Real Price of War - How You Pay for the War on Terror (Hardcover, New): Joshua S Goldstein Real Price of War - How You Pay for the War on Terror (Hardcover, New)
Joshua S Goldstein
R2,637 Discovery Miles 26 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Are Americans in denial about the costs of the War on Terror? In The Real Price of War, Joshua S. Goldstein argues that we need to face up to what the war costs the average American--both in taxes and in changes to our way of life. Goldstein contends that in order to protect the United States from future attacks, we must fight--and win--the War on Terror. Yet even as President Bush campaigns on promises of national security, his administration is cutting taxes and increasing deficit spending, resulting in too little money to eradicate terrorism and a crippling burden of national debt for future generations to pay.

The Real Price of War breaks down billion-dollar government expenditures into the prices individual Americans are paying through their taxes. Goldstein estimates that the average American household currently pays $500 each month to finance war. Beyond the dollars and cents that finance military operations and increased security within the U.S., the War on Terror also costs America in less tangible ways, including lost lives, reduced revenue from international travelers, and budget pressures on local governments. The longer the war continues, the greater these costs. In order to win the war faster, Goldstein argues for an increase in war funding, at a cost of about $100 per household per month, to better fund military spending, homeland security, and foreign aid and diplomacy.

Americans have been told that the War on Terror is a war without sacrifice. But as Goldstein emphatically states: "These truths should be self-evident: The nation is at war. The war is expensive. Someone has to pay for it."

Adrenaline and the Inner World - An Introduction to Scientific Integrative Medicine (Hardcover): David S. Goldstein Adrenaline and the Inner World - An Introduction to Scientific Integrative Medicine (Hardcover)
David S. Goldstein
R2,092 Discovery Miles 20 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This accessible work is the first in more than seventy-five years to discuss the many roles of adrenaline in regulating the "inner world" of the body. David S. Goldstein, an international authority and award-winning teacher, introduces new concepts concerning the nature of stress and distress across the body's regulatory systems. Discussing how the body's stress systems are coordinated, and how stress, by means of adrenaline, may affect the development, manifestations, and outcomes of chronic diseases, Goldstein challenges researchers and clinicians to use scientific integrative medicine to develop new ways to treat, prevent, and palliate disease.

Goldstein explains why a former attorney general with Parkinson disease has a tendency to faint, why young astronauts in excellent physical shape cannot stand up when reexposed to Earth's gravity, why professional football players can collapse and die of heat shock during summer training camp, and why baseball players spit so much.

Adrenaline and the Inner World is designed to supplement academic coursework in psychology, psychiatry, endocrinology, cardiology, complementary and alternative medicine, physiology, and biochemistry. It includes an extensive glossary.

Bohmian Mechanics and Quantum Theory: An Appraisal (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): J.T. Cushing, Arthur Fine, S Goldstein Bohmian Mechanics and Quantum Theory: An Appraisal (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
J.T. Cushing, Arthur Fine, S Goldstein
R5,951 Discovery Miles 59 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

We are often told that quantum phenomena demand radical revisions of our scientific world view and that no physical theory describing well defined objects, such as particles described by their positions, evolving in a well defined way, let alone deterministically, can account for such phenomena. The great majority of physicists continue to subscribe to this view, despite the fact that just such a deterministic theory, accounting for all of the phe nomena of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, was proposed by David Bohm more than four decades ago and has arguably been around almost since the inception of quantum mechanics itself. Our purpose in asking colleagues to write the essays for this volume has not been to produce a Festschrift in honor of David Bohm (worthy an undertaking as that would have been) or to gather together a collection of papers simply stating uncritically Bohm's views on quantum mechanics. The central theme around which the essays in this volume are arranged is David Bohm's version of quantum mechanics. It has by now become fairly standard practice to refer to his theory as Bohmian mechanics and to the larger conceptual framework within which this is located as the causal quantum theory program. While it is true that one can have reservations about the appropriateness of these specific labels, both do elicit distinc tive images characteristic of the key concepts of these approaches and such terminology does serve effectively to contrast this class of theories with more standard formulations of quantum theory."

Judy Glickman Lauder: Beyond the Shadows - The Holocaust and the Danish Exception (Hardcover): Judy Glickman Lauder Judy Glickman Lauder: Beyond the Shadows - The Holocaust and the Danish Exception (Hardcover)
Judy Glickman Lauder; Text written by Michael Berenbaum, Judith S Goldstein, Elie Wiesel
R1,249 R1,073 Discovery Miles 10 730 Save R176 (14%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The extraordinary experiences of ordinary people-their suffering and their unimaginable bravery-are the subject of Judy Glickman Lauder's remarkable photographs. Beyond the Shadows responds to the world's looking the other way as the Nazis took power and their hate-fueled nationalism steadily turned to mass murder. In the context of the horror of the Holocaust, it also tells the uplifting story of how the citizens and leadership of Denmark, under occupation and at tremendous risk to themselves, defied the Third Reich to transport the country's Jews to safety in Sweden. Over the past thirty years, Glickman Lauder has captured the intensity of death camps in Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, in dark and expressive photographs, telling of a world turned upside down, and, in contrast, the redemptive and uplifting story of the "Danish exception." Including texts by Holocaust scholars Michael Berenbaum and Judith S. Goldstein, and a previously unpublished original text by survivor Elie Wiesel, Beyond the Shadows demonstrates passionately what hate can lead to, and what can be done to stand in its path. "This is photography and storytelling for our times, about what hate leads to, and how we can stand up to it. Beyond the Shadows is powerful and revealing, and sharply relevant to all of us who believe in the human family." - Sir Elton John

