Mapping the Magazine - Comparative studies in magazine journalism (Paperback): Tim Holmes Mapping the Magazine - Comparative studies in magazine journalism (Paperback)
Tim Holmes
R1,642 Discovery Miles 16 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The media and more recently journalism have provided rich areas of study for many years but magazines, perhaps the most prolific single medium, have been largely ignored. Mapping The Magazine aims to redress the balance with an unprecedented collection of original, scholarly, detailed but wide-ranging examinations of the magazine form. Drawing on a variety of theoretical approaches and a wealth of titles from around the world, the contributions demonstrate just how significant the magazine has been, and continues to be, in the realm of journalism and cultural production. From the science magazines of the Victorian era to women's magazines of South Africa and Israel, via rock music and photojournalism past and present, the material in Mapping The Magazine illuminates and explores the all-encompassing, global and historical nature of the subject matter. Some of the most notable names in the field of magazine studies, including John Hartley, Sammye Johnson, David Abrahamson, Bethan Benwell, and Patrick Roessler contribute research based analyses of various aspects of magazine journalism from around the globe and across a wide historical span. This book will help to establish the magazine as a medium which is not only suitable for research but which also opens up a huge new field of possibilities. This book was previously published as a special issue of Journalism Studies

Magazine Journalism (Paperback): Tim Holmes, Liz Nice Magazine Journalism (Paperback)
Tim Holmes, Liz Nice
R1,095 Discovery Miles 10 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"For those of us who long ago experienced the magazine love-bite and have been battling the prejudice and scant attention shown this beautiful medium ever since, here at last is the book to set the record straight." - Nicholas Brett, Deputy Managing Director, BBC Magazines "At a time when magazines are undergoing active redefinition, this book represents a welcome intervention. It engages with a host of pressing issues in a manner alert to professional priorities while, at the same time, encouraging new ways of thinking about the challenges shaping this fast-moving field. Holmes and Nice are trustworthy guides, taking the reader on what proves to be a fascinating journey." - Stuart Allan, Professor of Journalism, Bournemouth University Magazines are the most successful media format ever to have existed: so begins Magazine Journalism as it traces how magazines arose from their earliest beginnings in 1665 to become the ubiquitous format we know today. This book combats the assumptions among media academics as well as journalists that magazines somehow don't count, and presents a compelling assessment of the development and innovation at the heart of magazine publishing. In magazines we find some of the key debates in journalism, from the genesis of 'marketing to the reader' to feminist history, subcultures and tabloidization. Embedding these questions in a thoroughly historical framework, Holmes and Nice argue for an understanding of magazine journalism as essential in the media landscape. Moving beyond the semiotic and textual analysis so favoured by critics of the past, the authors complete the story with an exploration of the production and consumption of magazines. Drawing on interviews with more than 30 magazine journalists across the industry, what emerges is a story of resilience, innovation and a unique ability to embrace new markets and readerships. Magazine Journalism takes the reader to the heart of key questions in the past, present and future of journalism and is essential reading for students across journalism and the creative industries.

The title of this book - Life Without Edges - is the best way I can describe what my life became following a very damaging and vicious attack when I was a teenager. The story unfolds on a train trip across Australia when, quite by chance, I met a trained counselor with whom I connected. We talked for hours whilst traveling through the desert-like interior of this vast continent, my life story unfolding day by day, revealing a series of emotionally damaging traumas. Firstly my dad abandoned us when I was 6, leaving me vulnerable to the attentions of a pedophile at age 7. When I was 10 my granddad died in front of me from a massive heart attack and then the most damaging event of all happened when, at 16, I was viciously raped by 2 men in a public toilet. It was this last traumatic experience that sent me into what I term my '16 years in the wilderness'. I now know that I was suffering from 'post traumatic stress disorder' for all those years and suffered in silence until the breakdown forced me to seek help by speaking out and reconnecting with people. This story is basically one of recovery and how I managed to overcome my fear of people and crawl my way back to reality, face my demons and come to terms with all the traumatic events of my early life. A professionally-trained therapist, who has worked in the industry for over 25 years, has added valuable insights throughout this book. She also wrote the chapter towards the end of the book entitled 'Reflections', which is a complete summary of all her ideas, plus a short, but insightful, chapter on how she has had interpreted my dreams. Her insights have been invaluable to me in helping me to understand the reasons why I withdrew into the isolation of my own fantasy world following the rape. Hopefully these insights will also assist you, the reader, to see the value of speaking out and sharing your experiences.

Beyond Faith and Reason (Hardcover): Tim Holmes Beyond Faith and Reason (Hardcover)
Tim Holmes
R787 Discovery Miles 7 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this second edition of the book that sought to answer the question 'What is identity?', Holmes brings you along a sometimes troubling journey of self analysis. Through provoking style and imagery, the reader is led from a survey of traditional and contemporary philosophy to a psychology of introspection. The primary goal remains a focus on the individual person's identity. Not only does the psychology presented allow for a delineation of the various elements of the personal psyche, but emerging alongside is a cogent epistemology of meaning and spiritual orientation in the world. The depths of existence and the self equally plumbed and artistically rendered in their transcendent ends.
