A History of the World (According to Cats!) (Paperback): Kimberlie Hamilton A History of the World (According to Cats!) (Paperback)
Kimberlie Hamilton; Illustrated by Jocelyn Kao
R307 Discovery Miles 3 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A cat's-eye view of history! Discover secrets, stories and facts about history’s most fascinating felines! Young historians may never look at the past - or cats! - in quite the same way again. Cats have prowled Earth for millennia, yet the history of the world has always been told through the eyes of humans. But now it's time to - finally! - set the record straight and uncover the key role that cats have played in shaping the course of history. Did you know that ancient Egyptians loved cats so much that they had special laws to protect them? Or that Isaac Newton's cat helped him develop the theory of gravity? How about that Féliette, a French street cat, was the first cat to go into space in 1963? A History of the World (According to Cats!) introduces us to fur-raising facts and adventures from around the world and across the centuries. Discover unknown stories about real-life felines, including WWII heroes, courageous adventurers and even an astrocat that travelled in space (and made it back to Earth to tell the tale), this book places cats as the heroes of their own stories. Full of real-life stories, with all the boring stuff left out, this book takes a look at the world's history through feline eyes.

R2,661 Discovery Miles 26 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings film adaptation of literature to bear on the question of how nineteenth-century imperial ideologies of progress continue to inform power inequalities in a global capitalist age. Not simply the promotion of general betterment for all, improvement in the British colonial context licensed a superior "master race" to "uplift" its colonized populations-morally, socially, and economically. This book argues that, on the one hand, film adaptations of nineteenth-century novels reveal the arrogance and coercive intentions that underpin contemporary notions of development, humanitarianism, and modernity-improvement's post-Victorian guises. On the other hand, the book also argues that the films use their nineteenth-century source texts to criticize these same legacies of imperialism. By bringing together film adaptation, postcolonial theory, and literary studies, the book demonstrates that adaptation, as both method and cultural product, provides a way to engage with the baggage of ideological heritage in our contemporary global media environment.

White Before Whiteness in the Late Middle Ages: Wan-Chuan Kao White Before Whiteness in the Late Middle Ages
Wan-Chuan Kao
R1,615 Discovery Miles 16 150 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This groundbreaking book analyses premodern whiteness as operations of fragility, precarity and racialicity across bodily and nonsomatic figurations. It argues that while whiteness participates in the history of racialisation in the late medieval West, it does not denote skin tone alone. The ‘before’ of whiteness, presupposing essence and teleology, is less a retro-futuristic temporisation – one that simultaneously looks backward and faces forward – than a discursive figuration of how white becomes whiteness. Fragility delineates the limits of ruling ideologies in performances of mourning as self-defence against perceived threats to subjectivity and desire; precarity registers the ruptures within normative values by foregrounding the unmarked vulnerability of the body politic and the violence of cultural aestheticisation; and racialicity attends to the politics of recognition and the technologies of enfleshment at the systemic edge of life and nonlife. -- .

Wenli Tsou, Shin-Mei Kao
R4,874 Discovery Miles 48 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents the multiple facets of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in higher education across various academic disciplines, an area that is expected to grow constantly in response to the competitive global higher education market. The studies presented were conducted in various EMI classrooms, with data collected from observing and documenting the teaching activities, and from interviewing or surveying EMI participants. Through data analysis and synthesis, cases across disciplines - from engineering, science, technology, business, social science, medical science, design and arts, to tourism and leisure service sectors - are used to illustrate the various EMI curriculum designs and classroom practices. Although the cases described are limited to Taiwanese institutions, the book bridges the gap between planning and executing EMI programs across academic domains for policy makers, administrators, content teachers, and teacher trainers throughout Asia.

R4,216 Discovery Miles 42 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This second edition systematically presents the underlying theory, model development, and applications of network Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). It discusses the models used to measure the efficiency of systems in specific network structures and introduces readers to the latest applications. It demonstrates how the “network DEA” approach helps identify and manage the specific components that cause inefficiencies in the overall system. The existing models for measuring the efficiency of systems in specific network structures are also discussed, and the relationships between system efficiency and component efficiency are explored. Moreover, the book provides an advanced exposition on performance evaluation of systems with network structures. It explores the networked nature of most production and operation systems, and explains why network analyses are necessary. Accordingly, the book will inspire new research and applications based on the state of the art. In this new edition, the latest research advances and discoveries are discussed. Two new chapters on Linkage Efficiency and External and Internal Evaluations have been added.  This book is mainly aimed at researchers and graduate students who are interested in performance evaluation, DEA, and multi-criteria decision analysis. Practitioners who want to measure the performance of production, operation, or any type of decision-making units will also find it useful.

This book highlights the rapidly developing field of advanced optical methods for structural and functional brain imaging. As is known, the brain is the most poorly understood organ of a living body. It is indeed the most complex structure in the known universe and, thus, mapping of the brain has become one of the most exciting frontlines of contemporary research. Starting from the fundamentals of the brain, neurons and synapses, this book presents a streamlined and focused coverage of the core principles, theoretical and experimental approaches, and state-of-the-art applications of most of the currently used imaging methods in brain research. It presents contributions from international leaders on different photonics-based brain imaging modalities and techniques. Included are comprehensive descriptions of many of the technology driven spectacular advances made over the past few years that have allowed novel insights of the structural and functional details of neurons. The book is targeted at researchers, engineers and scientists who are working in the field of brain imaging, neuroscience and connectomics. Although this book is not intended to serve as a textbook, it will appeal to undergraduate students engaged in the specialization of brain imaging.
