No School Left Behind - Implementation of China’s New Mathematics Curriculum Reform (2000–2020): Wei Gao, Xian-Wei Liu No School Left Behind - Implementation of China’s New Mathematics Curriculum Reform (2000–2020)
Wei Gao, Xian-Wei Liu
R1,254 Discovery Miles 12 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on the fieldwork carried out at two elementary schools, Merits School and Pioneer School, in northeastern China, the monograph details how local schools enacted the New Mathematics Curriculum Reform that was launched in early 2000. The trajectory of the reform implementation at each school was plotted out. Both schools resorted to a long-standing quality control mechanism, i.e., teaching norms, to operationalize the reform ideas. The mechanism functioned by placing teachers under measurable supervision and evaluation aligned with the reform. The schools responded to the reform following school people’s raising practical concerns, as well as the established school culture. Merits School arrived at a "two-faced strategy" to cope with the reform. Pioneer School managed to maintain a balance between promoting reform pedagogy and maintaining good test rankings. Both schools marginally involved parents in the implementation of the reform. This study suggests that to achieve success, reformers need to place equal emphasis on the transformation of teachers as well as local policymakers. This book enriches the existing literature on the implementation of mathematics curriculum reform at the school level and brings insights into the schools’ implementation decisions, which will appeal to policymakers, curriculum researchers and administrators.

Disability, Sexuality, and Gender in Asia - Intersectionality, Human Rights, and the Law: Wanhong Zhang, Elisabeth Bjørnstøl,... Disability, Sexuality, and Gender in Asia - Intersectionality, Human Rights, and the Law
Wanhong Zhang, Elisabeth Bjørnstøl, Peng Ding, Wei Gao, Hanxu Liu, …
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book introduces experiential knowledge of the intersectionality of disability, sexuality, and gender equality issues. Scholars and disabled persons’ organizations in different Asian countries such as China, Vietnam, Myanmar, Nepal, and Japan have contributed to the book. It is a preliminary introduction of the frontline practice of Asian disability activism and the experience of women and LGBTIQ people with disabilities. It presents the direct participation of disability advocates in mapping how both women with disabilities and LGBTIQ individuals with disabilities realize their rights such as identity, work rights, personal safety, and sexual rights. Studies presented here explore the experience of empowering diverse disability groups and advocating for equality and non-discrimination. It explains how to use the leverage of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) for further human rights campaigns in a broader context for disadvantaged groups. This collection is the product of a participatory research project, which aims to increase the capabilities of local disabled persons’ organizations and NGOs in utilizing human rights laws and encourage dialogue and collaboration between academia, people with disabilities, and human rights advocates. It will be essential reading for academics, researchers, policy-makers, and campaign groups.

Precision Control of Planar Motion Stages (Paperback): Wei Gao, Songyi Dian Precision Control of Planar Motion Stages (Paperback)
Wei Gao, Songyi Dian
R1,555 Discovery Miles 15 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Planar motion stages actuated by planar motors, which can generate XY in-plane motions, have the advantages of direct drive, high speed, non-contact levitation and simple structure. Such kinds of stages, however, are sensitive to interferences between axes, modeling uncertainties and disturbances because there are no mechanical restrictions in the XY plane. Conventional stage controllers based on classical control methods cannot achieve satisfied positioning performance for the stage. This book presents the design and implementation of precision motion control strategies for the planar motion stages. For ultraprecision positioning applications, dynamics modeling, decoupled control, sliding mode observer- based compensation and performance evaluation for the surface motor-driven planar motion stage are presented. For precision positioning applications, dynamic modeling, sliding mode observer-based control and hybrid sensorless control for the Sawyer motor-based planar motion stage are discussed. The authors believe this book can be a useful reference on precision motion control of planar motion stages or other types of precision positioning systems.

Social Media Content Analysis: Natural Language Processing And Beyond (Hardcover): Kam-Fai Wong, Wei Gao, Ruifeng Xu, Wenjie Li Social Media Content Analysis: Natural Language Processing And Beyond (Hardcover)
Kam-Fai Wong, Wei Gao, Ruifeng Xu, Wenjie Li
R4,707 Discovery Miles 47 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Social media platforms have been ubiquitously used in our daily lives and are steadily transforming the ways people communicate, socialize and conduct business. However, the growing popularity of social media adversely leads to wild spread of unreliable information. This in turn inevitably creates serious pollution problem of the global social media environment, which is harmful against humanity. For example, President Donald Trump used social media strategically to win in the 2016 USA Presidential Election. But it was found that many messages he delivered over social media were unproven, if not untrue. This problem must be prevented at all cost and as soon as possible. Thus, analysis of social media content is a pressing issue. It is a timely and important research subject worldwide. However, the short and informal nature of social media messages renders conventional content analysis, which is based on natural language processing (NLP), ineffective. This volume consists of a collection of highly relevant scientific articles published by the authors in different international conferences and journals, and is divided into three distinct parts: (I) search and filtering; (II) opinion and sentiment analysis; and (III) event detection and summarization. This book presents the latest advances in NLP technologies for social media content analysis, especially content on microblogging platforms such as Twitter and Weibo.

Boundary Element Programming in Mechanics (Paperback): Xiao-Wei Gao, Trevor G. Davies Boundary Element Programming in Mechanics (Paperback)
Xiao-Wei Gao, Trevor G. Davies
R1,677 Discovery Miles 16 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nonlinear stress analysis (a branch of solid mechanics) is an essential feature in the design of such diverse structures as aircraft, bridges, machines, and dams. Computational techniques have become vital tools in dealing with the complex, time-consuming problems associated with nonlinear stress analysis. Although finite element techniques are widely used, boundary element methods (BEM) offer a powerful alternative, especially in tackling problems of three-dimensional plasticity. This 2002 book describes the application of BEM in solid mechanics, beginning with basic theory and then explaining the numerical implementation of BEM in nonlinear stress analysis. The authors have also developed a BEM source code for use by the reader, which is available on the book's companion website. This book will be especially useful to stress analysts in industry, research workers in the field of computational plasticity, and postgraduate students taking courses in engineering mechanics.
