The Spirit Says - Inspiration and Interpretation in Israelite, Jewish, and Early Christian Texts (Hardcover): Ronald Herms,... The Spirit Says - Inspiration and Interpretation in Israelite, Jewish, and Early Christian Texts (Hardcover)
Ronald Herms, John R Levison, Archie T Wright
R3,846 Discovery Miles 38 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Spirit Says offers a stunning collection of articles by an influential assemblage of scholars, all of whom lend considerable insight to the relationship between inspiration and interpretation. They address this otherwise intractable question with deft and occasionally daring readings of a variety of texts from the ancient world, including-but not limited to-the scriptures of early Judaism and Christianity. The thrust of this book can be summed up not so much in one question as in four: o What is the role of revelation in the interpretation of Scripture? o What might it look like for an author to be inspired? o What motivates a claim to the inspired interpretation of Scripture? o Who is inspired to interpret Scripture? More often than not, these questions are submerged in this volume under the tame rubrics of exegesis and hermeneutics, but they rise in swells and surges too to the surface, not just occasionally but often. Combining an assortment of prominent voices, this book does not merely offer signposts along the way. It charts a pioneering path toward a model of interpretation that is at once intellectually robust and unmistakably inspired.

Hardy and His Readers (Hardcover, New): T. Wright Hardy and His Readers (Hardcover, New)
T. Wright
R1,472 Discovery Miles 14 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study examines Hardy's prolonged struggle with his contemporary readers, whose bourgeois values he despised. Initially content to compromise, to provide them with congenial entertainment, Hardy resorted at first to strategies of subversion, smuggling material past his editors and finally to outspoken attack. T.R. Wright attempts to balance historical research into the response of "actual" readers and the material conditions of publishing with literary-critical analysis of the "implied" reader inscribed in the novels themselves.

T. Wright
R4,227 Discovery Miles 42 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This new study deals with the whole range of Gaskell's fiction, approaching her as a deeply poetic novelist and short-story writer. Among topics covered are women and the creation of the self, death and personal integrity, the status of words as utterance and the shape and meaning of individual lives. While seeing her as a product of her age, Wright transcends narrow categorisations of her work to read her 'whole' as a subtle exponent of the values of a humane realism.

Spirit and Scripture - Exploring a Pneumatic Hermeneutic (Hardcover, New): Kevin L. Spawn, Archie T Wright Spirit and Scripture - Exploring a Pneumatic Hermeneutic (Hardcover, New)
Kevin L. Spawn, Archie T Wright
R4,698 Discovery Miles 46 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book considers the academic treatment of biblical interpretation in the renewal movement, the fastest growing tradition in Christendom today.

The initial chapter surveys the history of biblical interpretation in the renewal tradition and provides a conceptual basis for the book. In Part II, six renewal scholars outline a proposal for the future of biblical hermeneutics in the tradition. These authors address certain key questions. What is the role of the Holy Spirit in biblical interpretation? What are the distinctive presuppositions, methods and goals of renewal biblical hermeneutics? Three prominent biblical scholars ( Craig G. Bartholomew, James D.G. Dunn, R. Walter L. Moberly ) respond to the proposals outlined above. These critical responses deepen the examination of renewal biblical hermeneutics as well as increase its appeal to biblical and theological scholars in general.

The final chapteroffers asynthesis and evaluation ofthe accomplishments of the discussion, as well as anassessment ofthe state of the discipline with an eye toward the future.

Payam Sheikhattari, Michael T Wright, Gillian B. Silver, Cyrilla van der Donk, Bas van Lanen
R1,029 Discovery Miles 10 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An invaluable tool for health and social work students and professionals who want to improve their practice through collaborative research with patients, clients, and colleagues. Throughout history, some of the most prominent contributors to health and social sciences have been men and women comfortable with both practice and academia. But today, research in health-related fields is increasingly conducted in specialized settings by people who are first and foremost researchers. Critics bemoan this loss of practice-based research, long considered a vital part of the contribution that doctors, nurses, public health workers, and social workers can make both to their field and the communities in which they work. Unfortunately, the explosion of new discoveries in health-related fields, along with the exponential increase in the amount of knowledge being produced and the growing demands of practice, have caused both the production and application of knowledge to become highly specialized and increasingly complex. This has resulted in a widening gap between research and practice. Recognizing the need for a guide to this type of research, Practitioner Research for Social Work, Nursing, and the Health Professions is a thoroughly reimagined version of a book originally published in 2011 in the Netherlands. Aimed at American practitioners, it is a highly practical guide for anyone in social work, nursing, and other health care and social welfare settings. Its seven-step Practitioner Research Method offers readers a tried-and-true approach to conducting research in their own work environments, and the authors use real-world examples to highlight strategies for overcoming barriers and incorporating research. While leading practitioners through each stage of the research process, the authors explain in detail how to apply a variety of field-tested tools and techniques. A unique and indispensable resource for students in undergraduate and graduate research courses, as well as for seasoned professionals who seek a practical guide for developing and implementing their own research projects in social work, nursing, and the health professions, this book is also the first textbook to introduce the concept and practice of practitioner research to an American audience.

Party and State in Post-Mao China (Paperback): T. Wright Party and State in Post-Mao China (Paperback)
T. Wright
R498 Discovery Miles 4 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent decades, China has become a quasi-capitalist economic powerhouse. Yet it continues to be ruled by the same Communist Party-dominated government that has been in power since 1949. But how has China s political system achieved such longevity? And what does its stability tell us about the future of authoritarian versus liberal democratic governance? In this detailed analysis of the deeply intertwined relationship between the ruling Communist Party and governing state, noted China expert Teresa Wright provides insightful answers to these important questions. Though many believe that the Chinese party-state has maintained its power despite its communist and authoritarian features, Wright argues that the key to its sustained success lies in its careful safeguarding of some key communist and authoritarian characteristics, while simultaneously becoming more open and responsive to public participation. She contends that China s post-Mao party-state compares well to different forms of political rule, including liberal democratic government. It has fulfilled the necessary functions of a stable governing regime: satisfying key demographic groups and responding to public grievances; maintaining economic stability and growth; and delivering public services - without any real reduction in CCP power and influence. Questioning current understandings of the nature, strengths, and weaknesses of democracy and authoritarianism, this thought-provoking book will be essential reading for all students and scholars of Chinese politics and international relations.

With support from the University of Iowa and the Office of Naval Research. a small conference on order restricted inference was held at the University of Iowa in Iowa City in April of 1981. There were twenty-one participants. mostly from the midwest. and eleven talks were presented. A highlight of the conference was a talk by D. J. Bartholomew on. "Reflections on the past and thoughts about the future. " The conference was especially valuable because it brought together researchers who were thinking about related problems. A small conference on a limited topic is one of the best ways to stimulate research and facilitate collaboration. Because of the success of the first conference. a second conference was organized and held in September of 1985. This second conference was made possible again by support from the Office of Naval Research under Department of the Navy Contract NOOOI4-85-0161 and the University of Iowa. There were thirty-five participants and twenty presentations on a wide variety of topics dealing with order restricted inference at the second conference. This volume is a collection of fourteen of those presentations. By collecting together and organizing the fundamental results in order restricted inference in Statistical Inference under Order Restrictions. R. E. Barlow. D. J. Bartholomew. J. M. Bremner and H. D. Brunk have done much to stimulate research in this area. and so we wish to express our gratitude to them first.