The late Toni Morrison was the first African-American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. A powerful writer, she wove stories depicting the largely overlooked Black experience in America and exploring the intersection of gender and race through the lives of Black women. Morrison's writing continues to move people and push readers to reassess their beliefs about what it means to be Black in America. Synthesizing some 250 scholarly works about Morrison's writing, this book examines eight novels as well as the short story "Recitatif." They are analyzed for techniques used to deepen meaning and emotional weight, and reveal Morrison's mastery over prose.

Teaching with Love - A Feminist Approach to Early Childhood Education (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Lisa S. Goldstein Teaching with Love - A Feminist Approach to Early Childhood Education (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Lisa S. Goldstein
R871 Discovery Miles 8 710 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Teachers commonly talk about loving their students, yet no effort has been made to explore the powerful educational potential inherent in these loving feelings. Teaching with Love breaks new ground by paying careful, scholarly attention to the nature, the scope, the dimensions, and the variety of teacherly love. In a highly readable narrative that builds on the feminist notion of an ethic of care and draws from the fields of psychology and women's studies, this book examines and analyzes the experiences of two primary grade teachers as they set about trying to create and enact a vision of early childhood education centered around loving relationships.

Lisa S. Goldstein
R4,822 Discovery Miles 48 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Using Developmentally Appropriate Practices To Teach The Common Core: Grades PreK-3 provides current and prospective primary grade teachers with an understanding of the CCSS-ELA and CCSS-M that highlights their compatibility with developmentally appropriate practices (DAP), the instructional approach generally preferred by teachers of young children.

The book begins by framing the CCSS as a distinct improvement over lengthy lists of academic content standards and as a carefully conceptualized and DAP-friendly set of curriculum guidelines. Next, the CCSS-ELA and CCSS-M for Grades K-3 are unpacked, analyzed, synthesized, and cross-referenced to key features of DAP. Finally, several "hot topic" issues differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring equitable access to the curriculum for English Language Learners, addressing assessment and accountability expectations, and educating parents and families about the CCSS and DAP are prioritized and examined in depth. "Using Developmentally Appropriate Practices To Teach The Common Core: Grades PreK-3 "is a highly useful guide for both pre-service and in-service early childhood education teachers."

Dr. Goldstein has authored more than 50 publications and co-edited two books. Her latest contribution to the field of nephrology, Mechanisms of Injury in Renal Disease and Toxicity, promotes an understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanisms mediating renal dysfunction in disease. It provides an important perspective in understanding mechanisms of chemically induced renal injury.
Over the past decade, understanding of the pathophysiologic and molecular basis of renal disease has grown tremendously. New and evolving concepts on the pathophysiology of glomerulonephritis, chronic glomerular injury, diabetic nephropathy, and acute renal failure are changing the clinical management of these disease states.

Reclaiming Caring in Teaching and Teacher Education (Paperback): Lisa S. Goldstein Reclaiming Caring in Teaching and Teacher Education (Paperback)
Lisa S. Goldstein
R808 R738 Discovery Miles 7 380 Save R70 (9%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Defining caring as a moral and intellectual relation, Reclaiming Caring in Teaching and Teacher Education positions caring as a crucial factor in the teaching-learning process and as a powerful professional stance for teachers. After presenting the findings of a study exploring preservice elementary teachers' initial beliefs and understandings of caring and examining the ways those preconceptions were challenged during the students' field placement period, Lisa S. Goldstein develops a model of teacher education that identifies commitment, community, and passion as the cornerstones of caring teaching. Rooted in the moral and intellectual relation view of caring, this model prepares teachers to build a strong foundation for their professional practices and to take advantage of the pedagogical power of caring in their work with children.

