Walapai (Hualapai), a language of the Yuman group (Hokan stock), is spoken in Northern Arizona. The volume contains texts of various genres - mythical tales, stories from everyday life, oral histories - which were collected by the author in the late '50s and early '60s. As in the case of Winter's earlier publications, the texts are presented in a morphologically analyzed form and are provided with full translations.

Volume 1, The Aborigines of Sakhalin, contains translations into English of the Polish, Russian and Japanese material on, for example, the history, folklore, economic life, shamanism, sexual life, medical anthropology, and the bear festival which has been published between 1898 and 1936, mainly in local journals which are hardly accessible today. English, French and German articles appear in the original language

Bantawa, spoken in Eastern Nepal, is the most widely used of the Rai languages, an important subgroup of the Kiranti group of Tibeto-Burman languages. This dictionary, based on material obtained in the context of the Linguistic Survey of Nepal, concise though it is, stands out as the most voluminous of the few dictionaries and word lists for Rai languages that were hitherto published with English equivalents of native forms provided. The fact that both a Bantawa-English and an English-Bantawa part give access to the forms makes the book an important research tool for specialists in Kiranti languages as well as for scholars concerned with Tibeto-Burman and Nepal studies in general.
