Gemmology is the science of natural and artificial gems and
gemstones, considered to be a geoscience and a branch of
mineralogy. Although a profession in its own right, gemmology is
often studied by jewellers to augment their abilities of gem
identification. This comprehensive guide concentrates on the
history of Jade in China, and includes the chapters: The Chou
Dynasty; The Classic Age of Jade Carving from Han to Sung; From
Sung to Ming; From Ming Onwards; The Material Aspect of Jade; Jade
Objects of the Chou Dynasty Tabulated from Laufer; Note on the
Lo-Yang Tombs; and Common Symbols. This rare text constitutes a
definitive guide on the subject and will greatly appeal to
gemmologists and collectors of rare gemmological texts. This book
has been elected for republication due to its immense educational
value, and is proudly republished here with a new introduction on
the topic."

The names of plants that are so familiar to us magnolia,
bougainvillea, sequioa may just be names, but behind the names lie
stories of espionage and heroism, rivalry and mystery and
inspiration. In the Name of Plants relates the stories of these
people and the plants that were named after them. Each chapter
tells the story of the person for which each plant is named, many
of whom were pioneering explorers, collectors and botanists - such
as Alice Eastwood who has the yellow aster, Eastwoodia elegans,
named after her. Eastwood explored previously uncharted territories
in the 19th century and famously saved the California Academy of
Science's priceless plant collection from the 1906 San Francisco
earthquake. Subjects range from Charles Darwin (Darwinia) and
legendary French botanist Pierre Magnol (Magnolia), to US founding
fathers George Washington (Washingtonia) and Benjamin Franklin
(Franklinia). Each entry is accompanied by superb artworks from the
Library of the Natural History Museum, as well as photography of
specimens and wild plants and the essential taxonomic details and
geographic spread for each species.

For several years now, sigillography as an independent subject in
the field of Byzantine studies, has received increasing attention
from both Byzantine studies and related disciplines, because it is
the only area still able to provide plenty of yet undiscovered
material for research and study. The articles deal with all aspects
of Byzantine sigillography: presentation of new finds, discussion
of new methods, questions of the political and ecclesiastical
administration of Byzantinum, prosopography, historical geography,
and art historical and iconographical problems. In addition, the
volumes contain a loosely arranged list of Byzantine seals, which
have been published in essays and auction catalogues, thus enabling
those from more obscure publications to be located and identified.
Volume 9, currently in preparation, mainly contains lectures from
the 8th International Symposium on Byzantine Sigillography held in
October 2003, in Berlin. Besides the iconography of seals, much
emphasis was placed on questions of Byzantine administration.
Further, selected collections are presented, as well as a large
number of new finds and new acquisitions.

The Derveni papyrus is the oldest literary papyrus ever found, and
one of the very few from Greece itself, which makes it one of the
most interesting new texts from the ancient Greek world to have
been discovered this century. The eschatological doctrines and an
allegorical commentary on an Orphic theogony in terms of
Presocratic physics which it contains make it a uniquely important
document for the history of ancient Greek religion, philosophy, and
literary criticism. This book is the first to have been published
on the text. It includes a full and reliable translation of the
Papyrus together with a range of articles by leading European and
American classicists who are internationally recognised experts in
Greek religion and philosophy. Professor K. Tsantsanoglou, who will
publish the papyrus when work on it is complete, presents important
new material and has checked all the articles against the Papyrus.
Thus for the first time, material is provided which will authorize
scholarship upon the Papyrus in a way hitherto impossible, will
stimulate further work on it, and will make the book a standard
reference work on the subject for years to come.
First published in 1814, Werner's Nomenclature of Colours is a
taxonomic guide to colour which been cherished by naturalists and
anthropologists for over two centuries. In the late 1790's Abraham
Gottlob Werner devised his own standardised colour scheme, which
allowed the writer to describe even the subtlest of chromatic
differences with consistent terminology. His scheme was then
adapted by an Edinburgh flower painter, Patrick Syme, who traced
the actual minerals described by Werner, and used them to create
the colour charts found in the book. In the pre-photographic age,
almost all visual details had to be captured using the written
word, and scientific observers could not afford any ambiguity in
their descriptions. These included Charles Darwin, for whom
Werner's Nomenclature was an indispensable tool during his seminal
voyage on the Beagle. Werner's Nomenclature of Colours is a
charming artefact from the age of explorers, which continues to be
treasured by artists and scientists alike.
