There has been recent rapid progress in the transformation of plants with foreign DNA, making use either of the natural routes of genetic invasion that viruses and bacteria have developed, or of chemical, mechanical and electrical tricks to make plant protoplast membranes permeable to nucleic acids. Genes integrated into plant virus genomes can be carried systemi cally from the initial site of infection into the rest of the plant. Genes placed between the borders of Agrobacterium tumefaciens T-DNA can be transferred into single cells or plant tissue, which then divides to produce wound calli, or as in the case of an Agrobacterium rhizogenes infection, grow out into new roots. Calli and roots can be grown into whole plants. If virus genomes are placed between the T-DNA borders, a very effective infectious route, termed "agroinfection," is established. Once inside a pro toplast, DNA finds its way into the nucleus where it can finally integrate into the resident chromosome and be expressed. Whether it can also find its way into chloroplasts is not yet clear, but at least translation products can be targeted into this organelle. Regeneration of whole organisms from single cells is a special feature of plants and offers a unique tool to study genes in a multicellular organism. In addition, as in animal cells, transcription and translation of trans forming genes can be studied in plant cells during "transient expression.""

A recent volume of this series (Signals and Signal Transduction Pathways in Plants (K. Palme, ed.) Plant Molecular Biology 26, 1237-1679) described the relay races by which signals are transported in plants from the sites of stimuli to the gene expression machinery of the cell. Part of this machinery, the transcription apparatus, has been well studied in the last two decades, and many important mechanisms controlling gene expression at the transcriptional level have been elucidated. However, control of gene expression is by no means complete once the RNA has been produced. Important regulatory devices determine the maturation and usage of mRNA and the fate of its translation product. Post-transcriptional regulation is especially important for generating a fast response to environmental and intracellular signals. This book summarizes recent progress in the area of post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in plants. 18 chapters of the book address problems of RNA processing and stability, regulation of translation, protein folding and degradation, as well as intracellular and cell-to-cell transport of proteins and nucleic acids. Meister (2010, S.7) betont, dass in gegenwartigen Gesellschaftsdiagnosen immer wieder auf den hohen gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Einfluss von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien hingewiesen wird. Experten gehen aktuell davon aus, dass in spatestens zehn Jahren 95 Prozent der erwachsenen Bevolkerung in Deutschland, Europa und den USA das Internet und seine Dienste aktiv und regelmassig nutzen (Munchener Kreis e.V., 2009, S. 14). Wenn man Medien wie Fernsehen, Radio oder Zeitschriften aufmerksam verfolgt, gibt es wohl keines, das nicht auf das Internet verweist, und plakative Werbekampagnen thematisieren kostengunstige Internet-Flatrates. Auf Basis dieser beispielhaft thematisierten Alltagswahrnehmungen konnte man den Schluss ziehen, dass heute eigentlich jeder "online" sein konnte, musste und eigentlich auch sollte. Recherchiert man etwas intensiver, findet man aber u.a. die Initiative "geteilt.de," die sich als Interessenvertretung fur Burgerinnen und Burger versteht, die "(...) uber einen unzureichenden Zugang zum Internet verfugen und so vom gesellschaftlichen Leben zunehmend ausgeschlossen sind."
