A first-ever collection of contemporary Muslim women’s khutbahs (sermons) drawing on their social, religious, and spiritual experiences and framed by original reflections on an emerging Muslim feminist ethics Within the Muslim world, there is a dynamic and exciting social change afoot: a number of communities across the globe have embraced more gender-inclusive and representative ideas of religious authority. Within some spaces, women have taken on the role of preacher at the Jumu’ah (Friday) communal prayers. In other communities, women have been leading the prayers, officiating at marriage and funeral ceremonies, or participating on mosque boards or executive committees. These new developments signify a transformation in contemporary positions on gender and religious authority. This pioneering book makes an innovative contribution to Muslim feminist ethics. It is grounded in a collection of religious sermons (khutbahs) by contemporary Muslim women in a variety of new and emerging contexts, in South Africa, Senegal, Egypt, Malaysia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Canada, Mexico, the United States, Germany, Denmark, and the United Kingdom.
It is not unusual for even seasoned educators to express some bewilderment about teaching in today's fast-paced, technological, outcome-oriented environment. The overwhelming quantity of media messages bombarding learners has led them to develop a significant level of scepticism towards any information that they receive, and the old methods of teaching no longer seem to be effective. An educator's guide to effective classroom management provides clear and concise discussions of classroom management aspects within a present day South African context. An educator's guide to effective classroom management gives educators an opportunity to question and enhance their approach to teaching and to reduce the bureaucracy of their classrooms. It provides valuable knowledge, practical ideas and advice on the development of a personal classroom management plan to suit individual styles of teaching and thus promote successful learning. It is student centred and interactive, including practical activities and mind maps for clarity as well as opportunities for self-assessment. It also provides an education law and policy framework to help educators to manage their classrooms in a lawful manner and to avoid legal issues. An educator's guide to effective classroom management is aimed at pre-service education students as well as already practising educators who wish to improve their classroom practice.
Prosopis (Prosopis juliflora) is a xerophyte which, in its native habitats has been a desert plant. As long as it was confined to that habitat, P. juliflora was a great resource, improving the region’s micrometeorology, binding its sandy soil, and providing shelter, fuel, feed, food, medicines, and cosmetics to the people of such regions. In particular, for the economically weaker inhabitants, P.juliflora was a lifeline. But when P. juliflora was indiscriminately introduced in other regions of the world in a hope to derive similar benefits from it, things began to go awry. Indeed, among the invasive species of plants which are spreading at an alarming rate in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, P.juliflora is arguably the most hardy and resilient. It is growing so explosively that it even enters roads and homes, driving humans out of their dwellings. The resulting damage to biodiversity is enormous. This book highlights the dual role played so far by P. juliflora and itemizes the facets that make it a blessing in some contexts and a bane in other contexts. Authored by leading experts in the field, Prosopis juliflora: Attributes, Impact, Utilization is the first title of its kind to comprehensively discuss this hardy plant species. It will be an essential read for students, researchers and governmental agencies interested in plant biology, forestry, plant ecology, invasive plant species and environmental science.
This book covers the different aspects, such as patents, trademarks
and copyright of Intellectual Property (IP) from a more practical
business perspective. Intellectual Property and Assessing its
Financial Value describes the differences between regions, mainly
the differences between the US and EU. In addition, several tools
are presented for assessing the value of new IP, which is of
importance before engaging on a new project that could result in
new IP or for licensing purposes. The first chapter introduces the
different types of IP and illustrating the business importance of
capturing and safeguarding IP, the second chapter discusses patents
and other forms of IP with subsequent chapters exploring copyright
and trademarks in more detail, and a concluding chapter on the
future of systems that can assess new IP value.
Femtosecond optics involves the study of ultra-short pulses of
light. Understanding the behaviour of these light pulses makes it
possible to develop ultra-fast lasers with a wide range of
applications in such areas as medical imaging, chemical analysis
and micro-machining. Written by two leading experts in the field,
this book reviews the theory of the interaction of femtosecond
light pulses with matter, femtosecond lasers and laser systems, and
the principles of femtosecond coherent spectroscopy of impurity
amorphous media.

When eldest son Roman Carruthers is summoned home after his father’s car accident, he finds his younger brother, Dante, in debt to dangerous criminals and his sister, Neveah, exhausted from holding the family―and the family business―together. Neveah and their father, who run the Carruthers Crematorium in the run-down central Virginia town of Jefferson Run, see death up close every day. But mortality draws even closer when it becomes clear that the crash that landed their father in a coma was no accident and Dante’s recklessness has placed them all in real danger. Roman, a financial whiz with a head for numbers and a talent for making his clients rich, has some money to help buy his brother out of trouble. But in his work with wannabe tough guys, he’s forgotten that there are real gangsters out there. As his bargaining chips go up in smoke, Roman realizes that he has only one thing left to offer to save his brother: himself, and his own particular set of skills. Roman begins his work for the criminals while Neveah tries to uncover the long-ago mystery of what happened to their mother, who disappeared when they were teenagers. But Roman is far less of a pushover than the gangsters realize. He is willing to do anything to save his family. Anything. Because everything burns.

-- In a century marked by innumerable armed conflicts and incessant theological quarrels, including tensions between the Church, the State and the Philosophes, literary correspondence provides a privileged site via which to examine the mechanisms of surveillance. Epistolary communication was at the heart of daily life among the eighteenth-century literati. Familiar with methods of surveillance, the Enlightenment elite often amused themselves by sending unsealed missives, or else directly mocked those with prying eyes, even urging them to continue reading. Both public and private documents, located at the crossroads of all forms of activity, these letters have at times been destroyed, lost or forgotten. While some remain forever sealed or silenced, others form part of Europe's literary heritage. Whether in letters between friends, diplomatic correspondence or police reports, one conceals and surveils oneself. The eight articles that constitute this volume offer an epistolary journey through eighteenth-century Europe by focusing on forgotten or famous people, even unknowns, all of whom must have written their correspondence while watching or knowing that they were being watched.
