Informed by Eriksonian psychology, this study of Isherwood's fiction examines the ever-changing relationship between the writer and his protagonists. The author explores how Isherwood's fiction achieves artistic integration and literary significance only when it reflects his personal concerns through theme and technique as he experiments with new narrative strategies.;An evolving self emerges as Isherwood's work moves from the use of the namesake narrator and adolescent anxieties to an omniscient narrator and the concerns of young and mature adulthood and then to a divided narrative voice as mature age reviews and assesses the meaning of one's life.

Gender inequalities in education - in terms of systematic variations in access to educational institutions, in competencies, school marks, and educational certificates along the axis of gender - have tremendously changed over the course of the 20th century. Although this does not apply to all stages and areas of the educational career, it is particularly obvious looking at upper secondary education. Before the major boost of educational expansion in the 1960s, women's participation in upper secondary general education, and their chances to successfully finish this educational pathway, have been lower than men's. However, towards the end of the 20th century, women were outperforming men in many European countries and beyond. The international contributions to this book attempt to shed light on the mechanisms behind gender inequalities and the changes made to reduce this inequality. Topics explored by the contributors include gender in science education in the UK; women's education in Luxembourg in the 19th and 20th century; the 'gender gap' debates and their rhetoric in the UK and Finland; sociological perspectives on the gender-equality discourse in Finland; changing gender differences in West Germany in the 20th century; the interplay of subjective well-being and educational attainment in Switzerland; and a psychological perspective on gender identities, gender-related perceptions, students' motivation, intelligence, personality, and the interaction between student and teacher gender. Das gemeinsame Lernen von Kindern mit und ohne Behinderungen in der Regelschule erscheint in den aktuellen Diskussionen um die Inklusion vielfach als etwas ganzlich Neues. Befurworter wie Skeptiker nehmen den von der UN-Behindertenrechtskonvention angestossenen Bruch mit der uberkommenen Organisationsform von getrennten Regel- und Foerderschulen je nach Standort als Ausweis einer besonders fortschrittlichen oder fragwurdigen Neuausrichtung des Schulsystems wahr. Dass es bereits im 19. und fruhen 20. Jahrhundert Versuche gab, Kinder mit besonderen Foerderbedurfnissen in die allgemeine Volksschule zu integrieren, ist dagegen fast unbekannt. Die vorliegende Studie stellt ausgewahlte historische Konzepte des Gemeinsamen Lernens in ihrem historischen Entstehungszusammenhang dar und zeichnet die ausserordentlich kontroversen zeitgenoessischen Debatten nach, die um diese Ansatze gefuhrt wurden. Daruber hinaus fragt sie nach den Ursachen ihres Scheiterns.

DaB sich fiir mathematische Formeln Nomogramme entwerfen lassen, bedarf eigentlich keines Nachweises, und doch erscheint die Aufgabe auBerordentlich reizvoll, reinmathematische Zusammenhange in nomographischer Bearbeitung darzustellen, um so mehr, als sich auf diesem Wege mannigfache neue Gedankengange ergeben. Wer von der 1ngenieurwissenschaft her an die Nomographie heran tritt, wird sie leicht wesentlich unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Ratio nalisierung ansehen. Wenn auch keineswegs verkannt werden solI, daB mit dem Schlagwort yom "zeitsparenden Rechnen" die Arbeitsweise nomographischer Methoden durchaus getroffen wird, so darf man ebensowenig den Sinn der Nomographie hierin etwa erschOpfen. Ent wicklungen, in denen die. Eigenart zeitsparender Verfahren heraus gearbeitet wird, besitzen wir in groBer Zahl; diese Fragen durften daher im vorliegenden Buch bewuBt zuriicktreten. Das Prinzip der Okonomie wird dennoch nicht verloren gehen, jedoch einen Wandel von der rein praktischen mehr zur wissenschaftlichen Seite hin er fahren. 1m Vordergrund steht die Bedeutung der N omographie als Darstellungsmittel, und als Leitgedanke wird iiberall die abbildungs geometrische Grundlage betont. So lehnt sich das Buch nicht nur in Bezeichnungsweise und Herleitung an das in gleichem Sinne geschriebene "Lehrbuch der Nomographie"l an, es versucht, die dort behandelten Transformationen weiterzuentwickeln. Daher sind nicht lediglich Rechentafeln und Darstellungen fUr nume rische Beziehungen gegeben, sondern auch rein geometrische Mannig faltigkeiten mit nomographischen Hilfsmitteln abgebildet. Diese weiter gehende Auffassung und Zielsetzung des Buches wird in der Einleitung naher umrissen."
