R4,565 R3,562 Discovery Miles 35 620 Save R1,003 (22%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Climate change is an inevitable and urgent global challenge with long-term implications for the sustainable development of all countries. To overcome this human crisis, the scientific consensus is driving global action towards low carbon economics. Though this action has to involve all sectors (industries, governments, and citizens) and at all levels (global, national and regional levels), the implementation of climate strategies will predominantly be at the regional level. By establishing an innovative range of model technologies, this book aims to develop systematic quantificational methods, such as uncertain multi-objective programming models and system dynamics models, to provide a new approach to low carbon economics that can serve as a paradigm for general regions. At the same time, it offers decision makers a number of effective strategies for some key issues in regional low carbon development, such as greenhouse gas control, ecological capacity evaluation, regional economic prediction, energy structure optimization, land resource utilization, industrial structure adjustment, low carbon industrial chains, low carbon transportation systems and low carbon tourism. It also provides researchers with a new perspective on how to address social problems using quantitative techniques.

This book provides a timely and comprehensive overview of recent advances in the field, from leading experts in biology, chemistry, and engineering. A variety of topics are covered, from fundamentals of functional nucleic acids, to their applications as sensors, to nanotechnologies; as well as integration of functional nucleic acids into practical analytical systems.

Surviving Democracy - Mitigating Climate Change in A Neoliberalized World (Paperback): Chien-Yi Lu Surviving Democracy - Mitigating Climate Change in A Neoliberalized World (Paperback)
Chien-Yi Lu
R1,209 Discovery Miles 12 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is democracy, in its neoliberalized form, responsible in part for bringing us to the brink of self-destruction and the policy inertia that is doing away with our chances of survival? Surviving Democracy probes the way democracy became neoliberalized and the role neoliberalized democracy plays in our dealings with-causing, understanding, denying, and mitigating-climate change. Defining neoliberalism as the art of exclusion through inclusion, Chien-Yi Lu treats climate change as collateral damage of the neoliberal order established to ensure upward power and wealth redistribution. Highlighting the role money played in the "free" competition of ideas between Keynes and Hayek, she investigates the resulting global structure, wherein the wealthy and powerful sit above the market and democracy, and the way this structure fundamentally contradicts with honest climate mitigation. Central to the structure is neoliberal elites' leveraging of the fluid relationship between the market and the state. Merging citizen power with consumer and investor powers is therefore imperative to the success of climate action. While expediting the bursting of the carbon bubble is an obvious answer, it is the discussion of the meat bubble that brings the book full circle, linking our survival to neoliberalism, inclusion, and democracy. Surviving Democracy probes the role democracy plays in our dealings with-causing, understanding, denying, and hopefully, mitigating-climate change.

Postmonolingual Critical Thinking - Internationalising Higher Education Through Students' Languages and Knowledge... Postmonolingual Critical Thinking - Internationalising Higher Education Through Students' Languages and Knowledge (Paperback)
Michael Singh, Si Yi Lu
R1,186 Discovery Miles 11 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Maintaining English as the sole language of knowledge production and dissemination in universities that enrol students who speak multiple languages, and those students learning other languages, is questionable. This groundbreaking work calls into question the exclusive use of academic English in internationalising higher education teaching and research. By interrogating the dominant assumptions informing the monolingual mindset, Postmonolingual Critical Thinking indicates that academically literate students can capably use their repertoires of languages and knowledge for educational purposes. The case for students' languages and knowledge having a place in English-medium universities is made through evidence of the uses of Zhongwen, academic Chinese. Proposing to broaden the scope of languages used for knowledge production and dissemination, this book highlights the educational potential of multilingualism. Postmonolingual Critical Thinking makes a unique proposal: that universities which recruit doctoral students from Asia create education policy practices that enable them to extend their multilingual capabilities. Arguing that by drawing on intellectual resources from their various languages, students construct knowledge of critical thinking in complex, interesting and potentially innovative ways, this book guides higher education institutions in putting this into practice. It outlines a pragmatic approach for universities to explore the potential of multipolar, multilingual education, while being attentive to the tensions posed by assertions of a monolingual mindset. Postmonolingual Critical Thinking has the potential to create great change in a higher education sector which is mired by a monolingual approach to graduate training. This unique and thought-provoking book is essential reading for those in the fields of applied linguistics, comparative education, higher education, international studies, teacher education and translation studies.

