This timely Handbook synthesizes and analyzes key issues and
concerns relating to the impact of agriculture on both farmers and
non-farmers. With a unique focus on humans rather than animals or
the environment, the book is interdisciplinary and international in
scope, with contributions from sociologists, economists,
anthropologists and geographers providing case studies and examples
from all six populated continents. Looking at the pervasive impact
of agriculture, the Handbook explores all aspects of the production
of food and fiber within the agrifood value chain, including:
farmers and laborers growing crops and raising livestock,
businesses supplying inputs for these operations, and processors
transforming plants and animals into intermediate and finished
food, beverage and clothing products. Separated into four parts, it
analyzes how the agrifood industry affects farmer well-being; the
application of science and technology within an agricultural
context; the ways in which agriculture affects the well-being of
smallholder farmers, especially in developing countries; and
agriculture's impact more broadly on society. This will be a
beneficial read for economics and sociology students, particularly
those looking at the impacts of agriculture. Accessible and clear,
the Handbook will also be helpful for policymakers and agricultural
NGOs wanting a more in-depth understanding of the impact of
agriculture on human life.
A special harback editon limited to one hundred copies,
Interviews-Artists brings together artists active in the fields of
painting, drawing, photography, print and sculpture. Recorded
conversations explore work in progress and the development of their
practice. Patterns of personal experience link with a broader
continuum of progressive ideas and show how their imaginative
interventions bear on the world. The collection of interviews with
artists developed in three phases; first researched from 1988-92
and published in the quarterly review, Cv Journal of Art &
Crafts. Then gathered in an anthology, Interviews with the Artists:
Elements of Discourse, (editions in 1993/1996/2001/2007). The
second phase was researched from January to July 2010; the third
from October 2010 to July 2011. Sixty eight interviews from the
collection are published this volume.

Business firms are currently being forced to make a variety of
changes to respond to both threats and opportunities in the
international economy. This volume examines in detail the many ways
successful companies establish a presence in overseas markets. The
authors classify operations in the international environment into
four categories. First, companies that do not want to actually
establish local production facilities can export directly to
targeted markets or engage in turnkey operations. Historically,
this has been one of the most important means of acquiring
international markets and continues to be a viable strategy today.
Second, establishing contractual relationships with foreign
companies is effective when a firm does not want to operate a
wholly earned subsidy. Third, operating wholly owned facilities in
other nations is one of the most preferred methods of gaining and
maintaining a presence overseas. Firms typically employ this
strategy either by building new facilities or by merging with or
acquiring existing companies. The authors demonstrate how the
approach used by business depends on the nature of the obstacles a
host government places before foreign commerce.
This edited volume presents ethical and economic analyses of
agrifood competition. By systematically examining fairness and
openness in agricultural markets, it seeks to answer the question
of whether there is adequate competition in the agrifood industry
and whether the system is fair to all participants. It outlines
ethical and economic principles important for understanding
agrifood competition, presents arguments for and against
consolidation, globalization and the integration of agrifood
industries, and looks at the implications of globalization on the
nature of competition in specific agricultural contexts.
Not another textbook, but a valuable tool for doctors and
microbiologists wanting to know how to set up a PCR diagnostic
microbiology laboratory according to current regulatory standards
and perform assays supplied with patient clinical diagnostic
criteria and easy to follow protocols. Whether laboratories are
using commercial kits or in-house methods developed in their own
laboratories or adopted from published methods, all clinical
microbiology laboratories need to be able to understand, critically
evaluate, perform and interpret these tests according to rigorous
and clinically appropriate standards and international guidelines.
The cost and effort of development and evaluation of in-house tests
is considerable and many laboratories do not have the resources to
do so. This compendium is a vehicle to improve and maintain the
clinical relevance and high quality of diagnostic PCR. It is a
unique collection of; guidelines for PCR laboratory set up and
quality control, test selection criteria, methods and detailed step
by step protocols for a diagnostic assays in the field of molecular
microbiology. The structure of the book provides the PCR
fundamentals and describes the clinical aspects and diagnosis of
infectious disease. This is followed by protocols divided into;
bacteria, virus, fungi and parasites, and susceptibility screens.
The inclusion of medical criteria and interpretation adds value to
the compendium and benefits clinicians, scientists, researchers and
students of clinical diagnostic microbiology
Are any nonhuman animals conscious? Why, if at all, should we
strive to conserve natural environments? In what sense are we parts
of nature? In this book, Simon James draws on a range of
philosophical and literary sources to develop original answers to
these and other questions, setting out a refreshingly new approach
to environmental philosophy.
