This book details how the processes of communication are affected
by the presence of a pandemic and establishes a research agenda of
those effects across the broad field of communication studies.
Through contributions from experts in communication subdisciplines
such as crisis, organizational, interpersonal, health, intergroup,
and intercultural, this book provides the reader with a
comprehensive view of the emerging field of study "pandemic
communication." Each chapter has four primary objectives: to 1)
define critical issues of consideration for pandemic communication
from its subdiscipline's perspective, 2) examine how communication
varies during pandemic(s), 3) provide examples of how pandemic(s)
have affected communication, and 4) propose a research agenda to
build pandemic communication theory. This book is suited to
undergraduate or post-graduate courses or modules in communication
studies across a variety of subdisciplines as well as a reference
for researchers in the subject.

- COMPREHENSIVE: The book offers an unbiased introduction to all
three methodological paradigms: positivist, interpretive,
critical/cultural (quantitative, qualitative, critical). -
INNOVATIVE: The book includes new sample student papers along with
critiques of these papers to that students can model their own work
on that of their peers. - FOCUSED ON THE STUDENT: Specific
attention is given to presenting conceptual and theoretical
information regarding methods, and to providing real-life examples
and exercises that put the various methods to use. Each method
chapter includes examples of how scholars in the field of
communication have used the particular method and how practitioners
have used the method.

This book combines various theoretical approaches to explore how
Finland and its people responded to the European Union (EU) refugee
crisis. Combining interviews with Finns, voluntary migrants to
Finland and refugees in Finland, the text presents differing
perspectives on migration in this country. Key themes addressed in
the text include the extent to which the different groups perceive
one another to be economic, political, and cultural threats to
Finnishness. In addition, the cultural fusion of Finnish and
migrant culture is presented as a threat and opportunity for
Finland and its future.
What is intercultural communication? How does perspective shape a
person's definition of the key tenets of the term and the field?
These are the core questions explored by this accessible global
introduction to intercultural communication. Each chapter explores
the topic from a different geographic, religious, theoretical,
and/or methodological perspective, with an emphasis on non-Western
approaches, including Buddhist, South American, Muslim, and Chinese
perspectives. Featuring the voices of a range of international
contributors, this new textbook presents the full breadth of
diverse approaches to intercultural communication and showcases the
economic, political, and cultural/societal needs for and benefits
of communicative competence.
This book offers students a comprehensive, theoretical, and
practical guide to communication theory. Croucher defines the
various perspectives on communication theory-the social scientific,
interpretive, and critical approaches-and then takes on the
theories themselves, with topics including interpersonal
communication, organizational communication, intercultural
communication, persuasion, critical and rhetorical theory and other
key concepts. Each theory chapter includes a sample
undergraduate-written paper that applies the described theory,
along with edits and commentary by Croucher, giving students an
insider's glimpse of the way communication theory can be written
about and applied in the classroom and in real life. Featuring
exercises, case studies and keywords that illustrate and fully
explain the various communication theories, Understanding
Communication Theory gives students all the tools they need to
understand and apply prominent communication theories.

Conflict, Mediated Message, and Group Dynamics: Intersections of
Communication establishes a framework to explore the ways emotions
enter a conflict scenario and investigate their role as either
causes or consequences of conflict. This edited collection's
chapters shed light on the questions of the extent to which context
on the one hand and culture-related dimensions on the other are
conducive to conflict dynamicity and management either by calming
emotions-and conflict-or by increasing their severity.
Approaches to Conflict: Theoretical, Interpersonal, and Discursive
Dynamics aims to investigate the role of communication and emotions
in conflict contexts. In addition to the fundamental importance of
communication in various aspects of conflict, this volume offers a
prominent position to the inherent part played by the effects of a
wide range of emotions. This multi-disciplinary project draws from
communication studies and media, public relations, philosophy,
psychology and neuroscience, linguistics, business studies,
political science, literature, and cultural studies.
In the wake of numerous historical and current geopolitical, social
and economic events/tragedies, misunderstandings have emerged and
proliferated about Islam and Christianity. Inadequate media
coverage, lack of interpersonal understanding/knowledge, and
deep-seeded prejudices have led to the communication of various
misconceptions. These misconceptions have ranged from how Islam and
Christianity began, to confusion over how and even if governments
and society should protect the rights of religious groups. This
book provides a glimpse into how misperceptions between Muslims and
Christians in France and Britain perpetuate interpersonal and
societal conflicts. Through the use of in-depth interviews and
statistical analysis, Muslims and Christians express their
experiences. Christians explain how they perceive Islam changing
the very nature of Europe. Furthermore, Christians assert this
change is something Christian Europe should resist. Muslims, on the
other hand, see Europe as an unwelcoming home that expects them to
change and become Europeans but does not understand their faith or
heritage. Readers will find vivid descriptions from respondents of
their experiences from living as a Muslim or a Christian in a
Europe going through what many consider an identity shift.
This volume is one of the only case studies that tests cultural
adaptation theory in the real world. It examines the failed
cultural integration of France's Muslim population and the tension
that has resulted. Through the use of in-depth interviews with
Muslims and non-Muslims in France, this analysis reveals that
French-Muslims are unable and unwilling to completely assimilate to
French culture. This finding runs counter to cultural adaptation
theory. Readers will find the text both theoretically engaging and
filled with rich interviews from French men and women from many
walks of life.
In this anthology, prominent scholars in the field examine the
relationship between religion and communication. Essays discuss the
topic from various theoretical, methodological, and communication
approaches including health communication, interpersonal
communication, intercultural/interracial communication,
organizational communication, rhetoric, and media studies. The
cutting-edge research gathered here investigates religious
ideologies and the role religious beliefs play in public life
around the world. The book highlights the extent to which national
and international events continue to propel religion into our
public discourse, illuminating its critical role in how individuals
and institutions see themselves and others. The scope, depth, and
richness of the research presented here is critical, in this area
of evolving scholarship, to understanding the centrality of
religious beliefs and values to the ways we make sense of the world
and our experiences in it.