Earthquake Disasters - Prevention and Reconstruction (Hardcover): Jiuping Xu, Yi Lu, Edmund C.Penning- Rowsell Earthquake Disasters - Prevention and Reconstruction (Hardcover)
Jiuping Xu, Yi Lu, Edmund C.Penning- Rowsell
R3,883 Discovery Miles 38 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores practices and approaches on pre-disaster prevention and post-disaster reconstruction for vulnerable countries and areas enhancing earthquake disaster resilience. Destructive earthquakes have frequently occurred in urban or rural areas around the world, causing severe damage on human societies. Pre-earthquake prevention and post-earthquake reconstruction effect the disaster resilience building and long-term development of the affected communities and areas. In recent years, researchers from around the world have made a lot of efforts to study on the theme 'earthquake disaster prevention and reconstruction'. The chapters in this edited volume contribute to the literature of earthquake disaster research from scientific, social and institutional aspects. These interdisciplinary studies mainly focus on human and policy dimensions of earthquake disaster, such as earthquake risk mitigation, social-physical resilience building, resilience capability assessment, healthcare surge capacity, house reconstruction, the roles of schools, households, civil societies and public participation in earthquake disaster prevention and reconstruction. The authors come from several counties, including China, Bangladesh, Iran, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Indonesia, covering the cases from those countries prone to earthquakes. These nine distinctive chapters have been elaborately selected and integrated from the international, ranked, peer-reviewed journal, Environmental Hazards.

The Politics of Locality - Making a Nation of Communities in Taiwan (Hardcover): Hsin-Yi Lu The Politics of Locality - Making a Nation of Communities in Taiwan (Hardcover)
Hsin-Yi Lu
R4,164 Discovery Miles 41 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

During the mid-1990s, Taiwan witnessed a remarkable proliferation of historical writings and cultural movements pertaining to 'the local'. 'Place (difang)' and 'community (shequ)' became two ubiquitous terms in the lexicon of being Taiwanese.
This book is a critical examination of the socio-historical condition in which the discourse of local diversity emerged and gradually permeated Taiwan's public culture. Interweaving ethnographic sensibility and theoretical insights across disciplines, including anthropology, cultural studies and cultural geography the study elucidates the complex relationships between localism, nationalism and globalism. Not only is it a rare type of ethnography in Taiwan studies, this book also enriches our understanding of the increasingly significant field of East Asia (post)modernity.

Michael Y. Wang, Yi Lu, D. Greg Anderson, Praveen V Mummaneni
R4,931 Discovery Miles 49 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Contemporary spinal surgeons, whether orthopedic or neurosurgeons, are increasingly recognizing minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) as a valuable option for managing advanced degenerative diseases. MISS techniques minimize blood loss and surgical site pain, while speeding recovery. Thus, the combination of MISS with adult spinal deformity was a natural choice. Currently, the techniques, technologies, and education of surgeons have finally reached a point where MISS deformity surgeries are becoming commonplace. Nevertheless, the field is young enough (and still evolving) that no comprehensive texts have addressed the unique challenges it poses for surgeons. This book fills that gap.

Off-Site Art Curating (Paperback): Pei-Yi Lu Off-Site Art Curating (Paperback)
Pei-Yi Lu
R1,977 Discovery Miles 19 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book argues that the value of Off-Site Art lies in the fact that art should not be confined to a gallery; instead, art manifests its power in everyday life. Further argues that a specific approach to curating, Off-Site Art Curating, is required. The task of Off-Site Art Curating is to create a support system that mediates between the diverse forces in operation in order to ensure that art is valued as art itself rather than merely playing a subsidiary role serving political, economic or another purposes. As a distinct mode of art production, Off-Site Art refers to works in temporary exhibitions which are held away from traditional gallery spaces and create their own time-space on site, usually being 'site-specific', 'context-sensitive' and 'audience participation'. Several cases in Taiwan (1987-2007) are taken to examine four primary aspects: Off-Site Art Curating and Politics; Off-Site Art Curating and Business; Off-Site Art Curating and Urban Regeneration; Off-Site Art Curating and the Community.

Mehmet S. Ozsos, A. Erdem, Giovanna Marrazza, Ashok Mulchandani, Yi Lu, …
R3,999 Discovery Miles 39 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Nucleic acids are the fundamental building blocks of life and are found in all living things. In recent years, their functions have been shown to extend beyond the Watson-Crick base pair recognition of complementary strands. Molecules (known as aptamers) consisting of 40-50 nucleotides have been isolated that are able to bind a broad range of molecules with high affinity and specificity. The molecules recognized by aptamers range from small organic molecules to proteins, cells and even intact viral particles. Catalytic DNA molecules called NAzymes (RNAzyme or DNAzyme) have also been shown to exist and, when combined with aptamers, are known as aptazymes. These biomolecules can be used to develop smart and innovative biosensors for environmental analysis. Monitoring of contaminants in the air, water and soil is a key component in understanding and managing risks to human health and ecosystems. This, in conjunction with the time and cost involved in traditional chemical analysis, means there is a growing need for simple, rapid, cost-effective and portable screening methods. Biosensors are compact devices which complement current field screening and monitoring methods. This book demonstrates the incredible opportunities that nucleic acids can offer to environmental analytical chemistry. The chapters: show how nucleic acids have a pivotal role in the development of smart biosensors for environmental monitoring; describe the development of biosensors based on aptamers and NAzymes for the detection of organic and inorganic pollutants; deal with the use of nucleic acid based biosensors for environmental toxicity screening, and detail the use of nanomaterials, as well as miniaturization and lab-on-a-chip technologies, for nucleic acid based biosensing systems.
