Building Services Design Management (Paperback): J Portman Building Services Design Management (Paperback)
J Portman
R1,625 Discovery Miles 16 250 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Building services refers to the equipment and systems that contribute to controlling the internal environment to make it safe and comfortable to occupy. They also support the requirements of processes and business functions within buildings, for example manufacturing and assembly operations, medical procedures, warehousing and storage of materials, chemical processing, housing livestock, plant cultivation, etc. For both people and processes the ability of the building services engineering systems to continually perform properly, reliably, effectively and efficiently is of vital importance to the operational requirements of a building. Typically the building services installation is worth 30-60% of the total value of a contract, however existing publications on design management bundles building services engineering up with other disciplines and does not recognise its unique features and idiosyncrasies. Building Services Design Management provides authoritative guidance for building services engineers responsible for the design of services, overseeing the installation, and witnessing the testing and commissioning of these systems. The design stage requires technical skills to ensure that the systems are safe, compliant with legislative requirements and good practices, are cost-effective and are coordinated with the needs of the other design and construction team professionals. Covering everything from occupant subjectivity and end-user behaviour to design life maintainability, sequencing and design responsibility the book will meet the needs of building services engineering undergraduates and postgraduates as well as being an ideal handbook for building services engineers moving into design management.

James Holmes-Seidle
R2,603 Discovery Miles 26 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book for architects, interior designers, building managers, students, conference organisers looks at first principles to provide the user with the 'tools' to make their own decisions rather than a 'cookbook' approach. It is intended that designs and product information can be taken straight from the manual and inserted into ongoing projects.

For the first time the book considers the needs of people with visual, hearing and mental disabilities, who make up the majority of disabled people in the population, alongside those of people with physical mobility disabilities. Practical low cost solutions to retro-fitting existing buildings are discussed, as well as the methods used to assess the suitability of an existing building, and assembling a project to improve access for disabled people. Specific products and designs are illustrated and discussed - with full working technical drawings, and full specification details. These will reduce considerably the research time needed to produce a cost-effective solution that will improve access for disabled people. A perspective of the standards and legislation dealing with access issues in the UK is compared with those in other countries, and the standards mentioned are compared with the realities of practical implementation carried out in 4 years of design in this area.

Photovoltaics in Buildings - A Design Handbook for Architects and Engineers (Hardcover): Thomas Erge Photovoltaics in Buildings - A Design Handbook for Architects and Engineers (Hardcover)
Thomas Erge; Friedrich Sick
R4,516 Discovery Miles 45 160 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The integration of photovoltaics (PV) into buildings goes beyond energy saving by providing a clean and elegant way of actually generating electricity. There are already numerous successful examples and rapid technological improvements promise expansion of PV's present niche market to that of a major energy provider of the 21st century. This handbook is the outcome of a five year programme which took place under the auspices of the International Energy Agency. Architects and solar experts from 13 countries addressed the wide range of engineering and architectural issues involved in the successful integration of PV into buildings. It demonstrates how to maximise the overall solar contribution to the building; integrate PV effectively with the building structure; clarify the relationship of PV with other elements of the building's energy system; optimise the system economics. It forms a thorough design guide that covers all aspects if the subject and will enable all building designers, engineers and property owners to make the integration of PV into buildings an architecturally appealing and energetically effective option.

