This book addresses development laws for axial strain and excess
pore water pressure in silty clay around subway shield tunnels
before and after freezing-thawing when subjected to subway loading,
as well as the effect of freezing-thawing on the dynamic parameters
of silty clay, including the dynamic modulus and damping ratio,
introducing readers to the design and construction of bypasses in
subway tunnels with the artificial freezing method. On this basis,
it then studies the microstructures of silty clay before and after
freezing-thawing cyclic loading by means of scanning electron
microscope tests and mercury intrusion porosimetry tests. Lastly,
the book presents a numerical simulation of the dynamics of silty
clay around subway tunnels before and after thawing. Given its
scope, it offers a valuable reference guide for construction
researchers and designers alike, as well as senior undergraduate
and graduate students at colleges and universities.

This bookintroduces a key issue in research on the climatic
impact of land cover and land use changes via terrestrial
biogeophysical processes. The parameterization of surface processes
and a systematic approach to modeling the climatic impacts of land
use change are discussed respectively, and can be used to improve
parameterization schemes for climate numerical models and to
provide a systematic method, thus offering more scientific and
enhanced support for research on the climatic effects of land
use/cover change. Further, based on predictions and scenario
analyses of land use changes in typical zones, the climatic impact
of various types of changes in different areas can be simulated
through climatic numerical modeling, the simulation results are
suitable for use in climate mitigation, land use planning, urban
development planning, etc. Thus, the book is intended for
researchers and professionals working in the area of meteorology
systems, climatic numerical modeling, climate change, and land
use/cover change, as well as decision makers in meteorology and
land use planning.

Analysis and Control of Boolean Networks presents a systematic new
approach to the investigation of Boolean control networks. The
fundamental tool in this approach is a novel matrix product called
the semi-tensor product (STP). Using the STP, a logical function
can be expressed as a conventional discrete-time linear system. In
the light of this linear expression, certain major issues
concerning Boolean network topology - fixed points, cycles,
transient times and basins of attractors - can be easily revealed
by a set of formulae. This framework renders the state-space
approach to dynamic control systems applicable to Boolean control
networks. The bilinear-systemic representation of a Boolean control
network makes it possible to investigate basic control problems
including controllability, observability, stabilization,
disturbance decoupling etc.

This book examines a ubiquitous, yet under-researched, area of
language education, i.e., language teachers' use of curriculum
materials. It particularly focuses on EFL teachers' use of
prescribed curriculum materials in higher education in Mainland
China and presents a qualitative, multi-case study involving four
Chinese EFL teachersand eight students (two students from each
teacher's class) at one university in Mainland China. Drawing on
data from pre-lesson and post-lesson interviews with the teachers,
lesson observations, and documents in three consecutive semesters
at the target university, the book delineates the processes of
materials useinclassroom settings. It also identifies four domains
of factors that influenced the enactment of curriculum materials.
Most importantly, by adopting Vygotsky's (1978) mediation theory
and Remillard's (2005) participatory perspective, the book
constructs a "curriculum enactment mediation model" to reveal the
complex and mediated relations among teachers, learners, curriculum
materials, and context. It also recommends practical implications
for materials developers, teacher educators, administrators, and
policymakers.
This book was written as a graduate student course--Shock Dynamics.
Up to now, the first author has taught this course to the graduate
students in the field of Fluid Mechanics, Department of Modern
Mechanics, University of Science and Technology of China for seven
times. In the spring semester 1989, during his visit to the United
States, the first author taught this course to the graduate
students of Department of Mathemat ics, University of Colorado at
Denver. At the same time, he gave a series of four lectures on
Shock Dynamics to the graduate students of Department of Aerospace
Engineering Sciences, University of Colorado at Boulder. In 1991,
during the first author's visit to Japan, he gave some lectures on
Shock Dynamics in Tohoku University, University of Tokyo and Kyushu
Uni versity. The dynamic phenomena of shock waves such as
propagation, diffraction, reflection, refraction and interaction of
shock waves may be studied by using experimental methods, numerical
calculations and theoretical analyses. Although the detailed flow
patterns of phenomena of shock motion can be obtained by using
experimental methods and numerical calculations of solving Euler
Equation or Navier-Stokes Equation, for example, the diffractions
of shock waves by wedges form various phenomena of reflection--RR,
SMR, CMR and DMR, we also need to analyse the process of the
formation of shock waves in various phenomena of diffraction,
reflection and interaction by using theoretical methods."
This book presents a state-of-the-art technique for formal
verification of continuous-time Simulink/Stateflow diagrams,
featuring an expressive hybrid system modelling language, a
powerful specification logic and deduction-based verification
approach, and some impressive, realistic case studies. Readers will
learn the HCSP/HHL-based deductive method and the use of
corresponding tools for formal verification of Simulink/Stateflow
diagrams. They will also gain some basic ideas about fundamental
elements of formal methods such as formal syntax and semantics, and
especially the common techniques applied in formal modelling and
verification of hybrid systems. By investigating the successful
case studies, readers will realize how to apply the pure theory and
techniques to real applications, and hopefully will be inspired to
start to use the proposed approach, or even develop their own
formal methods in their future work.
This book discusses recent advances in the estimation and control
of networked systems with unacknowledged packet losses: systems
usually known as user-datagram-protocol-like. It presents both the
optimal and sub-optimal solutions in the form of algorithms, which
are designed to be implemented easily by computer routines. It also
provides MATLAB (R) routines for the key algorithms. It shows how
these methods and algorithms can solve estimation and control
problems effectively, and identifies potential research directions
and ideas to help readers grasp the field more easily. The novel
auxiliary estimator method, which is able to deal with estimators
that consist of exponentially increasing terms, is developed to
analyze the stability and convergence of the optimal estimator. The
book also explores the structure and solvability of the optimal
control, i.e. linear quadratic Gaussian control. It develops
various sub-optimal but efficient solutions for estimation and
control for industrial and practical applications, and analyzes
their stability and performance. This is a valuable resource for
researchers studying networked control systems, especially those
related to non-TCP-like networks. The practicality of the ideas
included makes it useful for engineers working with networked
control.
This book investigates how schools, enterprises and families in
China have coped with the formal online education in the light of
government policy throughout the COVID-19 epidemic outbreak, with
special focus on the problems they have encountered and possible
solutions. Using grounded theory, over 1000 posts retrieved from
public online forums were analyzed under a 4*4 framework, referring
to four special time nodes (proposal period, exploratory period,
full deployed period, exiting period) and four major subjects
(government, schools, enterprises, families). The book identifies
four main issues faced by massive online education during the
epidemic: platform selection in proposal period, teacher training
in exploratory period, resource integration in full deployed
period, and flexibility of returning to schools in exiting period.
These findings enlighten us with a deeper understanding of the
process of online learning in an educational emergency, helping to
develop best countermeasures in similar situations, as well as to
provide paths to follow for other countries. The book will appeal
to teachers, researchers and school administrators of the online
education and education emergency management, as well as those who
are interested in Chinese education during the COVID-19 outbreak in
general.
This book describes the mineralization process of barite-fluorite
deposits in southeastern Sichuan, Yangtze Block, China. Mainly
through systematic field geological surveys and detailed indoor
research work, the typical barite-fluorite deposits in this area
were analyzed using a variety of analysis methods such as single
fluid inclusion LA-ICP-MS composition analysis, trace rare earth
element analysis, H-O-S-Sr isotope analysis, F element content
analysis, and Sm-Nd geochronological analysis. By in-depth analysis
of the ore-forming environment, mineralization process and
geological characteristics of barite-fluorite deposits, the
following were determined: (1) the source of ore-forming fluids of
barite-fluorite deposits and (2) the migration, concentration,
enrichment, and evolution of ore-forming sources, exploring the
formation mechanism of barite-fluorite deposits. Summarizing the
mineralization regularity of the deposit in this area of China
provides a new insight and basis for the study of similar types of
deposits in the world.

