This manga recreation of Shakespeare's text transfers the action
from Ancient Rome to a future Iraq, once again facing dictatorship
after its prolonged struggles to establish a democracy. Part of the
successful Manga Shakespeare series, a fusion of classic
Shakespeare with manga visuals.
Is loyalty to the state worth everything? Titus Andronicus, Rome's
most honored general, has led twenty-one of his sons to their death
on battlefields, fighting for Rome, even killing one for, in his
judgment, behaving disloyalty to the emperor. With the Roman
emperorship uncertain, he returns triumphant from wars against the
Goths, bringing with him the captives Queen Tamora, her sons, and
her lover Aaron. From the beginning the violent and tragic
consequences of this action decide the course of the play.
Undoubtedly Shakespeare at his most violent, Titus Andronicus is
not for the faint-hearted. Beyond the bloodshed it is an
examination of the state: Rome in which law, custom, and tradition
have come to be so powerful as to obscure reality, and so make
possible a barbarity that understands itself as the peak of
civilization; and the individual: driven by loyalty, revenge, and
the desire for power, and yet endowed with the capacity to change.
Has any other love story become so enmeshed in our culture as the
tragic story of Romeo and Juliet? In fair Verona the families of
Montague and Capulet are locked in a long-standing, bitter blood
feud when young Romeo Montague slips into a masquerade party at the
Capulet's. During the dance he glimpses Juliet, the daughter of the
house, and is struck by love at first sight. She returns his
passion and they promise each other everlasting love
notwithstanding the rift between their families. Despite their
extraordinary circumstances, the story of Romeo and Juliet has
become the archetypal tale of young love. Reflecting the seemingly
insurmountable hurdles young lovers perceive and the conviction
that even death is preferable to separation. Perhaps the
fascination also lies in Shakespeare's exquisite language that so
perfectly expresses the depths of feeling that manifests what all
lovers would say if they found the words.
One of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies, Othello sets itself apart
with its personal scale, fascinating plot and compelling, exotic
characters. It shows the two sides of passion with shocking
clarity. At first great love overcomes the great differences in
social status, age, and race between Othello and Desdemona and
their mutual devotion seems invulnerable. But the waves of passion
are turned to obsessive jealousy at the hand of Iago, the perfect
villain, who has set out to destroy Othello on a personal mission
of revenge. With a faultlessly executed plan, Iago sews the seeds
of doubt and mistrust that pervert Othello's once noble mind and
ensnares those closest to him into a miserable web of deceit and
doom. This powerful drama, with its gripping dialogue and
unequalled poetry, is not to be missed.
Hamlet is considered the greatest of Shakespeare's works,
unsurpassed in richness and levels of meaning; it probes into the
deepest human emotions. Haunted by his father's ghost, Hamlet sets
out to avenge his death. But, has he heard his father or the voice
of madness welling up from his mourning heart? The father's ghost
accuses his brother Claudius, who has assumed the throne and
married his wife Queen Gertrude, of murder. Unable to trust anyone
anymore, Hamlet is consumed by his mission, shunning those who love
him, even killing the eavesdropping Polonius, thinking him to be
Claudius. This sets into motion events that threaten the stability
of the whole kingdom. A story of truth, betrayal, family, loyalty
and fate it has been unfailingly popular since it was first
performed. Hamlet speaks to each generation of its own yearnings
and problems.
The young King Richard has legitimately inherited the throne, yet
he rules with self-serving arrogance, neglects his subjects and
spends liberally. Tensions among the nobility mount as his
favoritism and miscalculations turn many against him. When he is
forced to cover his involvement in the murder of his uncle he
banishes two nobles, Henry Bolingbroke and Thomas Mowbray, Duke of
Norfolk. But Bolingbroke soon returns, enraged that Richard has
seized property and wealth that he had rightfully inherited.
Despite his tyrannical behavior, Richard is defended by many as
God's chosen ruler. But, having created a rift in the nobility that
will continue to fester for a hundred years, Richard has also set
in motion the events that may cost him the crown. Written entirely
in verse, Richard II is one of Shakespeare's finest history plays.
In what is perhaps Shakespeare's earliest play, love goes astray,
deception and betrayal cause confusion, and a multilayered plot
keeps the pace energetic and joyful. Proteus and Valentine are each
sent from Verona to the court of the Duke of Milan. They are the
best of friends, until Proteus is enamored by Silvia, though she is
the new object of Valentine's affections. Despite having sworn
constancy to his own betrothed, Julia, Proteus sets out to betray
his unsuspecting friend, only to find that both Silvia and Julia
have a thing or two to teach him about loyalty and love. The play
reveals how the ideal of male friendship can crumble under the
strain of conflicting love interests. A wonderful comedy filled
with passionate lovers, women disguised, outlaws, fights, sudden
revelations, and a happy denouement, all highlighted by a farcical
subplot featuring the character Launce and his dog Crab.
When identical twins wash upon the shore of Ilyria confusion,
mistaken identities and misplaced infatuations are sure to follow
in this delightful comedy. The shipwrecked twins Viola and
Sebastian, each believing the other dead, make their separate ways
to the court of Duke Orsinio. Viola protects herself by disguising
herself as a boy, Cesario, and enters the Duke's services. He pines
for Lady Olivia, but she becomes smitten with the messenger, the
disguised Viola, who has herself developed stirrings for the Duke.
Add in another suitor, a scheming uncle and the arrival of
Sebastian and the hilarious confusion reaches its climax. A
wonderful play that is one of Shakespeare's most popular and
performed comedies.
No one does romantic comedy like William Shakespeare, and Much Ado
About Nothing is the Bard at the top of his game. The Italian
countryside is the perfect setting for love, which soon appears in
abundance. We have Hero and Claudio, star-struck sweethearts who
are kept apart by wicked machinations. Beatrice and Benedick are
the original couple who can't stand each other yet are made for
each other. Add to that a bevy of villains, fools, and assorted
family members, and you have a recipe for fun of the highest order.
As You Like It is a light-hearted, gender-bending comedy by William
Shakespeare. Rosalind has fallen for Orlando, but wants to test his
feelings, so she disguises herself as a boy and befriends him. Will
Orlando convince Rosalind he is for real, or will the guy talk turn
her off? Shakespeare gleefully throws a number of courting couples
into the mix, adds a dose of political scheming, and turns up the
fun in what has become one of his most beloved and
frequently-performed plays.

Edited, introduced and annotated by Cedric Watts, M.A., Ph.D.,
Emeritus Professor of English, University of Sussex. The Wordsworth
Classics' Shakespeare Series presents a newly-edited sequence of
William Shakespeare's works. The textual editing takes account of
recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal.
Romeo and Juliet is the world's most famous drama of tragic young
love. Defying the feud which divides their families, Romeo and
Juliet enjoy the fleeting rapture of courtship, marriage and sexual
fulfilment; but a combination of old animosities and new
coincidences brings them to suicidal deaths. This play offers a
rich mixture of romantic lyricism, bawdy comedy, intimate harmony
and sudden violence. Long successful in the theatre, it has also
generated numerous operas, ballets and films; and these have helped
to make Romeo and Juliet perennially topical.
