Americans rank crime among the most urgent of social concerns. Overflowing prisons and public outcry have led many to propose that the criminal justice system could control crime more effectively by focusing on dangerous offenders.

Recent social studies have suggested that serious criminality is highly concentrated and that high-rate offenders can be distinguished from others on the basis of prior criminal conduct, drug abuse, and employment record. Such studies urge judges to shift from rehabilitative sentencing to selective incapacitation, with longer prison sentences for convicted criminals who are deemed unusually dangerous. In response to these recommendations, some prosecutors' offices have established career criminal units designed to assure that repeat offenders will be prosecuted to the full measure of the law. Some police departments are experimenting with "perpetrator-oriented patrols" targeted on suspected high-rate offenders.

The authors of this major book in criminal jurisprudence describe and analyze the intellectual and social challenge posed to public officials by this new thrust in criminal justice policy. They develop a framework for evaluating policies that focus on dangerous offenders. They first examine the general issues that arise as society considers the benefits and risks of concentrating on a particular category of criminals. They then outline how that approach might work at each stage of the criminal justice system--sentencing, pretrial detention, prosecution, and investigation.

This cogently argued book provides much needed guidance on the crucial questions of whether sharpened attention to dangerous offenders is just, whether such a policy can be effective in managing the problem of crime, which applications seem particularly valuable, what the long-term risks to social institutions are, and what uncertainties must be monitored and resolved as the policy evolves.

Genomics of Tropical Crop Plants (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Paul H. Moore Genomics of Tropical Crop Plants (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Paul H. Moore; Foreword by D. Delmer; Edited by Ray Ming
R5,549 Discovery Miles 55 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is a critical need for a book to assess the genomics of tropical plant species. Early genomics successes resulted in tremendous advances in high throughput technologies and data management that greatly reduced costs and increased rates of data accumulation. In addition, the early plant successes showed that, although Arabidopsis can be a reasonable model for dicots and rice a model for monocots, there is a real need for species-specific genomic information if it is to be used for crop improvement. Thus began programs for developing the genomics of numerous plant crop species with considerable emphasis on tropical plant species. Reasons for this emphasis are that the tropics are recognized as the regions of origin of a large part of genetic diversity with genes and phenotypes not found in temperate plants, and that human population growth is destroying much of the tropical environment and with it the genetic diversity located there. Remarkable genomics progress has been made in several tropical crop plants, noticeably sorghum and papaya, both of which are undergoing whole genome sequencing. International consortia or networks have been established for a number of tropical crops to mobilize and coordinate resources and efforts towards generating genomic tools and eventual sequencing of the genome for basic biological research and crop improvement. These crops include sugarcane, banana, coffee, citrus, millet, cacao, and peanut. The genomic information generated by these international consortia will enhance the capacity for identification, characterization, and cloning of agronomically important genes of tropical crop plants. This book covers the recent progress ongenome research in tropical crop plants, including the development of molecular markers, genomic and cDNA libraries, expressed sequence tags (ESTs), genetic and physical maps, gene expression profiles, and whole genome sequences. The first section of this book provides background information for tropical agriculture of its crops. The second section consists of concise summaries of genomic research for the economically most important tropical crop plant species. As a comprehensive genomic resource, it is of considerable interest to practicing plant biologists, graduate and undergraduate students, and research professionals such plant breeders and germplasm curators who work on or are interested in tropical plant species.

Integrative Bioinformatics for Biomedical Big Data - A No-Boundary Thinking Approach: Xiuzhen Huang, Jason H. Moore, Yu Zhang Integrative Bioinformatics for Biomedical Big Data - A No-Boundary Thinking Approach
Xiuzhen Huang, Jason H. Moore, Yu Zhang
R1,478 Discovery Miles 14 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The volume and complexity of biological and biomedical research continues to grow exponentially with cutting-edge technologies such as high-throughput sequencing. Unfortunately, bioinformatics analysis is often considered only after data have been generated, which significantly limits the ability to make sense of complex big data. This unique book introduces the idea of No-Boundary Thinking (NBT) in biological and biomedical research, which aims to access, integrate, and synthesize data, information, and knowledge from bioinformatics to define important problems and articulate impactful research questions. This interdisciplinary volume brings together a team of bioinformatics specialists who draw on their own experiences with NBT to illustrate the importance of collaborative science. It will help stimulate discussion and application of NBT, and will appeal to all biomedical researchers looking to maximize their use of bioinformatics for making scientific discoveries.

Teachers know that connections with families will reap benefits, but they struggle with the "how." Research shows that there is a link between family involvement and their children's academic success. Other research shows that children learn best when instruction is meaningful and connects to the knowledge they and their families hold. Family nights are after-school, evening, or weekend events which involve families (adults and children) in enjoyable and academically grounded activities and experiences. Family nights provide a way for schools to learn about and from families and for families to learn about and from schools. The ultimate beneficiaries are the students who benefit from such increased involvement and from improved communication and understanding. Reproducibles and other materials include: " Invitations " Agendas " Sign-in sheets " Evaluation forms " Activity worksheets " Handouts " Overheads " Additional resources " Connections with national standards " Tips and suggestions for an outstanding event Includes information on adaptions for special populations, issues around providing food and incentives, and cost-saving ideas. Each chapter is a self-contained unit, containing all information, suggestions, and materials for planning and running a successful event. All family night designs have an academic focus and are aligned with standards. This book is appropriate for primary teachers and headteachers or anyone in the school or district responsible for family involvement.