Design for Fragility - 13 Stories of Humanitarian Architects (Paperback): Esther Charlesworth, John Fien Design for Fragility - 13 Stories of Humanitarian Architects (Paperback)
Esther Charlesworth, John Fien
R1,103 Discovery Miles 11 030 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The demand is now urgent for architects to respond to the design and planning challenges of rebuilding cities and landscapes being destroyed by civil conflict, (un)natural disasters, political instability, and poverty. The number of people fleeing their homes and being displaced by such conflict now totals almost 100 million. Despite the massive human and physical costs of these crises, the number of architects, planners, and landscape architects equipped to work with disaster and development professionals in rebuilding in the aftermath of conflict, floods, fires, earthquakes, typhoons, and tsunamis remains chronically low. Design for Fragility expands the nascent, but rapidly growing field of humanitarian architecture by exploring 13 design responses to such conflict and displacement across 11 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Fiji, India, Iran, Pakistan, and the USA. Linked to this displacement is the systemic poverty that often lingers from previous colonial territories and eras, in which many of the featured projects in the book are located. This book follows Charlesworth's Humanitarian Architecture: 15 Stories of Architects Working After Disasters (Routledge 2014), which analysed the role for architects in exercising 'spatial agency' while designing shelter and settlement projects for communities after conflict and disaster. Since that time, the humanitarian architecture movement has expanded globally with the prominence of design agencies including the MASS Design Group and Architecture Sans Frontieres (ASF) International. Design for Fragility analyses this role of spatial agency in architecture by addressing diverse conditions of fragility across 13 built projects - from refugee housing in Uganda and an orphanage for teenage girls in Iran to a residential centre in Northern Australia for people with acquired brain injury. Each of the projects profiled in this book explore: The experiences and perceptions of fragility - or precarity - that provided a design challenge and directed the particular spatial response. The specific typology of the project, whether that be a housing, health, children's, or a First Nations project. The personal values that influenced the architects to work on humanitarian/community projects and how consultation occurred with diverse and often contested project stakeholders. The experiences of the design team as well as project managers, occupants, and donors of the built project, exploring what they deemed successful about the project, and what, if any, were its limitations. Beautifully designed with over 150 illustrations, this practical and inspiring book is for architects, landscape architects, design educators, humanitarian and development aid agencies that are involved, or seeking to be part, of future disaster mitigation and reconstruction strategies and projects, globally.

Access to the Historic Environment: Meeting the Needs of Disabled People (Hardcover): Lisa Foster, Patrick Nuttgens Access to the Historic Environment: Meeting the Needs of Disabled People (Hardcover)
Lisa Foster, Patrick Nuttgens
R4,483 Discovery Miles 44 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Access for disabled people in historic settings is more than just a temporary ramp over the front steps for a wheelchair user. It is a commitment to create integrated use and enjoyment of historic monuments for everyone, including people with mobility or sensory impairments, older people, parents with small children, or those temporarily disabled as a result of illness or injury. This book examines flexible and pragmatic solutions to improve circulation in buildings by overcoming level changes, addition of handrails and other facilities which achieve the basic goal of dignified access, and which protect a building's special architectural character. It features practical guidelines and illustrated case study material, with examples of how to improve access in different types of historic buildings including Georgian, and neo-classical buildings, historic monuments, country houses, gardens and landscapes.

Hugh Clamp, H. Clamp
R5,677 Discovery Miles 56 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This manual is intended for all who are involved in the landscape industry: landscape architects, local and county authority parks directors and managers, landscape contractors, and the nurserymen who supply them. Most will know their own duties and responsibilities but few will know in equal detail the duties and responsibilities of those with whom they come in daily contact. By explaining the best practice and procedures of all the parties concerned in the satisfactory completion of landscape contracts - large and small, in public and in private sectors - each will be enabled to play his or her own part as effectively as possible. This manual is particularly intended to ensure that plants which are tended so carefully over several years in the nursery are handled with equal care in transit to their new location, and are then planted and looked after in such a way that they thrive and grow unhindered in the years to come. It constitutes an invaluable aid to students, practitioners and contractors, being written in a readable, unstuffy style, while achieving the author's stated aim of highlighting the main elements of landscape contractual procedures. This book should be of interes

