The label on your product is the most important document you
produce. Ask any customer; it is often the only communication they
have with you. This book is about getting your labeling and product
information right, and that is more important than getting
customers to buy your products. It is about ensuring that they buy
them again, and again. Written primarily for the fast moving
consumer goods industries such as food, chemicals, cosmetics and
health, this book is also essential reading for anyone involved in
label writing and design, or product information in any context.
Tony Holkham is a consultant providing expertise to a range of
industries. He has written in-house labeling manuals, published
articles and runs training courses on the subject.

I really shouldn't be here. The persistence with which the enemies
of my country in two world wars tried to eliminate my four
grandparents and two parents was astonishing. It was only my
forbears' resilience, bravery and determination to survive that
meant I could exist at all. As I am clearly am here, I believe I
owe it to these forbears, these remarkable people, that they are
remembered. Celebrated. If there are lessons to be learned from
their lives, they must be self-evident: I am no preacher, but a
family historian and writer. My grandfather Ernest Briggs fought on
the Somme in World War 1 and was an ARP warden in Manchester during
World War 2. He was no stranger to war. In 1928, Ernest and three
companions toured the battlefields of France and Belgium, and this
book is their account of that tour, with photographs taken at the
time. My wife and I undertook a similar journey in 1995 in their
memory, with additional photographs. The contrast between the two
tours could not be more stark. Our account is published in a
separate book: "Ernest Briggs & The Great War: Part 3." The
electronic version of this book was published in four parts due to
size limitations; this printed book covers Parts 1 and 2, and much
of Part 4, so even if you have bought any of the e-books, you might
like to have this printed version as well. During the compiling of
this book, which has taken 15 years, I have been constantly
reminded of what we owe to Ernest Briggs's generation, and of the
freedoms we enjoy today. And how, but for chance's strange
arithmetic, I really shouldn't be here. Net proceeds from this book
will go to the Royal British Legion and the Commonwealth War Graves
Commission. Net proceeds from all my wide range of books go to
charity, so you may find something else to interest you by entering
my name in the Amazon search box, and help some good causes at the
same time.
Tony Holkham's books range from business writing and private
writing tuition to consumer advice; from the countryside to
spring-cleaning; from World War 1 to fiction, verse and real-life
drama. Something for everyone A book about spring-cleaning?
Certainly. In the early 20th century, and before, it was common for
householders to compile notebooks of household hints and tips.
These would have been obtained from newspapers, magazine, product
labels or passed down by word of mouth. This little book is typical
of the period, and fascinating in its contents. Many of the entries
are recognisable, but many ingredients mentioned are no longer
obtainable - and in some cases, quite rightly so. The author Tony
Holkham is related to the original writer of the book, though he is
not quite sure how All he knows is that it is a book worth sharing;
many such household compendia will have been assigned to the bin,
especially with the arrival of the all-knowing internet and the
extinction of the phenomenon known as "spring-cleaning." The Briggs
Book gives a little insight into the lives of ordinary people
around 100 years ago: how hard they must have worked in the home,
and how difficult it was to obtain information to solve a variety
of problems, many of which are still irritations today.