Gender roles are nowhere more prominent than in war. Yet contentious debates, and the scattering of scholarship across academic disciplines, have obscured understanding of how gender affects war and vice versa. In this authoritative and lively review of our state of knowledge, Joshua Goldstein assesses the possible explanations for the near-total exclusion of women from combat forces, through history and cross cultures. topics covered include the history of women who did fight and fought well, the complex role of testosterone in men's social behaviors, and the construction of masculinity and femininity in the shadow of war. Goldstein concludes that killing in war does not come naturally for either gender, and that gender norms often shape men, women, and children to the needs of the war system. Illustrated with photographs, drawings, and graphics, and drawing from scholarship spanning six academic disciplines, War and Gender translates and synthesizes our latest understanding of gender roles in war. Joshua Goldstein Professor of International Relations at the American University. He is the author of Three Way Street (University of Chicago Press, 1990), a best-selling textbook, International Relations 4/e (addison Wesley, 2001), and many articles on international relations. The National Science Foundation has funded some of his recent research. In addition, he is the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation grant, and awards from the International Studies Association and the American Jewish Congress. David S. Goldstein, Peter D Wallis
R4,059 Discovery Miles 40 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With classroom response systems (or CRSs, also known as Student Response Systems, Individual Response Systems, or, informally, "clickers") in use in higher education for some 20 years, there is now both ample research and a wealth of examples and ideas to draw on for faculty who are contemplating their use, or exploring new ways to integrate them in their teaching. The research demonstrates that, integrated purposefully in courses, the use of clickers aligns with what neuroscience tells us about the formation of memory and the development of learning. In addition, they elicit contributions from otherwise reticent students and enhance collaboration, even in large lecture courses; foster more honest responses to discussion prompts; increase students' engagement and satisfaction with the classroom environment; and provide an instantaneous method of formative assessment. This book presents a brief history of the development of CRSs and a survey of empirical research to provide a context for current best practices, and then presents seven chapters providing authentic, effective examples of the use of clickers across a wide range of academic disciplines, demonstrating how they can be effective in helping students to recognize their misconceptions and grasp fundamental concepts. Like all pedagogical interventions, classroom response systems are no panacea, and the experienced contributors candidly describe avoidable pitfalls while demonstrating how clickers can deepen student learning and how, by providing instantaneous feedback, they enable teachers to make adjustments on the fly to better address student understandings or misunderstandings. The final chapter explores pros and cons of response systems that use mobile devices and smart phones, and the book concludes with an annotated list of further resources, such as books, articles, and videos.

"An interesting book that raises many important questions"--Journal of Peace Research

"Comprehensive examination of the myriad costs of war."
--"Forecast"

"A compact and cogent study. Goldstein makes a fine example of a nonideologue at work."
--"Publishers Weekly"

"Goldstein does an admirable job in breaking down current war costs and who we pay them."
--"Jewish Herald-Voice"

"Goldstein is not an economist but a political scientist who takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of war. Here he argues that the war on terrorism is much more expensive than we have been told and that we must spend now to win it quickly or we will pay far more in the future to do so. Recommended for all public libraries."
--"Library Journal"

"Forget the astronomical numbers you read about in the press --- $120 billion here, $87 billion there. Here's how much the war is costing you personally. Goldstein, political scientist and "scholar of war" creates a crude but credible model for determining the cost of war per household in the United States."--"The Atlanta Journal-Constitution"

"An important book for all Americans about the real costs of the War on Terror. It asks the tough questions about who pays and gives us a better understanding of the war's impact on our everyday lives."
--General (Ret.) Wesley K. Clark, former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO

""The Real Price of War" ought to be required reading in the Kerry campaign and among all Americans who want their government to do the right thing. It is a timely book with far-reaching implications for every American."
--David Moats, Winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prizefor Editorial Writing

"Joshua S. Goldstein's argument is simple, powerfully argued, and persuasive: we have not spent enough to win the war on terror, and we cannot afford not to. For those who say we are already spending too much, he marshals an impressive range of historical evidence to prove that we are spending much less than we have on past wars. For those who say the status quo threat level is acceptable, he presents frightening scenarios to prove that it is not. The conclusions he draws are as convincing as they are dire."
--Nisid Hajari, Managing Editor, Newsweek International

"Engaging."
--"Kirkus Reviews"

"In this engrossing and Cassandra-like book, the respected Professor Joshua Goldstein tells us, just as we need it most badly, of the true 'costs' of war-and warns America of the new era that it has inaugurated in the world."
--Georgie Anne Geyer, Syndicated Columnist, Universal Press Syndicate, and author of "Guerrilla Prince: The Untold Story of Fidel Castro"

"Joshua Goldstein has always written about big topics, and this is the biggest: If the war against terrorism is to be won-and it must be won-what will be the likely costs and how should they be allocated among the American people? He writes with passion, insight, evidence, and fundamental fairness on an issue that will shape all our lives."
--Bruce Russett, Dean Acheson Professor of International Relations and Political Science, Yale University

Are Americans in denial about the costs of the War on Terror? In The Real Price of War, Joshua S. Goldstein argues that we need to face up to what the war costs the average American--both in taxes and in changes to our way of life. Goldstein contends thatin order to protect the United States from future attacks, we must fight--and win--the War on Terror.
