Accompanying an exhibition at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen
Dresden, this publication presents the glass swallow works Perched,
created by the artist Feleksan Onar. While drawing on sources from
her personal history as well as collective memory, Feleksan Onar's
works in glass deal with notions of identity, constructed
narratives, historical relations and impacts of politics on
society. In her recent project Perched, her story-telling in glass
reflects on the Syrian refugee situation. Triggered by witnessing
the helpless refugees strolling around the streets of Istanbul,
after being forced to leave their homelands, Perched has been
exhibited in the Pergamon Museum, Berlin, the New Jersey Visual
Arts Center and the Victoria& Albert Museum, London. The work
was interpreted as "a visceral expression of the fact that in spite
of differences of religion, culture, and individual histories, what
we all want most is to be in the place we call home," by the art
critic Lisa Morrow. A reading of Louis de Bernieres' novel Birds
Without Wings was an inspiration for Onar to create the series.
Glass works, inspired by a book, create its own history over time
and turn into a book again. This book marks the most comprehensive
publication on Perched to date. The result here is a complementary
structure addressing the aesthetic and political concepts inherent
in Feleksan Onar's art. Contiguity and fragility are the core of
this project and provides the form for this book. Newly
commissioned essays initiate sections that engage particular
aspects of Onar's work. Renowned author Louis de Bernieres
contributes a short story; Prof. Dr. Stefan Weber, Mariam
Rosser-Owen and Stefanie Bach propose a reading of Perched through
the exhibitions in the Pergamon Museum, the Victoria& Albert
Museum and the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden; and Nadania
Idriss questions how is art supposed to foster a culture of peace
and muses on being perched. Producing glass art, to use Onar's own
words, "not only expresses my past and present, but also my
anxieties and expectations for future. Through glass, I speak,
breathe and live." This is the story of birds standing together in
different places with their various colors and holding a vital
crisis in their silence, breath and life.
In Flavins and Flavoproteins: Methods and Protocols, expert
researchers in the field detail many of the methods which are now
commonly used to study flavins and flavoproteins. These include
review style methods and protocols to exemplify the variety, the
power and the success of modern techniques and methods in
application to flavoproteins. Part I of this Volume covers general
properties, syntheses and applications of free flavins as well as
its analogs and flavoproteins. Part II covers characterizations of
flavins and flavoproteins using modern experimental techniques as
well as theoretical methods. Written in the highly successful
Methods in Molecular Biology series format, the chapters include
the kind of detailed description and implementation advice that is
crucial for getting optimal results in the laboratory. Thorough and
intuitive, Flavins and Flavoproteins: Methods and Protocols aids
scientists in continuing to tackle the countless questions that
need to be answered to more fully comprehend the vast diversity and
specificity of flavin-governed biological processes.

This book contains selected papers presented at the "International
Annual Conference of the German Operations Research Society
(OR2012)" which was held September 4 -7, 2012 at the Leibniz
Universitat Hannover, Germany. The international conference, which
also serves as the annual meeting of the German Operations Research
Society (GOR), attracted more than 500 participants from more than
39 countries. Special attention at the conference was given to the
three topics "Energy, Markets and Mobility". The OR2012 conference
has addressed these topics from an OR perspective, treating them
not only in isolation, but also with respect to their numerous and
exciting interconnections, such as new energy for new mobility
concepts and new market mechanisms for sustainable energy
production to name but a few. The proceedings show that this
conference topic is an important and promising area to apply
Operations Research. The book also contains numerous papers
addressing the full scope of fields in Operations Research.
Lying between deserts, mountain chains and seas, Iran developed a
fascinating cultural landscape. 360 objects from the time of the
first advanced civilisations during the 3rd millennium BC until the
end of the Safavid Empire in the early 18th century illustrate the
outstanding significance of Iran as the initiator and centre of
intercultural exchange. Exquisite artworks from the Sarikhani
Collection in London and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin invite
visitors to embark on a journey in time through the cultural
heritage of Iran. The highlights include the great pre-Islamic
empires of the Achaemenids and the Sassanids, the establishment of
a Persian-Islamic culture, the masterly artistic achievements of
the 9th to the 13th centuries and the Golden Age of the Safavids.
They are brought together as in a multifaceted kaleidoscope in the
copious illustrations and provide insight into the art of the
courts and the urban elites.
The first years of the twenty-first century have witnessed an
impressive re-evaluation of Islamic art and archaeology. However,
while museums and galleries become increasingly important forums
for public interest in Muslim cultures, there has been little
discussion about content or categories of order and their new role
in the light of modern Museology, museum pedagogy and new
approaches in other fields of knowledge. This volume provides a
historical and conceptual analysis of Islamic art and documents the
successes and failings of its presentation in museums worldwide
thus far. The contributors challenge existing notions regarding the
research, methodology and analysis of Islamic art and investigate
the extent to which socio-historical and anthropological approaches
result in new analytical perspectives. They also examine the
difficulties that need to be overcome when presenting Islamic art
to avoid reducing the objects merely to the visual and aesthetic.
Museums covered in detail include the David Collection, Brooklyn
Museum's Arts of the Islamic World Galleries, the Museum of Islamic
Art in Doha, the Hermitage Museum, the British Museum, the Aga Khan
Museum in Toronto and the Pergamon Museum.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Volume 17 highlights major
developments in this area reported up to the end of 1999, with
results being set into the context of earlier work and presented as
a set of critical yet coherent overviews. The topics covered
describe contrasting types of application, ranging from biological
areas such as EPR and ENDOR studies of metalloproteins and evidence
of free-radical reactions in biology and medically-related systems,
to experimental developments and applications involving EPR
imaging, the use of very high fields, and time-resolved methods.
Critical reviews of applications involving bacterial
photosynthesis, spin-labelling and spin-probes studies of
self-assembled systems, and organometallic chemistry are also
included. As EPR continues to find new applications in virtually
all areas of modern science, including physics, chemistry, biology
and materials science, this series caters not only for experts in
the field, but also those wishing to gain a general overview of EPR
applications in a given area. Specialist Periodical Reports provide
systematic and detailed review coverage in major areas of chemical
research. Compiled by teams of leading authorities in the relevant
subject areas, the series creates a unique service for the active
research chemist, with regular, in-depth accounts of progress in
particular fields of chemistry. Subject coverage within different
volumes of a given title is similar and publication is on an annual
or biennial basis.
