Thermodynamics is used increasingly in ecology to understand the system properties of ecosystems because it is a basic science that describes energy transformation from a holistic view. In the last decade, many contributions to ecosystem theory based on thermodynamics have been published, therefore an important step toward integrating these theories and encouraging a more wide spread use of them is to present them in one volume.
The term "zooplankton" describes the community of floating, often
microscopic, animals that inhabit aquatic environments. Being near
the base of the food chain, they serve as food for larger animals,
such as fish.
Feeding Ecology in Apes and Other Primates focuses on evolutionary perspectives of the complex interactions between the environment, food sources, physiology and behaviour in primates. This highly interdisciplinary volume provides a benchmark to assess dietary alterations that affected human evolution by putting the focus on the diet of hominid primates. It also offers a new perspective on the behavioural ecology of the last common ancestor by integrating corresponding information from both human and non-human primates. The potential of innovations of applied biotechnology are also explored to set new standards for future research on feeding ecology, and new information on feeding ecology in humans, apes and other primates is synthesized to help refine or modify current models of socioecology. Sperm Competition and Sexual Selection presents the intricate ways
in which sperm compete to fertilize eggs and how this has prompted
reinterpretations of breeding behavior. This book provides a
theoretical framework for the study of sperm competition, which is

The relationship between systematics and ecology has recently been
invigorated, and developed a long way from the "old" field of
comparative biology. This change has been two-fold. Advances in
phylogenetic research have allowed explicit phylogenetic hypotheses
to be constructed for a range of different groups of organisms, and
ecologists are now more aware that organism traits are influenced
by the interaction of past and present. This volume discusses the
impact of these modern phylogenetic methods on ecology, especially
those using comparative methods.
Prepared as a tribute to Donald A. Riley, the essays that appear
here are representative of a research area that has loosely been
classified as animal cognition -- a categorization that reflects a
functionalist philosophy that was prevalent in Riley's laboratory
and that many of his students absorbed. According to this
philosophy, it is acceptable to hypothesize that an animal might
engage in complex processing of information, as long as one can
operationalize evidence for such a process and the hypothesis can
be presented in the context of testable predictions that can
differentiate it from other mechanisms. The contributions to this
volume represent the three most important areas of research in
animal cognition -- stimulus representation, memory processes, and
perceptual processes -- although current research has considerably
blurred these distinctions.
Freshwater ecosystems have the greatest species diversity per unit area and many endangered species. This book shows that, rather than being a marginal part of terrestrial protected area management, freshwater conservation is central to sustaining biodiversity. How can we engage communities? What is empowerment? To what extent should the project process be participatory? How is an outsider-insider relationship handled? How do researchers negotiate with the hegemony of western cultural interpretations? How are organizational and contextual influences handled in a project? What leadership demands do such projects place on researchers? What is capacity building? What are creative leaders and creative communities? How does the researcher journey from their studio to the situation? Fish - including cyclostomes, elasmobranchs, and teleosts - display a wide variety of ways of coping with the stringent conditions they encounter in the aquatic environment. This diversity is especially evident in the female genital systems where some fish spawn profligate numbers of small eggs while others develop a few yolky eggs that may receive parental care. This is the first ever monumental and scientific documentation of the faunal wealth of the Indian Desert state of Rajasthan. This volume, the first of two, provides background on Rajasthan and covers species diversity and distribution of fauna. A scholarly contribution to the field of knowledge, it provides novel and vital information on the vertebrate faunal heritage of India's largest state. Broadly falling under the Indo-Malaya Ecozone, the three major biomes of Rajasthan include deserts and xeric shrublands, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests. The corresponding ecoregions to the above biomes are, respectively, the Thar Desert and northwestern thorn scrub forests, the Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forests, and the Upper Gangtic Plains moist deciduous forests. Contrary to popular belief, the well-known Thar or Great Indian Desert occupies only a part of the state. Rajasthan is diagonally divided by the Aravalli mountain ranges into arid and semi-arid regions. Wolves are controversial figures worldwide and much effort has focused on how to conserve them while addressing public concerns. Many books have now been published in the broad field of environmental toxicology. However, to date, none of have presented the often fascinating stories of the wildlife science, and the steps along the way from discovery of problems caused by environmental pollutants to the regulatory and non-regulatory efforts to address the problems. This book provides case by case examinations of how toxic chemical effects on wildlife have brought about policy and regulatory decisions, and positive changes in environmental conditions. The population of the Persian leopard (Panthera pardus saxicolor) has drastically declined; this Asian leopard subspecies has disappeared from some parts of its former range. Containing large areas of potential habitats with leopard presence across almost all of its provinces, Iran is known to be the last stronghold for the Persian leopard in the region. Humans have moved organisms around the world for centuries but it is only relatively recently that invasion ecology has grown into a mainstream research field.
