Viktor Schreckengost (1906-2005) was a prolific industrial designer of diverse products, from ceramics to pedal cars, from 1930 until the end of the 20th century. He focused on dinnerware between 1930 and 1956, while he was employed by pottery manufacturers in Ohio. Some of his most successful dinnerware lines were Americana and Diana (1934), Manhattan (1935), Triumph and Jiffy Kitchenware (1937). This new book is a study of Schreckengost's designs for dinnerware shapes, produced primarily by the (American) Limoges China Company and by the Salem China Company. Many of his 24 major dinnerware shapes became standard icons of the age, decorated with over 180 different patterns, many among the most popular of the time and his famous Jazz Bowl, of 1931. Over 300 photographs, most in full color, demonstrate the bold contours and cheerful colors that made his dinnerware successful. Special commissions, commemorative plates, and even children's dishes are also discussed and shown. Today's dinnerware collectors, designers, and artists will find inspiration in this beautiful presentation of truly original and successful designs.

The M9 has been the United States Army's standard bayonet for over two decades - with no plans in sight to replace it. In fact, it is already the longest serving American bayonet, joining the M-16 as an enduring symbol of the American soldier. Without exaggeration, it has become an icon of the American Army in much the same way as the Gladius became symbolic of the Roman Legions. This book chiefly focuses on the M9, its manufacturers, evolution, variations, accessories, and collectability with the objective to spotlight only those M9s of military issue. Beyond that, the intention is to provide fellow collectors with a reference and a tool that will enhance their collecting experience through objective data as well as personal knowledge and experience. There is no other bayonet in all of American military history which possesses such a one of a kind individualism while at the same time displaying so obvious an American personality of design as the M9!
LONGLISTED FOR THE HISTORICAL WRITERS' ASSOCIATION NON-FICTION CROWN A SUNDAY TIMES NON-FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR 'Timely ... a long and engrossing survey of the library' FT 'A sweeping, absorbing history, deeply researched' Richard Ovenden, author of Burning the Books Famed across the known world, jealously guarded by private collectors, built up over centuries, destroyed in a single day, ornamented with gold leaf and frescoes or filled with bean bags and children's drawings - the history of the library is rich, varied and stuffed full of incident. In this, the first major history of its kind, Andrew Pettegree and Arthur der Weduwen explore the contested and dramatic history of the library, from the famous collections of the ancient world to the embattled public resources we cherish today. Along the way, they introduce us to the antiquarians and philanthropists who shaped the world's great collections, trace the rise and fall of fashions and tastes, and reveal the high crimes and misdemeanours committed in pursuit of rare and valuable manuscripts.

This book is a concise history of German stoneware, illustrated with 200 vivid photos, spanning from c.1300 to 1700 AD. German stoneware, high fired, nearly waterproof before light salt glazing, and extremely durable, has been described as "the most important and specific contribution that Germany made to the medieval European ceramic arts." This book interprets archeological remains in a bid to explore the spread of German stoneware to Britain, Continental Europe, and Colonial America. German stoneware has a story to tell. In 1300, the potters of Siegburg succeeded in fusing clay at an extreme high temperature to produce Rheinische Steinzeug, the stoneware of the Rhine, a virtually waterproof material. Rheinische Steinzeug became very popular and is considered to be one of the most important medieval ceramics. From the kitchens of medieval Europe to those of Colonial America, this fascinating story of German stoneware's dissemination and use is perfect for collectors, dealers, historians, archaeologists, museums, and anyone with a passion for the ceramic arts.
"Moonwatch Only is certainly one of the best books ever written about a single watch model." - William Massena - Timezone.com "It is an indescribable reference work and a true must-have for every Speedmaster collector." - Forbes "This book sets a new standard. Not only for books on the Omega Speedmaster, but for watch books in general. I've never seen anything like it, and believe me when I tell you that I could fill an impressive sized wall with books on watches. Authors of other books or publishers should take a look at Moonwatch Only as well to see how it should be done." - Robert Jan Broer - FratelloWatches "The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional - the Moonwatch - has done things that no other timepiece has done and it's been worn in places that only a few human beings have been." - Captain Eugene Cernan, 'Last man on the moon' There are very few timepieces in the world that deserve a definitive and comprehensive book such as this one. The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is one of them. Initially designed for automobile racing teams and engineers, the Omega Speedmaster embarked on a very different trajectory when NASA chose it to accompany astronauts heading for the Moon in 1965. Its involvement in the space adventure has propelled the Moonwatch to the top of the list of celebrated timepieces. After years of research and observation, the authors present a complete panorama of the Moonwatch in a systematic work that is both technical and attractive, making it the inescapable reference book for this legendary watch. This third edition has been enriched with numerous new features including a 16-page gallery of astronauts and their Speedmaster, QR codes to extend your exploration and a detailed story of a vintage Speedmaster.
This work, published on the 94th birthday of Diana Scarisbrick, honours her extraordinary career as the 'world's leading jewellery historian'. Twenty scholars, most of whom have known and benefited from Scarisbrick's vast knowledge over many decades, have contributed essays to this book. Liber Amicorum centres around the historian to which it is dedicated, Diana Scarisbrick. The work of the twenty contributors owes much to her own pioneering research in the feeled of jewellery history. The book opens with a brief biographical summary of Scarisbrick's life before exploring her assiduous work in the field of jewellery history. A subsequent bibliography of Scarisbrick's career work is provided which includes articles, interviews, and books published from 1970 to the present day, and serves as evidence of her eminence. The work as a whole functions as a 'small token of appreciation for all that she has contributed to the world of jewellery history'. The essays in this publication cover topics that range from Roman jewellery to the contemporary production of jewellery. Not constrained by a focus on one particular time period, these essays are indicative of the breadth of influence that Diana Scarisbrick's career has had. Contributions cover several different themes: amongst the objects discussed are gems, rings, chalices, bindings and crown jewels. The themes covered include jewel theft, methods of jewellery production, and the collections of individuals. Throughout each essay the insightful historical research of the contributors is beautifully supported by high quality illustrations. These bring the book to life, highlighting the splendour and fragility of some of the objects that are dicussed.

