Journeys Through Conflict is the story of the Conflict Early Warning Systems (CEWS) project of the International Social Science Research Council. It relates the history of the project, presents its empirically grounded approach to anticipating violent conflict, and shows how the approach may be extended to other social science research arenas. Phase analysis of conflict life cycles, comparative case studies, reconstructed narratives, and policy lessons are hallmarks of this pathbreaking work by an international, interdisciplinary group of expert conflict analysts. Journeys Through Conflict projects alternate pathways to war and peace by a unique coding, graphing, and computational procedure that takes into account both contested conflict histories and future conflict resolutions.
How and why do women's contributions matter in peace and security processes? Why should women's activities in this sphere be explored separately from peacebuilding efforts in general? Decisively answering these questions, Sanam Anderlini offers a comprehensive, cross-regional analysis of women's peacebuilding initiatives around the world. Anderlini also traces the evolution of international policies in this arena and highlights the endemic problems that stunt progress. Her astute analysis, based on extensive research and field experience, demonstrates how gender sensitivity in programming can be a catalytic component in the complex task of building sustainable peace and provides concrete examples of how to draw on women's untapped potential.
In recent years the terms 'genocide' and 'ethnic cleansing' have not only re-entered the common vocabulary, but seem now to be tolerated and accepted as the inevitable consequences of the wars and conflicts that, as much as ever before, plague the world's landscape. But as yet there is no globally accepted structure through which conflict can be tackled. How should we as individuals, as nations and as an international community respond to conflict? Civil Wars, Civil Peace offers a radical new approach to conflict prevention, resolution and diplomacy. Designed for undergraduate students as well as for practitioners and peace negotiators, the book provides an overview of conflict in the post-Cold War world, covering key topics such as identifying and assessing early warnings of conflict, and the need to take early action; information gathering and analysis; and the need for preventive diplomacy. In particular, the role of non-governmental organisations and other third-party mediators in conflict resolution is considered.
