Believing and Acting - The Pragmatic Turn in Comparative Religion and Ethics (Hardcover, New): G. Scott Davis Believing and Acting - The Pragmatic Turn in Comparative Religion and Ethics (Hardcover, New)
G. Scott Davis
R1,418 Discovery Miles 14 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How should religion and ethics be studied if we want to understand what people believe and why they act the way they do? In the 1980s and '90s postmodernist worries about led to debates that turned on power, truth, and relativism. Since the turn of the century scholars impressed by 'cognitive science' have introduced concepts drawn from evolutionary biology, neurosciences, and linguistics in the attempt to provide 'naturalist' accounts of religion. Deploying concepts and arguments that have their roots in the pragmatism of C. S. Peirce, Believing and Acting argues that both approaches are misguided and largely unhelpful in answering the questions that matter: What did those people believe then? How does it relate to what these people want to do now? What is our evidence for our interpretations? Pragmatic inquiry into these questions recommends an approach that questions grand theories, advocates a critical pluralism about religion and ethics that defies disciplinary boundaries in the pursuit of the truth. Rationality, on a pragmatic approach, is about solving particular problems in medias res, thus there is no hard and fast line to be drawn between inquiry and advocacy; both are essential to negotiating day to day life. The upshot is an approach to religion and ethics in which inquiry looks much like the art history of Michael Baxandall and advocacy like the art criticism of Arthur Danto.

Outside the Inner Dialogue - A Haiku a Day for a Year (Hardcover): Greg Scott Davis Outside the Inner Dialogue - A Haiku a Day for a Year (Hardcover)
Greg Scott Davis; Donald Alan Straub
R802 Discovery Miles 8 020 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Outside the Inner Dialogue" is a collection of Haiku poems written during the turn of the Millennium. The task of writing "A Haiku a Day for a Year" emerged from Don searching out a constructive and productive means in dealing with his Grandmother's passing. While sticking with the traditional 5-7-5 line syllable structure, he's chosen to play with the Haikus in unconventional and contrasting ways, exploring any and every subject that comes to mind. It's about taking notice of our surroundings to the most minute and finite degree. This is the first book in the Lake Parking Trilogy.

The Classic of Changes in Cultural Context - A Textual Archaeology of the Yi Jing (Hardcover, New): Scott Davis The Classic of Changes in Cultural Context - A Textual Archaeology of the Yi Jing (Hardcover, New)
Scott Davis
R2,506 Discovery Miles 25 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Classic of Changes (Yi jing) is one of the most ancient texts known to human civilization, always given pride of place in the Chinese classical tradition. And yet the powerful fascination exerted by the Classic of Changes has preserved the archaic text, widely attracting readers with a continuing interest in trying to understand it as a source of reflection and guide to ordinary circumstances of human life. Its monumental influence over Chinese thought makes the text an indispensable element in any informed approach to Chinese culture.Accordingly, the book focuses on the archaic core of the Classic of Changes and proposes a structural anthropological analysis for two main reasons. First, unlike many treatments of the Yi jing, there is a concern to place the text carefully in the context of the ancient culture

Religion and Justice in the War Over Bosnia - in the War over Bosnia (Paperback): G. Scott Davis Religion and Justice in the War Over Bosnia - in the War over Bosnia (Paperback)
G. Scott Davis
R1,717 Discovery Miles 17 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bosnia and Hercegovina emerged in the wake of the Second World War as a melting pot for the cultures that had determined the history of the South Slavs since the middle ages. Catholic, Orthodox, and Muslim all shared in and contributed to the political and cultural life of Yugoslavia's most diverse republic.
In 1992, this life was shattered as separatist militias brought war to Bosnia and Hercegovina. What is the religious heritage that drives the warring factions and how does it relate to the nationalist aspirations of many of the participants? From diverse academic and philosophical perspectives, the works of Jean Bethke Elshtain, James Turner Johnson, Michael Sells, John Kelsay, and G. Scott Davis will inform not just scholars of ethics, politics and religion, but everyone concerned with the prospects for justice in the post-Cold War world.

Out of the Shadows - The Global Intensification of Supplementary Education (Hardcover, New): Janice Aurini, Julian Dierkes,... Out of the Shadows - The Global Intensification of Supplementary Education (Hardcover, New)
Janice Aurini, Julian Dierkes, Scott Davies
R3,309 Discovery Miles 33 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Supplementary education consists of private instruction that complements and sometimes 'shadows' formal school content. Providers range from informal and part-time tutors to highly institutionalized, multi-national corporate franchises. This phenomenon is growing worldwide and has many potential impacts on formal education systems. This volume is the first multi-national examination of this topic and includes 'big picture' analyses to comparatively explain the intensity, authority and policy contexts of supplementary education. Quantitative and qualitative case studies of countries with high and low intensity forms of supplementary education are detailed. The chapters aim to deepen comparative and interdisciplinary knowledge on the impact of these educational markets on formal school systems, and inform future research and policy on supplementary education.

The comical waddle of the penguin entrances us. Illustrated with breathtaking images by one of the world's leading wildlife photographers, The Science of Hope informs as it educates, describing the psychology and science behind our desire to connect with these animals while promoting a message of hope by highlighting positive conservation efforts around the world.

Pragmatism and Naturalism - Scientific and Social Inquiry After Representationalism (Hardcover): Matthew C. Bagger Pragmatism and Naturalism - Scientific and Social Inquiry After Representationalism (Hardcover)
Matthew C. Bagger; Contributions by Matthew C. Bagger, Scott Davis, Nancy Frankenberry, Terry Godlove, …
R2,332 Discovery Miles 23 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Most contemporary philosophers would call themselves naturalists, yet there is little consensus on what naturalism entails. Long signifying the notion that science should inform philosophy, debates over naturalism often hinge on how broadly or narrowly the terms nature and science are defined. The founding figures of American Pragmatism-C. S. Peirce (1839-1914), William James (1842-1910), and John Dewey (1859-1952)-developed a distinctive variety of naturalism by rejecting reductive materialism and instead emphasizing social practices. Owing to this philosophical lineage, pragmatism has made original and insightful contributions to the study of religion as well as to political theory. In Pragmatism and Naturalism, distinguished scholars examine pragmatism's distinctive form of nonreductive naturalism and consider its merits for the study of religion, democratic theory, and as a general philosophical orientation. Nancy Frankenberry, Philip Kitcher, Wayne Proudfoot, Jeffrey Stout, and others evaluate the contribution pragmatism can make to a viable naturalism, explore what distinguishes pragmatic naturalism from other naturalisms on offer, and address the pertinence of pragmatic naturalism to methodological issues in the study of religion. In parts dedicated to historical pragmatists, pragmatism in the philosophy and the study of religion, and pragmatism and democracy, they display the enduring power and contemporary relevance of pragmatic naturalism.

Education in a New Society - Renewing the Sociology of Education (Paperback): Jal Mehta, Scott Davies Education in a New Society - Renewing the Sociology of Education (Paperback)
Jal Mehta, Scott Davies
R1,065 Discovery Miles 10 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In recent decades, sociology of education has been dominated by quantitative analyses of race, class, and gender gaps in educational achievement. And while there's no question that such work is important, it leaves a lot of other fruitful areas of inquiry unstudied. This book takes that problem seriously, considering the way the field has developed since the 1960s and arguing powerfully for its renewal. The sociology of education, the contributors show, largely works with themes, concepts, and theories that were generated decades ago, even as both the actual world of education and the discipline of sociology have changed considerably. The moment has come, they argue, to break free of the past and begin asking new questions and developing new programs of empirical study. Both rallying cry and road map, Education in a New Society will galvanize the field.