In the third part, place settings are covered in many different patterns, showing the wide variety of pieces that were used, from the common knives, forks, and spoons to more obscure forms like individual bird knives, bird forks, and cherry forks. Throughout the text value ranges are given, making it easy to look up individual prices. Using this book can be both inspirational and educational. It is both a must for collectors wishing to identify pieces of old family silver and an essential aid to the modern host or hostess.
Despite a long history of involvement in the design and production of firearms, the Birmingham firm of Webley & Scott is probably better known to the general public for its manufacture of airguns than for any other product. Until now, there has been no published reference that concentrates exclusively on the history and development of Webley air pistols. This book has been prepared to offer a comprehensive guide for all those interested in the subject and who appreciate the traditional British craftsmanship entailed. It embraces all models based upon the same initial patent, which were produced between the years 1924 and 1999, commencing with the original Mark 1 and progressing through twelve other models to the final Webley Tempest introduced more than half a century later. In addition to the pistols themselves, there are sections of the book relating to pellet styles and various shooting accessories produced by the same company. The whole work is divided into 22 sections, the text being accompanied throughout with 226 original photographs and over 70 line illustrations, each of which has been prepared by the author.
The invention of the telegraph, telephone, and broadcast signals gave kids in mid-20th-century America a new way to play. Speak into a device, push a button, turn a knob, and you were instantly communicating with friends around the block or across the planet. In most cases, it was imaginary, but adults were actually doing it-and with the right "equipment," you were too! The 150 color images in Do You Read Me? Vintage Communication Toys captures the excitement of these new technologies. The art deco and futuristic designs from the '30s through the '70s convey the wonder and optimism of the ever-evolving communication world. String and wire may have carried the signal, but it was the power of imagination that really carried the message. Toy collectors, nostalgia buffs, and retro-future fans will appreciate the price guide and build-it-yourself communicator included with this beautifully photographed and designed volume.

For several years now, sigillography as an independent subject in the field of Byzantine studies, has received increasing attention from both Byzantine studies and related disciplines, because it is the only area still able to provide plenty of yet undiscovered material for research and study. The articles deal with all aspects of Byzantine sigillography: presentation of new finds, discussion of new methods, questions of the political and ecclesiastical administration of Byzantinum, prosopography, historical geography, and art historical and iconographical problems. In addition, the volumes contain a loosely arranged list of Byzantine seals, which have been published in essays and auction catalogues, thus enabling those from more obscure publications to be located and identified. Volume 9, currently in preparation, mainly contains lectures from the 8th International Symposium on Byzantine Sigillography held in October 2003, in Berlin. Besides the iconography of seals, much emphasis was placed on questions of Byzantine administration. Further, selected collections are presented, as well as a large number of new finds and new acquisitions.
