This edited volume gathers corpus-based studies on topics including
English grammar and discourses on media and health, mainly from a
systemic functional linguistics (SFL) perspective, in order to
reveal the potential of SFL, which has been emphasized by Halliday.
Various other perspectives, such as philosophy, statistics, genre
studies, etc. are also included to promote SFL's potential
interaction with other theories. Though they employ a diverse range
of theoretical perspectives, all the chapters focus on exploring
language in use with the corpus method. The studies collected here
are all original, unpublished research articles that address
significant questions, deepen readers' understanding of SFL, and
promote its potential interaction with other theories. In addition,
they demonstrate the great potential that SFL holds for solving
language-related questions in a variety of discourses.
This monograph presents a reliable methodology for characterising
the energy and eco-efficiency of unit manufacturing processes. The
Specific Energy Consumption, SEC, will be identified as the key
indicator for the energy efficiency of unit processes. An empirical
approach will be validated on different machine tools and
manufacturing processes to depict the relationship between process
parameters and energy consumptions. Statistical results and
additional validation runs will corroborate the high level of
accuracy in predicting the energy consumption. In relation to the
eco-efficiency, the value and the associated environmental impacts
of manufacturing processes will also be discussed. The
interrelationship between process parameters, process value and the
associated environmental impact will be integrated in the
evaluation of eco-efficiency. The book concludes with a further
investigation of the results in order to develop strategies for
further efficiency improvement. The target audience primarily
comprises researchers and experts in the field, but the book may
also be beneficial for graduate students.

How Chinaâs economic development combines a veneer of
unprecedented progress with the increasingly despotic rule of
surveillance over all aspects of life Since the mid-2000s, the
Chinese state has increasingly shifted away from labor-intensive,
export-oriented manufacturing to a process of socioeconomic
development centered on science and technology. Ya-Wen Lei traces
the contours of this techno-developmental regime and its resulting
form of techno-state capitalism, telling the stories of those whose
lives have been transformedâfor better and worseâby Chinaâs
rapid rise to economic and technological dominance. Drawing on
groundbreaking fieldwork and a wealth of in-depth interviews with
managers, business owners, workers, software engineers, and local
government officials, Lei describes the vastly unequal values
assigned to economic sectors deemed âhigh-endâ versus
âlow-end,â and the massive expansion of technical and legal
instruments used to measure and control workers and capital. She
shows how Chinaâs rise has been uniquely shaped by its
time-compressed development, the complex relationship between the
nationâs authoritarian state and its increasingly powerful but
unruly tech companies, and an ideology that fuses nationalism with
high modernism, technological fetishism, and meritocracy. Some have
compared Chinaâs extraordinary transformation to Americaâs
Gilded Age. This provocative book reveals how it is more like a
gilded cage, one in which the Chinese state and tech capital are
producing rising inequality and new forms of social exclusion.
This book focuses on the reliability engineering of medical
devices, especially digital diagnosis and treatment equipment in
China. It details the professional technologies and application
methods of reliability design analysis, fault model analysis and

EMC design protection, material selection and control, and software
engineering and quality, this book provides professional and
technical ideas and methods of reliability for the quality problems
prone to occur in the field of medical devices, as well as method
guidance for readers. Meanwhile, it runs through the whole process
of design, engineering, testing, production and management of all
digital diagnosis and treatment equipment research and development
enterprises and even product R & D enterprises in the field of
medical devices. It is used as reading materials for personnel of
testing institutions and evaluation institutions in medical
devices.

In 2004, the microelectronics industry quietly ushered in the
Nanoelectronics Era with the mass production of sub-100nm node
devices. The current leading-edge semiconductor chips in mass
production - the so-called 90nm node devices - have a transistor
gate length of less than 50nm. This rapid technological advancement
in the semiconductor industry has been made possible by innovations
in materials employed in both transistor fabrication
(front-end-of-the-line, FEOL) and interconnect fabrication
(back-end-of-the-line, BEOL). The 90nm node BEOL features copper
(Cu) interconnects and dielectric materials with a low-dielectric
constant (k) of about 3.0. However, for the next generations of
65nm node and beyond, evolutionary and revolutionary innovations in
BEOL materials and processes are needed to fuel the continued,
healthy growth of the semiconductor. This book provides a forum to
exchange the latest advances in materials, processes, integration,
and reliability in advanced interconnects and packaging. The book
also addressed interconnects for emerging technologies, including
3D chip stacking and optical interconnects, as well as
interconnects for optoelectronics, plastic electronics and
molecular electronics.
Today's world is more interconnected and interdependent than ever
before. Within the context of globalisation and the associated
increased contact between diverse groups of people, the psychology
of culture is more relevant than ever. Asia-Pacific Perspectives on
Intercultural Psychology brings together leading researchers from
11 countries to showcase the innovative, evolving, and diverse
approaches that epitomise the development of the psychology of
culture across the Asia-Pacific region. The contributors provide a
range of examples of how different psychologies of culture can
inform engagements with a range of psychological issues. Central to
each chapter is the relationship between local cultures and ways of
being, and knowledge production practices, imported theories, and
methods from the global discipline. It is the resulting tensions
and opportunities for dialogue that are central to the further
development of intercultural psychology as a diverse scholarly
arena. This important work argues the case for a combination of
etic and emic approaches to theory, research, and practice in
psychology, that this is foundational to the development of
intercultural perspectives and more comprehensive understandings of
both the universal and local elements of human experience and
psychological phenomena today.

