seeking to challenge negative perceptions within Japanese media and
politics on the future of the countryside, the contributors to this
book present a counterargument to the inevitable demise of rural
society. Contrary to the dominant argument, which holds
outmigration and demographic hyper-aging as primarily responsible
for rural decline, this book highlights the spatial dimension of
power differences behind uneven development in contemporary Japan.
Including many fi eldwork-based case studies, the chapters discuss
topics such as corporate farming, local energy systems and public
healthcare, examining the constraints and possibilities of rural
self-determination under the centripetal impact of forces located
both in and outside of the country. Focusing on asymmetries of
power to explore regional autonomy and heteronomy, it also examines
"peripheralization" and the "global countryside," two recent
theoretical contributions to the fi eld, as a common framework.
Japan's New Ruralities addresses the complexity of rural decline in
the context of debates on globalization and power differences. As
such, it will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology,
anthropology, human geography and politics, as well as Japanese
Studies.

A lavishly illustrated monograph that spans the entire career of
Gerhard Richter, one of the most celebrated contemporary artists
"Spans the contemporary German artist's six-decade career. . . .
[A] stirring exhibition in [its] own right."-New York Times "[A]
weighty catalogue... illuminat[es] some less-visited corners of
Richter's oeuvre."-New York Review of Books Over the course of his
acclaimed 60-year career, Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) has employed
both representation and abstraction as a means of reckoning with
the legacy, collective memory, and national sensibility of
post-Second World War Germany, in both broad and very personal
terms. This handsomely designed book features approximately 100 of
his key canvases, from photo paintings created in the early 1960s
to portraits and later large-scale abstract series, as well as
select works in glass. New essays by eminent scholars address a
variety of themes: Sheena Wagstaff evaluates the conceptual import
of the artist's technique; Benjamin H. D. Buchloh discusses the
poignant Birkenau paintings (2014); Peter Geimer explores the
artist's enduring interest in photographic imagery; Briony Fer
looks at Richter's family pictures against traditional painting
genres and conventions; Brinda Kumar investigates the artist's
engagement with landscape as a site of memory; Andre Rottmann
considers the impact of randomization and chance on Richter's
abstract works; and Hal Foster examines the glass and mirror works.
As this book demonstrates, Richter's rich and varied oeuvre is a
testament to the continued relevance of painting in contemporary
art. Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art/Distributed by

This open access book provides a comprehensive analysis of
Turkey’s response to Syrian mass migration from 2011 to 2020. It
examines internal and external dimensions of the refugee issue in
relation to Middle Eastern geopolitics as well as the salience of
controlling irregular migration to the European Union. The book
focuses on policies and discourses developed in the fields of
border management, reception, asylum and protection, and
integration of refugees with an emphasis on continuities, ruptures
and changes. One of its main goals is to compare differences in
policy practices across provinces in order to better capture ways
in which Syrian refugees claim agency, develop belonging and
experience integration in the context of cultural intimacy,
precarity and temporariness. By providing rich empirical evidence,
this book provides a valuable resource for students and scholars in
migration studies, political science, anthropology, sociology and
public administration disciplines as well as policy makers,
stakeholders and the general public.

There have been many books written about German forces fighting on
the Eastern Front. This is hardly surprising considering the
enormity of the campaign and the seemingly inexhaustible amount of
data and photographs available. Concord is pleased to release one
more title, authored by Gordon Rottman, focusing on this crucial
campaign in the East. This volume is all about the infantry at the
core of Germany's military exploits in the enormous expanse of
Russia. The opening text delves into the complexities of the
standard German infantry division. Though usually short on
motorized transport, these self-contained combined-arms units
fought extremely effectively, penetrating almost to the gates of
Moscow. The introduction includes a detailed table of organization
listing all major and minor subunits (usefully provided in both
English and German). It then proceeds with an annotated description
of key divisional components, which is very helpful in
understanding how a division is equipped. As is par for this series
of books, the collection of black and white photos forms the
centerpiece. These photos show infantrymen from the early days of
the conflict through to much later periods. Members of many
branches are on display, for example, artillery, assault pioneers,
military police, antitank, reconnaissance and infantry. The photos
reveal a host of interesting details and show weapon systems found
in the infanterie division. This book also features a set of four
color plates expertly illustrated by Stephen Andrew. These depict
infantrymen and panzer grenadiers in a wide range of uniforms
fighting in various seasons and regions. Photo and color plate
captions are well detailed and thorough, providing a wealth of
information. This is a very helpful book for those wishing to learn
more about those soldiers at the"coal face" of Germany's
extraordinarily grueling campaign in the East.

Visualizing Hidden Structures in Art and Society In her artistic
practice, Andrea Buttner combines art history with social and
ethical issues. Since the early 2000s, she has been exploring a
wide range of themes such as work, poverty, shame and care in
monastic forms of coexistence, but also arts and crafts as a
political field. Examining the ambivalent tension between
aesthetics and ethics, the internationally renowned artist uses
various conceptual methods. Best known for her large-scale
woodcuts, Buttner has since used a variety of media, including
etching, painting, photography and video installations, glass art
and textiles. For her publications and exhibitions, Buttner
composes her works thematically to create site-specific
installations that can be experienced as gradually unfolding
narratives.
internationalen Bodenseeregion identifiziert. Die Sichtweisen der
entsprechenden Schulleiter und Experten der Schulentwicklung wurden
in Leitfadeninterviews erhoben und analysiert. In diesem Beitrag
zur UEbergangs-, Schulleiter- und Regionalforschung werden
unterschiedliche Schulleitertypen herausgearbeitet und daraus ein
heuristisches Modell sowie praxisrelevante und bildungspolitische
Empfehlungen abgeleitet.
