Minority invisibility has gone unnoticed in the communication discipline. It denies the existence of racial problems by consciously or unconsciously downplaying, ignoring, or over-simplifying the issues. This is evidenced from the claims of color-blindness and reverse discrimination, the belief in model minorities, and exaggerated, negative, or purposeful racial displays that permeate American culture. Using in-depth interviews with Asian-American professionals from various metropolitan areas, this study investigates these professionals' perceptions on minority invisibility and model minority status. It explores Asian Americans' ethnic consciousness on four levels, discussing how the group perceives their individual invisibility, their group members' invisibility, the invisibility of other American co-cultural groups, and finally their expectations in changing minority invisibility in the United States. The work considers diverse viewpoints on minority invisibility, model minority, satisfaction and dissatisfaction with mainstream American culture, and co-cultural ethnic relations. This study is useful to graduate and undergraduate students and researchers with an interest in race relations, Asian-American studies, co-cultural theory, and intercultural communication studies.

Symposium S, 'Nanostructured Metal Oxides for Advanced Applications', was held April 1-5 at the 2013 MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco, California. Metal oxides represent an appealing and assorted class of materials, whose properties cover the entire range from metals to semiconductors to insulators and almost all aspects of material science, chemistry and physics in a very broad application area. In the past few years, progress has been made on the synthesis, structural, physical, and chemical characterization of self-assembled and hierarchically assembled metal oxide nanostructures that exhibit size-dependent properties. This book details the principles, methodology, and engineering science basis that undergird the direct cell writing fabrication process development and adaptation of microfluidic devices for the creation of a in vivo simulating drug screening model. This model involves the combinatorial setup of an automated syringe- based, layered direct cell writing bioprinting process with soft lithographic micro-patterning techniques to fabricate a microscale in vitro device housing a chamber of bioprinted three-dimensional microorgan that biomimics the cell's natural microenvironment for enhanced performance and functionality.

Tissue engineering has been redefined as "the use of physical, chemical, biological and engineering processes to control and direct the aggregate behaviors of cells." This offers tremendous opportunities for designing in vitro physiological models to study disease pathogenesis, inventing cell-based therapeutics in clinical applications and developing novel pharmaceutical methods for reducing the use of animals in drug testing. However, while using biomanufacturing processes, cells are subjected to an array of mechanical forces which may injure it. While experimental studies have been conducted for specific bio-fabrication systems to understand cell responses, an engineering model is also needed that can be used to predict the effect of mechanical forces on cells. A multi scale modeling approach for the analysis of cell damage in bioprinted tissue constructs is presented here. The approach includes analysis of the tissue constructs at a macro scale model, developing a multi-cellular scale model and a single cell model wherein the microstructures of the cell like the nucleus and the cytoplasm have been incorporated.