Globally, the number of elderly individuals is growing at an
unprecedented rate. Currently, eleven percent of the worldwide
population is 65 years and older. This number will more than double
to twenty-two percent (2 billion) by 2050. As the older population
continues its inexorable growth, so does the number of older adults
with mental health disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease,
depression, anxiety and schizophrenia. For example, the number of
individuals affected by dementia worldwide is expected to double
every twenty years to over 81 million by 2040. Depressive episodes
in later life are also prevalent, and depression is the leading
cause of disability in older adults worldwide. These mental
disorders lead to increased morbidity and mortality in older
adults, and often they can exact a negative toll on their family
members. To respond to the ageing world, this book sets out to help
researchers, policy makers, service providers, and students develop
their knowledge of the issues associated with ageing and mental
health throughout the world. Written by twenty-one gerontological
experts from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America, and
Oceania, this book provides an understanding of issues related to
ageing and mental health from global perspectives.

Since the mid-2000s, public opinion and debate in China have become
increasingly common and consequential, despite the ongoing
censorship of speech and regulation of civil society. How did this
happen? In The Contentious Public Sphere, Ya-Wen Lei shows how the
Chinese state drew on law, the media, and the Internet to further
an authoritarian project of modernization, but in so doing,
inadvertently created a nationwide public sphere in China--one the
state must now endeavor to control. Lei examines the influence this
unruly sphere has had on Chinese politics and the ways that the
state has responded. Using interviews, newspaper articles, online
texts, official documents, and national surveys, Lei shows that the
development of the public sphere in China has provided an
unprecedented forum for citizens to influence the public agenda,
demand accountability from the government, and organize around the
concepts of law and rights. She demonstrates how citizens came to
understand themselves as legal subjects, how legal and media
professionals began to collaborate in unexpected ways, and how
existing conditions of political and economic fragmentation created
unintended opportunities for political critique, particularly with
the rise of the Internet. The emergence of this public sphere--and
its uncertain future--is a pressing issue with important
implications for the political prospects of the Chinese people.
Investigating how individuals learn to use public discourse to
influence politics, The Contentious Public Sphere offers new
possibilities for thinking about the transformation of
state-society relations.
Thermal Energy Storage Analyses and Designs considers the
significance of thermal energy storage systems over other systems
designed to handle large quantities of energy, comparing storage
technologies and emphasizing the importance, advantages,
practicalities, and operation of thermal energy storage for large
quantities of energy production. Including chapters on thermal
storage system configuration, operation, and delivery processes, in
particular the flow distribution, flow arrangement, and control for
the thermal charge and discharge processes for single or multiple
thermal storage containers, the book is a useful reference for
engineers who design, install, or maintain storage systems.

A recent trend in networked control systems is to interconnect the
distributed elements by means of a multipoint broadcast network,
instead of using the traditional point-to-point links. Within
industrial communication systems, industrial networks are specially
intended for the interconnection of process controllers, sensors,
and actuators, at the lower levels of the factory automation
hierarchy. It is known that time constraints are more stringent as
we go down in the automation hierarchy. In this book, we consider
the application of networked control system in its industrial
environment. Some factors such as message cycle delay, the access
and queuing delays, the transmission time (frame
length/transmission rate), and the protocol processing time all
have effects on control performance.
Since the beginning of the 1980s, configuration software has
developed and evolved. It should be said that configuration
software, as a kind of application software, rose with the
development of personal computers. The development of configuration
software is closely related to the development of the industrial
control system. With the rapid development of modern industries,
the production process continues to expand in scale, and its
complexity is increasing. The process of industrial production is
now being transformed from labour intensive, equipment intensive,
and information intensive to a more knowledge intensive fashion.
Configuration software as a product appeared in the early 80s, and
was widely used in the late 80s. But before the mid-90s, the
configuration software application was not universal. With the
applications of industrial control systems widely used around the
world, in the face of larger and more complex control systems,
users have become gradually more aware of original host computer
programming. This mode is time-consuming. The loss outweighs the
gains. At the same time, MIS (management information systems) and
CIMS (computer integrated manufacturing systems), and a large
number of applications require an industrial site for enterprise
production, management, and decision-making to provide more
detailed and in-depth data in order to optimize the production and
operation of enterprises in all aspects.
This book provides comprehensive research on the communication
performance of a real time industrial fieldbus. Several important
topics were investigated, such as how to ensure the transmission of
real-time messages within a maximum bound time along the industrial
fieldbus mentioned in this book. Profibus, FF, WorldFIP and CAN are
all well-proved solutions for real-time communication systems,
based on a simplified timed token (TT) protocol and bus scheduling.
The following subjects dealing with the real-time communication
performance of an industrial fieldbus were investigated and studied
in this book. Features: 1) Concept and essentiality of timed-token
MAC protocol with the effect of its parameter in real-time
characteristics; 2) MAC mechanism in Profibus, timing analysis,
optimization of acyclic bandwidth allocation, and the approaches to
guarantee the real-time behaviour of the Profibus protocol; 3)
Principles of acyclic data communication, and analysis of the delay
performance of time-critical and time-available data in FF fieldbus
data link layer token-passing service; 4) Communication models in
WorldFIP network, Producer/Distributor/Consumer concept, response
time analysis for sporadic traffic and investigation of the
worst-case response time issues; 5) Communication mechanism in CAN
fieldbus with its performance analysis and evaluation in real-time
applications. The academic level of this book is relatively high
and professional. It is suitable as a reference for university
graduates, lecturers and researchers.
