Past, Present, and Future of Knowledge Acquisition This book contains the proceedings of the 11th European Workshop on Kno- edge Acquisition, Modeling, and Management (EKAW '99), held at Dagstuhl Castle (Germany) in May of 1999. This continuity and the high number of s- missions re?ect the mature status of the knowledge acquisition community. Knowledge Acquisition started as an attempt to solve the main bottleneck in developing expert systems (now called knowledge-based systems): Acquiring knowledgefromahumanexpert. Variousmethodsandtoolshavebeendeveloped to improve this process. These approaches signi?cantly reduced the cost of - veloping knowledge-based systems. However, these systems often only partially ful?lled the taskthey weredevelopedfor andmaintenanceremainedanunsolved problem. This required a paradigm shift that views the development process of knowledge-based systems as a modeling activity. Instead of simply transf- ring human knowledge into machine-readable code, building a knowledge-based system is now viewed as a modeling activity. A so-called knowledge model is constructed in interaction with users and experts. This model need not nec- sarily re?ect the already available human expertise. Instead it should provide a knowledgelevelcharacterizationof the knowledgethat is requiredby the system to solve the application task. Economy and quality in system development and maintainability are achieved by reusable problem-solving methods and onto- gies. The former describe the reasoning process of the knowledge-based system (i. e. , the algorithms it uses) and the latter describe the knowledge structures it uses (i. e. , the data structures). Both abstract from speci?c application and domain speci?c circumstances to enable knowledge reuse.
Neuere Entwicklungen im Datenbank- und Informationssystembereich sind u.a. gekennzeichnet durch die Bereitstellung sehr m{chtiger semantischer bzw. objektorientierter Datenmodelle, um den Anforderungen aus sogenannten Nicht-Standardanwendungen wie z.B. dem B}robereich gerecht zu werden. Daraus ergeben sich unmittelbar neue Problemstellungen imHinblick auf die Entwurfs- und Modellierungsaufgaben, die mit dem Einsatz derartiger m{chtiger Datenmodelle verbunden sind. Betrachtet manandererseits Entwicklungstendenzen im Bereich der K}nstlichen Intelligenz, so wird Fragen der systematischen Entwicklung Wissensbasierter Systeme eine immer gr- ere Wichtigkeit beigemessen. Dabei spielen u.a. Phasen-Systeme und damit verbunden der Aufbau geeigneter Modelle eine zentrale Rolle. Dementsprechend hat der 2. Workshop "Informationssysteme und K}nstliche Intelligenz" gerade das Gebiet der Modellierung als generelles Thema. Zielsetzung ist dabei, auf dem Gebiet derModellierung Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede von Problemstellungen bzw. L-sungsans{tzen, die in den Fachdisziplinen K}nstliche Intelligenz und Informationssysteme/Datenbanksysteme identifiziert bzw. entwickelt worden sind, herauszuarbeiten. Damit soll gleichzeitig der Gedankenaustausch zwischen den beteiligten Fachdisziplinen gef-rdertund die Zusammenarbeit }ber Fachdisziplinen hinweg verbessert werden.
This volume contains the papers presented at the International Scientific Symposium "Natural Language and Logic" held in Hamburg in May 1989. The aim of the papers is to present and discuss latest developments in the application of logic-based meth- ods for natural language understanding. Logic-based methods have gained in importance in the field of computational linguistics as well as for representing various types of knowledge in natural language understanding systems. The volume gives an overview of recent results achieved within the LILOG project (LInguistic and LOgic methods for understanding German texts) - one of the largest research projects in the field of text understanding - as well as within related natural language understanding systems.
Damit Softwareproduktionsumgebungen in grosseren Softwareentwicklungsprojekten wirkungsvoll eingesetzt werden konnen, mussen sie leistungsfahige Unterstutzungsfunktionen anbieten, die auf die Bedurfnisse der beteiligten Projektmitarbeiter ausgerichtet sind. In dieser Arbeit werden Konzepte fur eine verteilte wissensbasierte Softwareproduktionsumgebung, DIKOS (Distributed Knowledge-Based Software Engineering Environment), entwickelt, in deren Wissensbasis alle fur ein Softwareentwicklungsprojekt relevanten Informationen verwaltet werden. Dabei werden insbesondere Aspekte der Kooperation und Kommunikation der beteiligten Projektmitarbeiter betrachtet. Zur Beschreibung der in der DIKOS-Wissensbasis verwalteten Objekte sowie der zur Manipulation der Objekte definierten Funktionen werden "THM-Netze" eingefuhrt, die Konzepte semantischer Datenmodelle mit Pradikat-Transitions-Netzen vereinigen und zusatzlich uber Modellierungskonzepte zur Beschreibung von Zeitaspekten verfugen. Unter Verwendung von THM-Netzen wird ein Benutzerinformationssystem formal spezifiziert, das die Kooperation und Kommunikation zwischen den Projektmitarbeitern unterstutzt und teilweise automatisiert. Abschliessend wird die grundlegende Gestaltung der DIKOS-Benutzerschnittstelle beschrieben, wobei insbesondere die Dialogfunktionen des Benutzerinformationssystems betrachtet werden. Es wird ein abstraktes Dialogmodell eingefuhrt, das die streng formale Spezifikation interaktiver Benutzerschnittstellen ermoglicht."
