There has been recent rapid progress in the transformation of
plants with foreign DNA, making use either of the natural routes of
genetic invasion that viruses and bacteria have developed, or of
chemical, mechanical and electrical tricks to make plant protoplast
membranes permeable to nucleic acids. Genes integrated into plant
virus genomes can be carried systemi cally from the initial site of
infection into the rest of the plant. Genes placed between the
borders of Agrobacterium tumefaciens T-DNA can be transferred into
single cells or plant tissue, which then divides to produce wound
calli, or as in the case of an Agrobacterium rhizogenes infection,
grow out into new roots. Calli and roots can be grown into whole
plants. If virus genomes are placed between the T-DNA borders, a
very effective infectious route, termed "agroinfection," is
established. Once inside a pro toplast, DNA finds its way into the
nucleus where it can finally integrate into the resident chromosome
and be expressed. Whether it can also find its way into
chloroplasts is not yet clear, but at least translation products
can be targeted into this organelle. Regeneration of whole
organisms from single cells is a special feature of plants and
offers a unique tool to study genes in a multicellular organism. In
addition, as in animal cells, transcription and translation of
trans forming genes can be studied in plant cells during "transient
expression.""
A recent volume of this series (Signals and Signal Transduction
Pathways in Plants (K. Palme, ed.) Plant Molecular Biology 26,
1237-1679) described the relay races by which signals are
transported in plants from the sites of stimuli to the gene
expression machinery of the cell. Part of this machinery, the
transcription apparatus, has been well studied in the last two
decades, and many important mechanisms controlling gene expression
at the transcriptional level have been elucidated. However, control
of gene expression is by no means complete once the RNA has been
produced. Important regulatory devices determine the maturation and
usage of mRNA and the fate of its translation product.
Post-transcriptional regulation is especially important for
generating a fast response to environmental and intracellular
signals. This book summarizes recent progress in the area of
post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in plants. 18
chapters of the book address problems of RNA processing and
stability, regulation of translation, protein folding and
degradation, as well as intracellular and cell-to-cell transport of
proteins and nucleic acids. Several chapters are devoted to the
processes taking place in plant organelles.
"Plant Virus-Host Interaction" contains cutting-edge research in
plant molecular virology, including pathogenic viroids and
transport by insect vectors, interference with transmission to
control viruses, and synergism, with pivotal coverage of RNA
silencing and the counter-defensive strategies used by viruses to
overcome the silencing response in plants.
With a clear focus on plant virus evolution, including
quantitative and population genetics, "Plant Virus-Host
Interaction" provides insights on the major factors favoring
disease emergence, such as genetic change in pathogen and host
populations and changes in host ecology and environment. The book
also examines socioeconomic implications of widespread plant viral
agents. Contributions from leading experts around the globe provide
varied perspectives, while comprehensive coverage ensures a
complete look at this exciting field.

Plant Virus-Host Interaction: Molecular Approaches and Viral
Evolution, Second Edition, provides comprehensive coverage of
molecular approaches for virus-host interaction. The book contains
cutting-edge research in plant molecular virology, including
pathogenic viroids and transport by insect vectors, interference
with transmission to control viruses, synergism with pivotal
coverage of RNA silencing, and the counter-defensive strategies
used by viruses to overcome the silencing response in plants. This
new edition introduces new, emerging proteins involved in
host-virus interactions and provides in-depth coverage of plant
virus genes' interactions with host, localization and expression.
With contributions from leading experts, this is a comprehensive
reference for plant virologists, molecular biologists and others
interested in characterization of plant viruses and disease
management.

Recherchiert man etwas

Organisation, Note: 1,0, FernUniversitat Hagen (Fakultat fur
Bildungscontrolling-Konzeptionen deutscher Unternehmen zeichnen
sich durch eine stark wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Ausrichtung aus,
wodurch bildungs- und lerntheoretisch begrundete Potenziale des
Bildungscontrollings zur Forderung des Lebenslangen Lernens bislang
weitgehend ungenutzt bleiben." Die der Hausarbeit zu Grunde
liegende Forschungsfrage lautet dementsprechend: Durch welche