China's reform and opening-up have contributed to its long-term and
rapid economic development, resulting in a much stronger economic
strength and much better life for its people. Meanwhile, the
deepening economic integration between China and the world has
resulted in an increasingly complex environment, growing
influencing factors and severe challenges to China's economic
development. Under the "new normal" of the Chinese economy,
accurate analysis of the economic situation is essential to
scientific decision-making, sustainable and healthy economic
development and to build a moderately prosperous society in all
respects. By applying statistical and national economic accounting
methods, and based on detailed statistics and national economic
accounting data, this book presents an in-depth analysis of the key
economic fields, such as real estate economy, automotive industry,
high-tech industry, investment, opening-up, income distribution of
residents, economic structure, balance of payments structure and
financial operation, since the reform and opening-up, especially in
recent years. It aims to depict the performance and characteristics
of these key economic fields and their roles in the development of
national economy, thus providing useful suggestions for economic
decision-making, and facilitating the sustainable and healthy
development of the economy and the realization of the goal of
building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
This book interrogates the inevitability and practicability of
full-scale, land-intensive capitalist agriculture in China, whilst
analyzing the labor-intensive industrious revolution as an
alternative rural development path. It presents a critical account
of the recent rise of agrarian capitalism as a force that would
undermine hundreds of millions of people's livelihoods in the
populous country. The Land Question in China traces the roots of
the industrious revolution in China back to the eighteenth century,
drawing comparisons between contemporary rural development and
economic prosperity in the mid-Qing dynasty. In the context of
neoliberal restructuring, it argues that vigorous rural development
with broad access to land offers a solution to mitigate precarious
urban employment and population pressure, while the transfer of
land from villagers to large producers and urban investors will
exacerbate these problems. Comparisons with South Africa and the
East Asian economies of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan further
illustrate this and help to develop a new interpretation of the
industrious revolution and its contemporary relevance. Providing a
critical examination of the "new land reform" in China from a world
historical perspective, this book will be useful to students and
scholars of sociology, economics, and development, as well as
Chinese Studies.
This book covers the advances in the studies of
hydrogen-bonding-driven supramolecular systems made over the past
decade. It is divided into four parts, with the first introducing
the basics of hydrogen bonding and important hydrogen bonding
patterns in solution as well as in the solid state. The second part
covers molecular recognition and supramolecular structures driven
by hydrogen bonding. The third part introduces the formation of
hollow and giant macrocycles directed by hydrogen bonding, while
the last part summarizes hydrogen bonded supramolecular polymers.
This book is designed to bring together in a single volume the many
important aspects of hydrogen bonding supramolecular chemistry and
will be a valuable resource for graduates and researchers working
in supramolecular and related sciences. Zhan-Ting Li, PhD, is a
