Pentecostalism is the fastest growing religious movement of our
time. The unexpected birth of the modern-day Pentecostal movement
at the doorsteps of the twentieth century is as perplexing as its
continuing existence and unprecedented expansion worldwide. Once
marginalized from public discourse, Pentecostals have entered into
mainstream culture, religion, politics, academia, and social
action. However, the unprecedented growth of Pentecostalism in all
its diversity has led to characterizations ripe with platitudes,
stereotypes, and misrepresentations. This Guide for the Perplexed
sheds light on the most persistent contrasts characterizing the
Pentecostal movement: the tension between local manifestations and
global Pentecostalism, the inconsistency between spiritual
discernment and charismatic excess, the gap between rampant
denominationalism and the pursuit of Christian unity, the disparity
between poverty among many Pentecostals and the popularity of the
prosperity gospel, the division between Oneness Pentecostals and
their trinitarian counterparts, and the worldview of Pentecostals
beyond the confines of a religious movement. Those tensions form
the essence of global Pentecostalism and represent the emergence of
a global Christian world.
Through a systematic analysis of the conflicts emerging when the
public church encounters the public world, The Scandal of Pentecost
argues that the public advent of the church stands in continuity
with the public scandal of the incarnate and crucified Christ. The
book traces the contours of this scandal in the confrontation of
the dominant ruling hermeneutic of authority with a Christian
hermeneutic of resistance. This highlights the brokenness of the
human condition manifested by the church in the drunkenness of the
disciples, the speaking in other tongues, the baptism with the
Spirit, the empowerment of the flesh, and its public witness to a
scandalized world. The effects of the scandal transform both the
disciples’ individual and communal witness and their public
recognition as the church. Through the lens of a symbolic
hermeneutic, the public witness of the church at Pentecost reveals
a Christian scandal of anthropological proportions: with the
outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh the church emerges as the
symbol of humanity.
Research on Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity has increased
dramatically in recent decades, and a diverse array of disciplines
have begun to address a range of elements of these movements. Yet,
there exists very little understanding of Pentecostal theology, and
it is not uncommon to encounter stereotypes and misperceptions.
Addressing this gap in current research, The Routledge Handbook of
Pentecostal Theology is an exceptional reference source to the key
topics, challenges, and debates in this growing field of study and
is the first collection of its kind to offer a comprehensive
presentation and critical discussion of this subject. Comprising
over forty chapters written by a team of international
contributors, the Handbook is divided into five parts:
Contextualizing Pentecostal Theology Sources Theological Method
Doctrines and Practices Conversations and Challenges. These
sections take the reader through a comprehensive introduction to
what Pentecostals believe and how they practice their faith.
Looking at issues such as the core teachings of Pentecostalism
concerning Spirit baptism, divine healing, or eschatology; unique
practices, such as spiritual warfare and worship; and less
discussed issues, such as social justice and gender, each chapter
builds towards a nuanced and global picture of the theology of the
Pentecostal movement. The Routledge Handbook of Pentecostal
Theology is essential reading for students and researchers in
Pentecostal Studies, World Christianity, and Theology as well as
scholars working in contemporary Religious Studies.
Paul Tillich (1886-1965) is widely regarded as one of the most
influential theologians of the 20th century. By bringing his
thought together with the theology and practices of an important
contemporary Christian movement, Pentecostalism, this volume
provokes active, productive, critical, and creative dialogue with a
broad range of theological topics. These essays stimulate robust
conversation, engage on common ground regarding the work of the
Holy Spirit, and offer significant insights into the universal
concerns of Christian theology and Paul Tillich and his legacy.

Winner of the Pneuma Book Award 2018, from The Society for
Pentecostal Studies. Pentecostalism is the most rapidly growing
branch of Christianity since the 20th century, yet it does not lend
itself well to a singular doctrine and there is, therefore, no
single comprehensive account of Pentecostal theology worldwide. In
this volume, Wolfgang Vondey suggests an account of Pentecostal
theology that is genuine to Pentecostals worldwide while allowing
for different adaptation and explication among the various
Pentecostal groups. He argues that Pentecostal theology is
fundamentally concerned with the renewal of the Christian life
identified by the transforming work of the Holy Spirit and directed
toward the kingdom of God. The book unfolds in two main parts
illustrating the full gospel story and theology. Eleven chapters
identify the spiritual underpinnings and motivations for
Pentecostal theology, formulate a Pentecostal theology of action,
translate, apply, and exemplify Pentecostal practices and
experiences, and integrate Pentecostal theology in the wider
Christian tradition.
This insightful study offers the first comprehensive overview of
the theology and praxis of Roman Catholic theologian Heribert
Muhlen. This theologically accurate and historically sensitive book
shows that Muhlen has gone beyond his popular early academic
exercise by documenting and proposing a liturgical praxis that aims
at providing a concrete framework for the acceptance and renewal of
the human covenantal relationship with God. In every respect,
Muhlen's theology and praxis marks the beginning of a new profile
of the Church. A letter and epilogue by Heribert Muhlen are
included.

Description: This book is the follow-up volume to Pentecostalism
and Christian Unity: Ecumenical Documents and Critical Assessments.
The first volume documented the history and ecumenical engagement
of Pentecostals during the twentieth century. This new collection
traces the ecumenical developments, narratives, and conversations
during the first decade of the twenty-first century. The ecumenical
community and Pentecostals have consistently lamented the absence
of a comprehensive gathering of resources for both groups. This
particular volume provides two significant assets in this regard:
(1) documentation of new and emerging conversations that have not
yet produced official reports, and (2) official reports from
continuing conversations. The book begins with an overview of a
century of Pentecostal participation in Christian unity. Part One
contains ecumenical narratives on the Joint Consultative Group of
Pentecostals and the World Council of Churches, Lutherans and
Pentecostals, the Global Christian Forum, and Christian Churches
Together in the USA. Part Two contains the extensive reports from
the official dialogue of Pentecostals with the Roman Catholic
Church, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, and the
Oneness-Trinitarian Pentecostal dialogue. This collection presents
an invaluable resource for teachers, scholars, and pastors
interested in engaging the global Christian arena from the
worldwide and ecumenical perspectives of Pentecostalism.
Endorsements: "Wolfgang Vondey's latest collection of
twenty-first-century reports, the fruit of a variety of ecumenical
dialogues with pentecostal participation, should go far toward
informing Pentecostals of the facts. They should also alleviate
pentecostal fears concerning the theological agenda of the
ecumenical movement and those Pentecostals who have been called to
work in it." --Cecil M. Robeck, Jr., Professor of Church History
and Ecumenics, Fuller Theological Seminary "The second volume of
Pentecostalism and Christian Unity, like the first, is a gift to
the whole church. Here again Wolfgang Vondey gathers documents from
ecumenical dialogues involving Pentecostals. . . . These two
volumes are a vital resource for understanding not only
Pentecostalism, but also the church itself. These volumes document
and herald the much-sought entry of Pentecostalism into the
ecumenical movement. May they have the impact--within
Pentecostalism and beyond it--they so richly deserve." --Barry
Ensign-George, Associate for Theology, Presbyterian Church (USA)
