The Difference that Gender Makes to International Peace and Security (Paperback): Sara Davies, Nicole George, Jacqui True The Difference that Gender Makes to International Peace and Security (Paperback)
Sara Davies, Nicole George, Jacqui True
R1,284 Discovery Miles 12 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fifteen years after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 which establishes the Women, Peace and Security agenda, there is now a need to assess the impacts of gender equality efforts, and to understand why and how gender equality reforms have advanced to the extent that they have. This book examines how international peace and security is re-envisioned from a gender perspective by mostly focusing on the nuances presented by the Asia Pacific region. It argues that despite the diversity of political, socio-cultural and economic systems in the Asia Pacific, women and girls in the region continue to experience similar forms of insecurities. Several countries in the Asia Pacific have demonstrated relative peace and stability. In addition, women's leadership and participation in peacebuilding are and continue to be increasingly recognized in the region too. However, as the chapters in this book demonstrate, applying a critical gender analysis allows for the interrogation of 'veneers' of political order which can then mask or normalise everyday gendered insecurities. The analysis of country cases such as Myanmar, Cambodia and Fiji underscores a rethinking of the political order in the Asia Pacific which leaves existing gender inequalities intact. The chapters in this book were originally published in a special issue in the International Feminist Journal of Politics.

Integrating Math and Science in Early Childhood Classrooms Through Big Ideas - A Constructivist Approach (Paperback): Christine... Integrating Math and Science in Early Childhood Classrooms Through Big Ideas - A Constructivist Approach (Paperback)
Christine Chaill e, Sara Davis
R2,516 Discovery Miles 25 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Integrating Math and Science in Early Childhood Classrooms Through Big Ideas offers teachers a way to think about the future classroom and to meet the needs of children who come to into it with diverse experience, knowledge, and abilities. "Change how we think about math and science for young children," the authors say in their Preface. "Instead of separating the disciplines, planning lessons and topics and projects aimed at math OR science content, let's look at the world the way the child does. Children think in terms of big ideas." In this unique book, the authors focus on big ideas-like patterns, transformation, movement, balance, and relationships-as a way to think about content, and they integrate science and mathematics through these big ideas, rather than linking them topically. The book looks at why it is important to think about thinking, introduces assessment early to help the teacher plan for assessment before teaching even begins, and sets up an environment that will support the construction of the big ideas that integrate math and science. Real-life scenarios provide invaluable insights into the teacher's thinking and planning, and each chapter includes two modules to be used for in-depth exploration of different aspects of the big ideas. It's a unique exploration of thinking and learning.

Great is Peace - A Modern Commentary on Talmud Bavli Tractate Derek Eretz Zuta (Paperback): Sara Davies, Arthur Segal Great is Peace - A Modern Commentary on Talmud Bavli Tractate Derek Eretz Zuta (Paperback)
Sara Davies, Arthur Segal
R541 Discovery Miles 5 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Best-selling author RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL provides the first modern commentary ever written on the Babylonian Talmud's Tractate Derek Eretz Zuta, contextualizing archaic references and bringing its timeless wisdom to life in accessible, contemporary language.

Our sages revealed the path for living at peace with others and taught how to:

-cultivate mindfulness

-stay centered in times of stress

-let go of negativity

-increase self-esteem

-bring out the best in others

-maintain harmony in relationships

-deal with difficult people

-live in serenity, knowing that above all else, ''Great is Peace."

Two of the many important maxims in Derek Eretz Zuta:

"If others speak evil of you let the greatest thing seem unimportant in your eyes; but if you have spoken evil of others, let the least word seem important."

"If you have done much good let it seem little in your eyes, and say: 'Not on my own have I done this, but through the good which has come to me through others'; but let a small kindness done to you appear great."

Chapter Ten, known as "the Chapter on Peace," was considered to be so important by our rabbis that they wanted to make it a tractate of Talmud by itself. One of God's holy names is Shalom. Derek Eretz Zuta teaches us to "love peace and pursue peace."

"People are hungry for civility. More than ever this is a time for civility. Love is the key to many of our problems. I will not let anyone occupy my heart with hate. It is not what someone calls you, but what you answer to." - "Donna Brazile, Vice-Chairwoman, Democratic National Committee."

