This book explores the cycle of horror on US television in the
decade following the launch of The Walking Dead, considering the
horror genre from an industrial perspective. Examining TV horror
through rich industrial and textual analysis, this book reveals the
strategies and ambitions of cable and network channels, as well as
Netflix and Shudder, with regards to horror serialization. Selected
case studies; including American Horror Story, The Haunting of Hill
House, Creepshow, Ash vs Evil Dead, and Hannibal; explore horror
drama and the utilization of genre, cult and classic horror texts,
as well as the exploitation of fan practice, in the changing
economic landscape of contemporary US television. In the first
detailed exploration of graphic horror special effects as a marker
of technical excellence, and how these skills are used for the
promotion of TV horror drama, Gaynor makes the case that horror has
become a cornerstone of US television.
This thought-provoking book explores the link between animals,
people and their social and physical environments in relation to
livestock farming, food safety, food security and sustainability.
Providing an overview of livestock farming and animal related food
production systems in a one welfare context, One Welfare: Animal
Health and Welfare, Food Security and Sustainability begins by
considering the interconnections of animals, humans and their
environment. It then expands into the food production system, and
considers the integration of positive welfare, stress, use of
welfare indicators and the economic perspective. Written by a team
of international experts, it connects theory with best practice
examples and case studies from both organizations and individuals
that have successfully implemented a one welfare approach.
Essential reading for academics and practitioners who work within
farming, food systems and international development, this
ground-breaking text is also an important read for veterinary and
animal welfare professionals.

Something of a landmark in the history of dress... the period is
notably rich in its documentation and by carefully analysing both
the manuscript sources and published accounts [the author] is able
to produce an abundantly detailed narrative of the changes in
fashion... Tighter clothes outraged moralists, incensed monastic
chroniclers and stirred poets... in the last chapter the author
discuss[es] the relationship of the garments she has meticulously
reconstructed with their possible representations in manuscript
illumination, sculpture and painting... Of lasting value... a
pioneering book which will be of enduring value to historians of
dress and art alike. APOLLO
The evidence for this scholarly and detailed study is drawn in
the first instance from documentary sources... contemporary
illustrations reinforce the written evidence... The book contains
much that is of wider interest than the subject matter suggests:
the various mottoes used by Edward III are discussed, and the
problem of his expanding waistline is revealed; there are
interesting sidelights on the new orders of chivalry. ENGLISH
HISTORICAL REVIEW
1340 to 1363 were years notable for dramatic developments in
fashion and for extravagant spending on costume, foreshadowing the
later luxury of Richard II's court. Stella Mary Newton's
ground-breaking study discusses the costume of the period in quite
remarkable detail, drawing on surviving accounts from the royal
courts, the evidence of chronicles and poetry (often from
unpublished manuscripts), and contemporary paintings. Her
exploration of aspects of chivalry, particularly the choice of
mottoes and devices worn at tournaments, and of the exchange of
gifts of clothingbetween reigning monarchs, offers new insights
into the social history of the times, and she has much to say that
is crucial to the study of illuminated manuscripts of the
fourteenth century.
This book investigates, from a linguistic point of view, how rural
migrants adjust to an urban environment. The focus of Dr
Bortoni-Ricardo's study is speakers of Caipira, a dialect of
Brazilian Portuguese, who moved into a satellite city of Brasilia.
The volume examines in careful detail the historical and synchronic
sociolinguistic background of the migrants and the changes that
have taken place in their linguistic repertoire, with particular
emphasis on phonological variables. Both the theoretical framework
and novel methodology employed here derive from the assumption that
there are statistically measurable relations between the
characteristics of a person's social network and his/her linguistic
behaviour. The volume will thus be of interest to all readers,
whether linguists, psychologists or anthropologists, interested in
language accommodation. As an empirical study of cross-cultural
communication problems, it will also be of value to social
scientists concerned with the process of rural-urban migration.

Colorful coastal scenery (iceberg; lighthouse, etc.); photos of
real persons, some from the 1800s; sketches and snapshots of quaint
tools, seen now only in museums ... Together they make up a
pictorial introduction to Newfoundland (NL). The written text
tiptoes through more than 500 years in time, from European
discovery (1497) to just beyond millennium two. It''s a reminder of
significant historical events where this large island in the North
Atlantic has been used as a link - a stepping stone -between Europe
and Continental North America: the landing of the submarine
communications cable across the Atlantic (1866); Marconi''s
wireless apparatus (1901); pioneering flights in the skies over the
Atlantic (Alcock and Brown, 1919; Earhart, 1932 ...); USA defense
bases (WWII) ... even a safe haven during the horrors of 9-11-01
... Despite Britain''s initial anti-settlement laws, the oppressed
colony grew. Through determination, grit and fortitude, notable
colonists "battled" their way to political independence within the
Commonwealth - elected representatives; NL Prime Minister, one
succeeding another, and another ...; NL minted currency; NL postage
stamps ... Foreign investors became attracted to the potential of
natural resources. Viable mines and paper mills became realities;
railway lines and coastal shipping routes were established ...
Britain was supported during WWI (1914-1918), both financially and
with human lives ... Then the world''s Great Depression (1930s)
hits. Politically, the story turns grim here, even fatal ... Did
the extended "lifeline" have a noose attached to its receiving end?
Could things have been managed in a more compassionate manner?
Question after question arises.