The Environmental Imagination - Technics and Poetics of the Architectural Environment (Paperback, 2nd edition): Dean Hawkes The Environmental Imagination - Technics and Poetics of the Architectural Environment (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Dean Hawkes
R1,385 Discovery Miles 13 850 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The Environmental Imagination explores the relationship between tectonics and poetics in environmental design in architecture. Working thematically and chronologically from the eighteenth century to the present day, this book redefines the historiography of environmental design by looking beyond conventional histories to argue that the environments within buildings are a collaboration between poetic intentions and technical means. In a sequence of essays, the book traces a line through works by leading architects of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that illustrate the impact of new technologies on the conception and realisation of environments in buildings. In this, a consideration of the qualitative dimension of environment is added to the primarily technological narratives of other accounts. In this second edition, the book has been substantially rewritten and restructured to include further research conducted in the decade since the first edition. A number of important buildings have been revisited, in order to extend the descriptions of their environments, and studies have been made of a number of newly studied, significant buildings. A completely new essay offers an environmental interpretation of Luis Barragan's magical own house in Mexico City and the earlier studies of buildings by Peter Zumthor have been gathered into a single, extended essay that includes a body of new research. On the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Reyner Banham's, The Architecture of the Well-tempered Environment, the book concludes with a critical tribute to that seminal text. The Environmental Imagination will appeal to academics and practitioners with interests in the history, theory and technology of architecture.

Aquaculture Landscapes - Fish Farms and the Public Realm (Hardcover): Michael Ezban Aquaculture Landscapes - Fish Farms and the Public Realm (Hardcover)
Michael Ezban
R4,400 Discovery Miles 44 000 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Aquaculture Landscapes explores the landscape architecture of farms, reefs, parks, and cities that are designed to entwine the lives of fish and humans. In the twenty-first century, aquaculture's contribution to the supply of fish for human consumption exceeds that of wild-caught fish for the first time in history. Aquaculture has emerged as the fastest growing food production sector in the world, but aquaculture has agency beyond simply converting fish to food. Aquaculture Landscapes recovers aquaculture as a practice with a deep history of constructing extraordinary landscapes. These landscapes are characterized and enriched by multispecies interdependency, performative ecologies, collaborative practices, and aesthetic experiences between humans and fish. Aquaculture Landscapes presents over thirty contemporary and historical landscapes, spanning six continents, with incisive diagrams and vivid photographs. Within this expansive scope is a focus on urban aquaculture projects by leading designers-including Turenscape, James Corner Field Operations, and SCAPE-that employ mutually beneficial strategies for fish and humans to address urban coastal resiliency, wastewater management, and other contemporary urban challenges. Michael Ezban delivers a compelling account of the coalitions of fish and humans that shape the form, function, and identity of cities, and he offers a forward-thinking theorization of landscape as the preeminent medium for the design of ichthyological urbanism in the Anthropocene. With over two hundred evocative images, including ninety original drawings by the author, Aquaculture Landscapes is a richly illustrated portrayal of aquaculture seen through the disciplinary lens of landscape architecture. As the first book devoted to this topic, Aquaculture Landscapes is an original and essential resource for landscape architects, urbanists, animal geographers, aquaculturists, and all who seek and value multispecies cohabitation of a shared public realm. Winner of the 2020 John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book Prize!

Early Domestic Architecture of Pennsylvania (Paperback): Eleanor Raymond Early Domestic Architecture of Pennsylvania (Paperback)
Eleanor Raymond
R862 R709 Discovery Miles 7 090 Save R153 (18%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A ground-breaking work when first published in 1931, this classic book is now released in soft cover. A visionary, Eleanor Raymond, A.I.A. explored what she called the, unstudied directness in fitting form to function. The book was one of the first systematic inventories of vernacular American architecture and defined Raymond's long and successful career. Beautiful photography guides the eye through examples of authentic colonial architecture in Pennsylvania. Heavy beams, primitive stonework, and detailed paneling are shown, along with doorways, windows, staircases, and rooflines. The author selected works that show traces of the mediaeval spirit as well as early Georgian character found in the oldest settlements in Pennsylvania. Raymond's work records interior and exterior views not only of the smaller houses, but also of barns, mills, spring houses and other outbuildings. It has been praised for being the first to consider the beauty and architectural value of smaller and more primitive structures typical of Eastern Pennsylvania, and integral to the area's appeal. As a bonus for those hoping to restore such treasures, Raymond included 25 pages of measured drawings detailing cabinetry work and molding profiles.