At once a history lesson and guide to interpersonal ethics, Great is Peace is an eye-opening, life-affirming resource for anyone who asks "What does Judaism have to offer in the 21st century?" Our great sages understood what many today have forgotten - that each of us can heal and repair the world - one person, one interaction at a time. Each of us can be a vessel of our prayers and hopes for shalom, peace. Each of us can live happy, joyous and free, even when the world seems to be an upside-down place.

Here is what others are saying about Great is Peace:

"Rabbi Arthur Segal has taken a little known Talmudic Tractate on a very important subject: treating our fellow man correctly. He has dissected it with his erudite ability to help us understand how the sages of the past intended us to behave toward one another. Rabbi Segal is a outstanding teacher of Talmud-Torah and his insight into this subject is greatly appreciated. I continue to look forward to reading more of his writings and highly recommend this book to you."

-"Rabbi Gershon Steinberg-Caudill"

"Rabbi Arthur Segal's Commentary on Derek Eretz Zuta is an extraordinary collection of Jewish teachings and observations on ways to refine ourselves towards greater holiness and healthiness. Leading us to align ourselves with quality character attributes through personal development (Mussar), this text is a valuable source for study. It is a gift for those who aspire to mitzvah-centered living, rather than self-centered living, not by being self-less, rather by cultivating self as a vessel for the light of Torah."

-"Rabbi Goldie Milgram, Executive Vice-President, ReclaimingJudaism.org"

Along with Rabbi Dr. Arthur Segal's other 4 best-selling titles, Great is Peace is text worth studying and cherishing. It deserves a place in your library of meaningful books.

A SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER! 'Determined, focused and full of heart - this book encapsulates all that has made Sara Davies the powerhouse she is.' Giovanna Fletcher From student halls to Dragons Den (and now Strictly Come Dancing!), this is Sara Davies MBE's story of building her multi-million-pound business from scratch and why we can all make it big. ------------------------ Sara Davies is the queen of crafts. Whilst working as an intern in a small company, Sara noticed a gap in the industry and decided to pursue it. By the time she left university, she was running a business with a half million-pound turnover from her student bedroom. When she became the youngest of BBC 1's iconic Dragons, that turnover was GBP25 million. Today, she is one of Britain's biggest business names. In her first book - as full of warmth, wit and wisdom as she is - Sara shares what it took to get there: from manning factories overnight with her mam and dad to hitting the trade shows of Las Vegas alone, armed with little more than ambition and passion. We Can All Make It chronicles everything from what she looks for in a business investment to how she manages to find time to enjoy family life while running an empire. From the buzz of witnessing your latest product sell out, dancing the cha cha as you broadcast live to 96 million American homes, thriving after lockdown to being at the head of the biggest tables, Sara's unique storytelling answers all the questions for women in business today. Praise for Sara Davies 'A business whizz' - Radio Times 'A brilliant read.' Steph McGovern 'Page-turning, inspiring' - Gethin Jones 'She is amazing!' - Alison Hammond 'Energy, focus, commitment: she's relentless!' - Peter Jones

Wayside Teaching - Connecting With Students to Support Learning (Paperback, Annotated edition): Sara Davis Powell Wayside Teaching - Connecting With Students to Support Learning (Paperback, Annotated edition)
Sara Davis Powell
R1,041 Discovery Miles 10 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Wayside Teaching: Connecting With Students to Support Learning is about intentionally practicing what building level educators do every day in perhaps intentional and/or unintentional ways: relate to students. Wayside-teaching practices enhance academic learning and complement academic rigour because they build student self-concept, motivate learners to engage in the curriculum, and provide a sense of belonging and safety that can help free learners to participate more fully in their own education. In this practical guide, Sara Davis Powell uses the framework of attitude, approach, and action to demonstrate how wayside teaching-the informal curriculum, the implicit instruction, the teaching and learning that happens in sometimes unintentional ways-can be intentionally practiced across all grade levels to facilitate learning and bring about enhanced student outcomes.
