Recession, inflation, interest rates, income tax, exchange rates, junk bonds ... We are bombarded with these terms every day, but what do they actually mean? And how do they affect you? In this updated edition of Everyone's Guide to the South African Economy, all these issues - and more - are addressed. The book clearly explains and evaluates a wide range of economic occur rences - from the budget and the rand/dollar exchange rate to the balance of payments and the role of the South African Reserve Bank. The book investigates the impact of the 2008/2009 global financial crisis and the COVID pandemic, assesses the state of the sub-Saharan African economy, and explores human development issues in South Africa and their implications for policy-making. If you are baffled by the specialised jargon of economists and bankers and want to know more about the economic forces that subtly dictate your day-to-day existence, Everyone's Guide to the South African Economy will put you in the picture. This is essential reading for every South African consumer and taxpayer. Economics, after all, is too important to be left to economists.

Sociology will always remain a dynamic and living science due to its roots in the study of the human condition with reference to human action and interaction. Nursing sociology aims to understand society and how individuals function within it, within the health sector and specifically within the current nursing scenario, in order to provide holistic patient care. Nursing sociology is written from a multicultural perspective, reflecting on South Africa's diversity and explaining complex sociological ideas in a way that is easy to follow. In this 6th edition, substantial attention has been given to aspects of socialisation, social interaction, structure and relationships, social stratification, group dynamics, institutions, organisations and social problems encountered in nursing practice. Pertinent examples of the manifestation of sociology in the nursing profession and its practice as currently experienced in South Africa are also included. Activities allow students to debate issues arising from sociology in the nursing context in group format in order to promote creative thinking and comprehension. Nursing sociology provides students with a clear, easy-to-understand sociological text specifically oriented towards nursing, that emphasises specific aspects and creativity within the nursing environment.
Throughout the past 50 years, the courts have been a battleground for contesting political forces as more and more conflicts that were once fought in Parliament or in streets, or through strikes and media campaigns, find their way to the judiciary. Certainly, the legal system was used by both the apartheid state and its opponents. But it is in the post-apartheid era, and in particular under the rule of President Jacob Zuma, that we have witnessed a dramatic increase in ‘lawfare’: the migration of politics to the courts. The authors show through a series of case studies how just about every aspect of political life ends up in court: the arms deal, the demise of the Scorpions, the Cabinet reshuffle, the expulsion of the EFF from Parliament, the nuclear procurement process, the Cape Town mayor…

Featuring a silver-foil-embossed cloth cover, a ribbon marker and sprayed silver edges, this gorgeous volume is filled with beautiful illustrations and precise notes detailing the secret life of mermaids. In 1872, intrepid (fictional) explorer Darcy Delamare disguised herself as a man to claim a place on board the (real life) scientific expedition of the HMS Challenger. An unfortunate consequence of the restructuring of teacher education in South Africa over the past 15 years has been the virtual disappearance of history of education from tertiary programmes and a corresponding decline in the number of publications on the subject. But this is now changing; especially in postgraduate courses. A history of schooling in South Africa: method and context provides a perspective on the development of schooling for all of South Africa's diverse population groups, from pre-colonial times to present day, in as much detail as is possible in a single volume.
