Taiwanese crime drama directed by Hsiao-hsien Hou. Set in 1980s Taipei, the film follows Lin (Lin Yang) as she struggles to keep her family from being torn apart. She spends her life working in KFC, attending night classes and obsessing over local gigolo Ah-sang (Fan Yang) whilst also trying to keep her younger siblings from becoming lost in a life of crime. Her mother and older brother are dead and her father (Fu-Sheng Tsui) works away from home, leaving Lin to care for her brother Lin Hsiao-fang (Jack Kao), who has become involved with a local gang, and her sister, who has recently turned to stealing. To get away from the perpetual troubles around her, Lin escapes to a world of fantasy where she imagines herself as the title character from her favourite manga series - 'Daughter of the Nile'.
